Whirlpool, Maytag & Kenmore Washer SD Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Whirlpool Washer display showing SD — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Suds detected — oversudsing condition (also rendered SUD / 5D on Whirlpool displays).

SD is Whirlpool's suds code: the control sensed excess foam (via level/motor-load behaviour) and extended the cycle to clear it — extra rinsing/draining time, sometimes a pause. Causes are detergent dose, non-HE product, soft water, and accumulated tub residue. The machine is protecting itself, not failing. Sd deserves its own reading because, unlike a drain fault, nothing in the machine has broken and no water is stuck by a blockage. The control has detected more foam than the washer can rinse or spin against, and foam changes the physics of the cycle: it cushions the load, holds water in suspension, and prevents a clean spin-out, so loads emerge soaking and poorly rinsed if the machine simply pressed on. Whirlpool's answer is therefore time rather than force — extended rinsing, deliberate pauses while tumbling stops, and extra water added in stages until the bubbles collapse. Understanding Sd as a foam-management state, with detergent concentration, water softness, bleach type, and stored residue as its four levers, keeps it entirely separate from the pump-and-hose diagnosis that a long-drain code demands.

Applies to: Whirlpool HE washers (top and front load).
Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the SD code on a Whirlpool washer?

Overdosing

The leading cause, especially 'extra for dirty loads'.

Non-HE detergent

High-foam formula in a low-water machine.

Residue build-up

The tub re-foams stored detergent.

Very soft water

Amplifies foaming at any dose.

Concentrated detergent dosed as if it were standard detergent

Whirlpool stresses that HE detergents come in very different concentration levels, such as 2x, 4x, and 8x, and that dosage must follow the detergent maker's amount for soil level and load size. An 8x product poured to the same line that was right for a 2x product delivers several times the intended surfactant into very little water, and the washer foams accordingly. The same trap applies to oversized pre-measured pacs, which Whirlpool says should only be used for large or heavily soiled loads, not everyday ones.

No-splash or easy-pour bleach adding its own thickener

A suds event is not always the detergent's fault. Whirlpool notes that no-splash and easy-pour liquid chlorine bleaches contain a thickening agent that can create excess suds in the washer by itself. If Sd began after a load that used that type of bleach — even with a correct HE detergent dose — the bleach is the suspect, and Whirlpool's remedy is to run the washer with a regular liquid bleach product instead, or to clean the machine, rather than changing detergent again.

Detergent and soil residue coating the outer tub and hoses

Months of slightly-too-large doses do not all rinse away. Residue builds on the outer tub, in the sump, and in recirculation and drain hoses, and hot water on a later load re-dissolves and re-foams it, so Sd can appear on a load where the dose in the drawer was modest and correct. This is the build-up branch: the foam is coming from the machine's stored detergent, not today's, which is why a single reduced-dose load does not cure it and repeated cleaning cycles are needed.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Visible foam confirms it. Check product type and dose honestly.
  2. Read the detergent bottle before the next load, not after: confirm it is HE, note its concentration level (2x, 4x, 8x), and compare the amount actually used against the maker's dose for that concentration, load size, and soil level — then check whether a large pre-measured pac was used on a small or lightly soiled load.
  3. Reconstruct the exact load that faulted: was a no-splash or easy-pour bleach used, was fabric softener or a detergent booster added, and is your water softened or naturally very soft? Whirlpool notes very soft water needs less detergent, so a household that has just fitted a softener often meets Sd within the first few washes at unchanged doses.
  4. Watch one full suds routine without interrupting it and note what the machine does: Whirlpool describes the routine as automatically extending rinse time, pausing the tumbling, and adding water for additional rinsing so the bubbles break — and it may repeat several times. A machine doing exactly that is managing suds as designed, not failing.
  5. Run one empty hot Clean Washer cycle with no detergent at all and observe the water through the door: visible foam in a detergent-free cleaning cycle proves residue build-up inside the machine, while clear water points back to the dose or product used in the faulting load.

How to fix sd error code maytag washer?

