Whirlpool, Maytag & Kenmore Washer OL Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Whirlpool Washer display showing OL — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Overload — the load size exceeds the washer's capacity (displayed oL on Cabrio/Bravos/Oasis top-loaders, stored as F70 on that platform and as F0E3 on newer F/E platforms).

OL (oL) means the control judged the load too heavy to proceed. The manuals' sequence is specific: the washer has attempted to fill and begin the wash cycle, and if it is overloaded it will drain any water and detergent that was added during the fill before stopping. It's a load-management report — too many items, or too many water-hungry heavy items (towels, denim, bedding) in one load. But both manufacturer charts carry a second branch: oL/F70 and F0E3 also post when the basket cannot disengage or cannot be turned — mechanical friction on the drive mechanism, or an item wedged between the basket and the tub — which is why OL on a modest load is a mechanical story, not a loading one. The display and the stored code are two spellings of this fault on the Cabrio platform: the panel flashes oL, and the same event is stored as F70. The Cabrio fault chart's wording is worth keeping in full because it carries both branches: 'oL flashes when the machine/motor control detects a load size that exceeds the washer's capacity' — and the fuller chart text adds 'or if the basket cannot disengage', naming mechanical friction on the drive mechanism as the alternative. Newer Whirlpool and Maytag top-loaders fold the same pair of conditions into F0E3: 'Fault is displayed when the main control detects a load size that exceeds the washer's capacity OR basket cannot be turned.' A Kenmore Elite showing OL is the Oasis — Kenmore's 110 (Whirlpool-built) twin of the Cabrio — and its manual prints the oL entry word for word as Whirlpool's, drain behaviour included. So across all four badges in this article's title, OL is one platform's report with one loading branch and one friction branch, and telling them apart is the whole diagnosis.

Applies to: Whirlpool Cabrio, Maytag Bravos and Kenmore Oasis (110, Whirlpool-built) top-loaders (oL display, F70 stored), and newer Whirlpool/Maytag top-loaders that write the same overload fault as F0E3.
Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the OL code on a Whirlpool washer?

Genuinely oversized load

A load size that exceeds the basket's capacity — the manuals judge it by outcome (the washer fills, attempts to begin, drains and stops), not by a fill fraction.

Waterlogged single items

One huge absorbent item reads as overload.

Basket cannot disengage / mechanical friction

Friction on the drive mechanism, or an item between the basket and the tub, prevents the basket disengaging or turning — the charts' second condition for this code.

A basket that cannot disengage after the drain step

On the Cabrio drive, agitation and spin need the basket to engage and disengage from the drive. The chart's second condition — basket cannot disengage, with mechanical friction on the drive mechanism — produces an honest oL on a load that is not oversized at all: the control tries to move a basket that is still coupled when it should be floating free, reads the resistance as excess load, and posts the overload code. The timing is the tell: this branch tends to appear as the cycle tries to move from one phase to the next, and it repeats at the same point on loads of any size, where a genuine overload varies with what you put in.

One waterlogged item that outweighs a full normal load

The manuals judge overload by load size against capacity, and water rewrites the arithmetic. A bath mat, a heavy rug, a single soaked blanket or a pair of saturated jeans can weigh more wet than a full mixed load, while looking like 'just one item' in the basket. The machine is not misreading: at fill and first movement it is moving that full wet weight. This is the branch behind most 'OL with only three things in it' reports — count the wet weight, not the items — and the cure is the same as any overload: split it, or wash the heavy item alone on its own cycle rather than adding more laundry to 'balance' an already-heavy basket.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Remove several items and rerun: OL gone = loading confirmed. Note that the machine drained the detergent away with the water, so add detergent again on the restart (the manuals' own instruction).
  2. Note if OL appears on ordinary mixed loads repeatedly — that's the mechanical branch.
  3. With power off, turn the basket by hand: a basket that cannot be turned freely is the friction branch, not a loading problem.
  4. Use the restart itself as the test, exactly as the manuals write it: open the lid to clear the display, remove several items, add detergent (the machine drained the first dose away with the fill water), close the lid and press START/PAUSE. If the reduced load runs, the diagnosis was loading — no part is implicated, whatever the code felt like.
  5. Watch where in the cycle OL appears. At fill/first movement, on a big or heavy load, is the loading branch. At the same transition point every time, on ordinary loads, is the disengage/friction branch — and a third pattern, OL appearing only on one particular item, is the waterlogged-single-item branch.
  6. Separate OL from its neighbour uL before acting: uL is the unbalanced-load report that arrives near spin while the washer runs a correction routine; OL arrives early, after fill, and the washer drains and stops. Redistributing fixes uL; only removing weight (or removing friction) fixes OL.

How to fix the OL error code

  1. Wash smaller loads; split heavy items across loads. Close the lid and press START/PAUSE (top-load) to restart after removing items.
  2. If OL persists on modest loads, find the friction: check for items between the basket and the tub first, then drive-mechanism diagnosis (technician level if the basket won't turn).
  3. For the friction branch, start with what costs nothing: look and feel for anything wedged between the inner basket and the outer tub (the F0E3 chart's own example of mechanical friction) and confirm the basket turns freely by hand with the power off. A basket that will not turn, or that grinds, is a technician diagnosis — forcing restarts against a locked basket wears the drive the code is protecting.

The part that usually fails: None for loading cases

Mechanical OL = whatever is creating the friction (a wedged item, basket or drive parts) — the manuals name the condition, not a single part.

