Whirlpool Washer UL Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Whirlpool Washer display showing UL — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Unbalanced load — the washer cannot balance the load for spin.

UL is Whirlpool's top-load unbalance code: sensing/spin checks found the load distributed too unevenly to spin safely. The control retries redistribution; UL is the give-up state. Single heavy items, tiny loads, an unlevel machine and (with age) worn suspension rods are the causes — the same quartet as every brand's balance code. The Cabrio documentation draws a distinction that turns UL from an alarm into an instrument reading, and it lives in whether the display is steady or flashing. The Cabrio tech data puts it this way: uL is displayed when the machine/motor control detects an off-balance load, and it is steady on while the washer runs a mini-cycle to rebalance the load. The display clears if the mini-cycle successfully rebalanced the load; if the mini-cycle is unsuccessful, uL flashes until the lid is opened, letting the owner view and redistribute the load. Steady means 'working on it'; flashing means 'finished trying — your turn'. Whirlpool's product help article for uL fills in the owner's half of the choreography: allow the washer to continue while it runs the load-balance correction routine; if the dial is flashing and the washer has stopped, redistribute the load, close the lid and press START/PAUSE. It also warns about inputs owners rarely connect to balance at all: adding wet items to the washer, or adding more water to the basket, can unbalance a load that was previously fine. The Cabrio Use & Care manual (the W10240440C code list) prints the same routine description for the Cabrio line, Platinum trims included — the Platinum consoles dress the same platform in different trim, and their UL is this UL, with the same steady/flashing grammar.

Applies to: Whirlpool top-load washers.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the UL code on a Whirlpool washer?

Single dense item

Bath mats and blankets are the classics.

Tiny load

Too little to distribute.

Machine unlevel

A rocking foot multiplies imbalance.

Worn suspension rods

The top-load wear item behind age-related UL.

Mid-cycle additions that rewrite the load

Product help names it directly: adding wet items, or adding more water to the basket, can unbalance the washer. A garment tossed in mid-wash lands wherever it lands, fully soaked and at full weight, against a load the machine had already distributed — the correction routine then inherits a problem created after its first success.

The single dense item with no partners

Whirlpool's guidance singles out the pattern: avoid washing single items, and balance a lone item such as a rug or a jeans jacket with a few extra items such as towels. A single heavy piece gives the mini-cycle nothing to redistribute against — there is no second mass to move opposite it.

Oversized nonabsorbent pieces in the wrong cycle

Comforters and poly-filled jackets hold their shape and their air, refusing to spread around the basket wall. Whirlpool steers them to the Bulky/Sheets Deep Water Wash cycle; run in an ordinary cycle they present the routine with a load that is geometrically incapable of balancing.

Suspension wear presenting as a loading problem

On an ageing Cabrio, the rods that centre the basket lose their damping gradually, so mini-cycles that used to succeed begin failing on the same loads. The tell is historical: UL used to be rare and self-clearing, and is now frequent and flashing, on laundry that has not changed.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Redistribute by hand; add towels to single items.
  2. Corner rock-test; level the feet.
  3. Bounce test: press the tub down, release — one rebound healthy, many = worn rods.
  4. Classify the display before acting: steady uL means the mini-cycle is running — stand back and let it finish. Flashing uL with a stopped machine means the mini-cycle failed and the manual's redistribute step is now yours. Acting during the steady phase restarts the problem; ignoring the flashing phase strands the load.
  5. Audit the cycle's history, not just its contents: was anything added after the start — a wet item, extra water? A yes reclassifies the episode from machine behaviour to input behaviour, and the fix is a habit, not a part.
  6. Check the cycle selection against the load: oversized nonabsorbent items belong in Bulky/Sheets Deep Water Wash per Whirlpool's guidance. A UL earned by a comforter in a Normal cycle is a settings finding.
  7. Establish the trend line: is this the first flashing UL in the machine's life, or the latest in a rising series on ordinary loads? One episode is weather; a rising series across months is suspension, and the empty bounce test (press the basket down, release, count the rebounds) confirms which.

How to fix the UL error code

  1. Rebalance loads; avoid single-item washes.
  2. Level the machine.
  3. Replace suspension rods (set of 4) when the bounce test fails.
  4. For the flashing case, Whirlpool's printed sequence: redistribute the load, close the lid, press START/PAUSE — and redistribute properly, spreading items in loose heaps evenly around the washplate rather than compressing the heavy side down.
  5. Rebuild single-item washes: never send a rug or jacket alone; add towels as ballast partners, per product help, so the mini-cycle has mass to work with on both sides of the basket.
  6. Move oversized nonabsorbent loads to the Bulky/Sheets Deep Water Wash cycle the manual assigns them, where deeper water floats pieces into spreadable positions instead of leaving them folded where they fell.
  7. Stop mid-cycle additions, or accept their cost knowingly: anything added wet after distribution is a new balance problem the machine must solve from a standing start.
  8. When the trend and the bounce test agree, replace the suspension rods as a set of four; afterwards the same loads that flashed should clear in the steady phase, which is the repair's proof.

The part that usually fails: Suspension rods (set)

The bounce test is the field diagnosis.

How to reset / clear the UL code

Clears when a spin completes in balance.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the UL code keep coming back?

UL growing frequent on normal loads = rods. Banging even empty = stop, technician (possible basket/drive damage). UL that keeps returning after honest redistribution has only a few stories left, and they separate cleanly. If it returns on one load type only, the load is the author — cycle choice or composition. If it returns across load types with a worsening bounce test, the suspension is the author and parts end it. If it returns even on an empty spin, leave the balance framework entirely: a basket that cannot run true empty has a mechanical problem — drive, basket or bearing territory — and continued spinning is how small damage becomes large. Note, too, the one return that is not a return at all: a steady uL that clears itself mid-routine is the system succeeding, and counting those as failures manufactures a fault history the machine does not have.