  1. Let the cycle finish its suds routine.
  2. Run Clean Washer (hot, empty, no detergent) — repeatedly if build-up is heavy.
  3. Dose down permanently; HE only.
  4. Let the current suds routine finish completely rather than cancelling the cycle: Whirlpool's routine — extended rinsing, paused tumbling, added water, repeated as needed — is the machine clearing the foam safely, and interrupting it leaves the load saturated in suds that the next cycle inherits.
  5. Strip build-up with repeated empty Clean Washer cycles and no detergent until a cleaning cycle runs foam-free; Whirlpool recommends the Clean Washer cycle monthly to control odour and build-up, and a machine with established residue usually needs the cycle run more than once in a row before ordinary loads stay clear of Sd.
  6. Re-dose permanently for your actual product and water: measure HE detergent by its own concentration directions instead of by habit or by the drawer line alone, reserve large pacs for large heavily soiled loads, use less again if your water is very soft, and switch any no-splash bleach for a regular liquid bleach product.

The part that usually fails: None

Condition, not component. Persistent SD with zero detergent + clean tub = level sensor suspicion only.

How to reset / clear the SD code

Self-clears when foam subsides.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Maytag washer keeps saying sd error code

Recurring SD = build-up or dose/water-softness mismatch. Sd that keeps returning after doses have genuinely been corrected is telling a slower story about the machine's interior. Detergent residue accumulates where you cannot see it — the outer tub wall, the sump, and the hoses — and each hot load re-foams a little of it, so the code can persist for several washes after the dosing mistake itself has ended. The reliable exit is patience with cleaning: repeated empty Clean Washer cycles with no detergent, run until a cleaning cycle completes with clear, foam-free water, and then a monthly cleaning cycle as Whirlpool recommends to stop the coating rebuilding. If Sd still appears in a machine that runs a detergent-free cleaning cycle completely clear, the story is no longer residue, and the level-sensing suspicion described on the main page is the next step.

Can you still use the washer with SD showing? Yes — finishing the cycle is the designed behaviour.

How to stop SD coming back

When to call a pro. Only the zero-detergent case.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Whirlpool washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Codes SD gets confused with

F9E1 — Drain pump system error — long drain / drain failure (Duet-platform rendering of the F21 fault). F9E1 is Whirlpool's drain fault on the Duet/VMW-era code system: the pump ran and the level didn't fall in time.

SUD — Suds detected — too much foam (Whirlpool's full-word rendering of the Sd condition). SUD appears on Whirlpool displays that spell the suds state out: the control detected oversudsing and is managing it (pausing, adding rinse/drain time).

F21 — Long drain — the washer is taking too long to drain (Whirlpool's drain fault; F9E1 is its sibling rendering on Duet platforms). F21 means the control ran the drain pump and the water level didn't fall fast enough.

E01 — Part of a split F-code display — E01 is the second half of codes like F8E1/F9E1; read it together with the F-code shown alternately (on this platform the common pairing for drain topics is F9 E1 = drain pump system error). Whirlpool Duet-era displays alternate between the F-half and the E-half of a fault code: the panel shows 'F9', then 'E1', and owners understandably search 'E01' alone.

Frequently asked questions

SD vs SUD — difference?

None: display renderings of the same suds detection across Whirlpool generations.

What is the washer actually doing while Sd is on the display?

It is running Whirlpool's suds-reduction routine. Whirlpool explains that the washer cannot spin the water out with excess suds present, so when Sud or Sd is displayed it automatically extends the rinse time to remove them: tumbling pauses, additional water is added for extra rinsing, and the pause lets the bubbles in the suds break down. That pause-and-rinse sequence is necessary and may occur several times before the foam is eliminated, which is why an Sd cycle can run far longer than the time first shown.

I only used a little detergent — why did I still get Sd?

Three common reasons survive an honest dose check. The product may be far more concentrated than the dose assumed, since HE detergents are sold at 2x, 4x, and 8x strengths with different correct amounts. Very soft water foams the same dose much harder, and Whirlpool advises using less detergent in that case. And residue from earlier overdosing can re-foam from the tub itself — the empty, detergent-free Clean Washer test separates that build-up case from a dosing case.

Can bleach cause Sd even with the right detergent?

Yes. Whirlpool specifically warns that no-splash and easy-pour liquid chlorine bleaches contain a thickening agent that may create excess suds in washers. If Sd tracks the loads where that bleach was used, Whirlpool's fix is to run the washer using a regular liquid bleach product instead, or to run the washer empty or a Clean Washer cycle to clear what is already inside — changing detergent brands will not help, because the detergent was not the source.

How to fix sd error code maytag washer?

Start here: Let the cycle finish its suds routine. Run Clean Washer (hot, empty, no detergent) — repeatedly if build-up is heavy.