Can you still use the washer with UL showing? Finish at lower spin speeds while fixing the cause.

How to stop UL coming back

When to call a pro. Cabinet-striking tub or visible off-centre tub.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Whirlpool washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Whirlpool washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
5DSuds detected — 5D is how some Whirlpool displays render the Sd suds code (7-segment 5/S confusion).Let the suds routine finish.
A09Compact front-load: no water detected entering; level switch trip not seen in time.Open the supply valves and clean inlet screens; test the pressure switch.
A10Compact front-load: long drain; drain time exceeds four minutes.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
DLDoor lock error — the door latch/lock failed to lock (front-load, older Duet rendering; the F5E2 of its generation).Replace the door latch/lock assembly if closure is sound.
DRFront-load: door not opened between consecutive cycles, code F5E4 shown as DR.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DUCabrio top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid and wait for the basket to stop before retrying.
E01Part of a split F-code display — E01 is the second half of codes like F8E1/F9E1; read it together with the F-code shown alternately (on this platform the common pairing for drain topics is F9 E1 = drain pump system error).Diagnose the completed code using its own guide (drain, fill, or motor family).
E1The E-half of an alternating Whirlpool F-code (see E01) — or, on Whirlpool's stacked laundry centers, a standalone E1 'water inlet alarm' (the correct water level has not been reached within 20 minutes). A standalone E1 is never a washer SENSOR code in Whirlpool's documentation: sensor faults are full F-pairs (F3E1 level system, F3E2 inlet temperature). Identify the full code from the display before diagnosing. [Sensor footnote corrected 2026-10-28, verification pass: Whirlpool/Maytag tech sheets + product help.]Diagnose the completed code with its family guide (drain/fill/motor/sensor).
F0E1Front-load: load detected while running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove all items from the drum and restart the Clean Washer cycle empty.
F0E2Oversuds detected; washer pauses to reduce foam before continuing.Run a rinse and spin cycle; use only HE detergent in the correct amount.
F0E3Top-load: overload detected; load exceeds capacity or basket cannot turn.Remove excess laundry, check for wedged items, and restart the cycle.
F0E5Off-balance load detected, also shown as OB on some models.Redistribute items evenly; check suspension if the basket bounces more than once.
F0E7Top-load: load detected when running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove any load from the basket before running the Clean Washer cycle.
F1Control board error — the main electronic control has detected an internal fault (EEPROM/control failure family). If the reset clears it and it stays away for weeks, log it and carry on.

Codes UL gets confused with

E1 — The E-half of an alternating Whirlpool F-code (see E01) — or, on Whirlpool's stacked laundry centers, a standalone E1 'water inlet alarm' (the correct water level has not been reached within 20 minutes). A standalone E1 is never a washer SENSOR code in Whirlpool's documentation: sensor faults are full F-pairs (F3E1 level system, F3E2 inlet temperature). Identify the full code from the display before diagnosing. [Sensor footnote corrected 2026-10-28, verification pass: Whirlpool/Maytag tech sheets + product help.] Like E01, a lone 'E1' is usually an incomplete read on Whirlpool's alternating displays: the fault is the F-code it pairs with (F9E1 drain, F8E1 fill, F7E1 motor are the E1 pairings).

OL — Overload — the load size exceeds the washer's capacity (displayed oL on Cabrio/Bravos/Oasis top-loaders, stored as F70 on that platform and as F0E3 on newer F/E platforms). OL (oL) means the control judged the load too heavy to proceed.

5D — Suds detected — 5D is how some Whirlpool displays render the Sd suds code (7-segment 5/S confusion). On Whirlpool's segmented displays, the suds code Sd is widely read — and on some panels effectively shown — as 5D.

RL — rL (remove load) — items were detected in the drum during the Clean Washer with affresh cycle. The manuals print it lowercase 'rL' and gloss it in brackets as (remove load); on some models the same condition is written F34. rL is documented in Whirlpool and Maytag front-load owner manuals, in two places: the troubleshooting table ('"rL" (remove load) appears in display — load detected in drum during Clean Washer with affresh cycle') and the Clean Washer cycle description itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is UL the same as UE on other brands?

Yes — every brand has a balance code; Whirlpool's top-load rendering is UL.

What does UL mean on a Whirlpool Cabrio Platinum washer?

Unbalanced load, in the Cabrio platform's spelling: the control detected an off-balance load. The Platinum trim uses the same Cabrio documentation — uL shows steady while the washer runs its mini-cycle to rebalance the load, clears if the mini-cycle succeeds, and flashes if it fails, until the lid is opened and the load redistributed.

Why does my Whirlpool Cabrio keep showing UL after I redistribute the load?

Work the short list in order: the redistribution may be compressing rather than spreading (rebuild in loose heaps around the washplate); the load may contain a single heavy item with nothing to balance it (add towels); the cycle may be wrong for the piece (Bulky/Sheets Deep Water Wash for oversized nonabsorbent items); or, if this has been building for months on ordinary loads, the suspension rods are wearing and the empty bounce test will show it.

Is UL on a Whirlpool washer a breakdown or a routine?

It is a routine with a failure exit. Steady uL is the washer actively rebalancing — Whirlpool's product help says to allow it to continue. Only flashing uL on a stopped machine is the routine reporting defeat and asking for redistribution. Most UL episodes are the first kind and end with the display clearing itself; the code becomes a repair question only when flashing episodes repeat on well-built loads.