How to reset / clear the OL code

On the oL platform: open the lid to clear the display, remove excess laundry, then restart the cycle. F0E3 clears the same way — excess removed, cycle restarted.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the OL code keep coming back?

OL creeping into smaller and smaller loads over months = growing mechanical friction — get the drive inspected before it strands mid-cycle. OL that returns is telling you which branch you misread. Returning on the same bulky load is still loading — reduce further or split the heavy items; the code has no memory of fairness. Returning on progressively smaller, ordinary loads is the friction branch developing: basket disengagement getting worse, or an item working its way deeper between basket and tub. The pattern to act on early is OL plus any new mechanical sound — grinding, scraping, a basket that feels rough turning by hand — because that combination is the drive asking for inspection before the basket stops turning altogether and the overload report becomes a locked-rotor one.

Can you still use the washer with OL showing? Yes with corrected load sizes; don't keep forcing overloaded cycles — they wear the drive.

How to stop OL coming back

When to call a pro. OL on small loads with grinding/under-machine debris, or a basket that will not turn by hand = technician-level drive diagnosis.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Whirlpool washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Whirlpool washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
5DSuds detected — 5D is how some Whirlpool displays render the Sd suds code (7-segment 5/S confusion).Let the suds routine finish.
A09Compact front-load: no water detected entering; level switch trip not seen in time.Open the supply valves and clean inlet screens; test the pressure switch.
A10Compact front-load: long drain; drain time exceeds four minutes.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
DLDoor lock error — the door latch/lock failed to lock (front-load, older Duet rendering; the F5E2 of its generation).Replace the door latch/lock assembly if closure is sound.
DRFront-load: door not opened between consecutive cycles, code F5E4 shown as DR.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DUCabrio top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid and wait for the basket to stop before retrying.
E01Part of a split F-code display — E01 is the second half of codes like F8E1/F9E1; read it together with the F-code shown alternately (on this platform the common pairing for drain topics is F9 E1 = drain pump system error).Diagnose the completed code using its own guide (drain, fill, or motor family).
E1The E-half of an alternating Whirlpool F-code (see E01) — or, on some Whirlpool-built platforms, a thermistor/sensor rendering. Identify the full code from the display before diagnosing.Diagnose the completed code with its family guide (drain/fill/motor/sensor).
F0E1Front-load: load detected while running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove all items from the drum and restart the Clean Washer cycle empty.
F0E2Oversuds detected; washer pauses to reduce foam before continuing.Run a rinse and spin cycle; use only HE detergent in the correct amount.
F0E3Top-load: overload detected; load exceeds capacity or basket cannot turn.Remove excess laundry, check for wedged items, and restart the cycle.
F0E5Off-balance load detected, also shown as OB on some models.Redistribute items evenly; check suspension if the basket bounces more than once.
F0E7Top-load: load detected when running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove any load from the basket before running the Clean Washer cycle.
F1Control board error — the main electronic control has detected an internal fault (EEPROM/control failure family). If the reset clears it and it stays away for weeks, log it and carry on.

Codes OL gets confused with

PF — Power failure — power was interrupted during operation (a customer notification code, not a breakdown and not a stored service fault). PF tells you the control lost power during a cycle: an outage, a tripped breaker, a plug knocked loose — or, when no house event explains it, control voltage too low or lost at the machine itself (the direct-drive service manual's F7E0 wording for the stored version of the same event).

RL — rL (remove load) — items were detected in the drum during the Clean Washer with affresh cycle. The manuals print it lowercase 'rL' and gloss it in brackets as (remove load); on some models the same condition is written F34. rL is documented in Whirlpool and Maytag front-load owner manuals, in two places: the troubleshooting table ('"rL" (remove load) appears in display — load detected in drum during Clean Washer with affresh cycle') and the Clean Washer cycle description itself.

F5E2 — Door/lid lock will not lock — the control cannot confirm the door (front-load) or lid (top-load) is locked, so the cycle cannot start. F5E2 means the control commanded the lock and the lock didn't confirm.

F21 — Long drain — the washer is taking too long to drain (Whirlpool's drain fault; F9E1 is its sibling rendering on Duet platforms). F21 means the control ran the drain pump and the water level didn't fall fast enough.

Frequently asked questions

How full is too full?

Whirlpool's manuals give no fraction for OL — the machine decides by load size against capacity, and a load it drains and refuses at fill was too much by definition. The loading note printed with this code family is to load garments in loose heaps evenly around the basket wall and not above the stainless-steel portion of the basket.

What does OL mean on a Kenmore Elite washer?

The Kenmore Elite top-loaders that show OL are the Oasis line — model prefix 110, built by Whirlpool on the Cabrio platform — and their manual prints the same oL entry as Whirlpool's: the washer attempted to fill and begin the wash, detected an overload, and will drain any water and detergent added during the fill. Remove several items, add detergent again, close the lid and press START. It is not an LG-platform code, so 796 Kenmore guidance does not apply to it.

Does the washer drain when it shows OL?

Yes — on the Cabrio/Bravos/Oasis platform that is part of the documented behaviour, not a second fault: if the washer is overloaded, it will drain any water and detergent that was added during the fill. That is why the manuals tell you to add detergent again when you restart the reduced load, and why an OL stop leaves an emptier tub than owners expect.

Is OL the same fault as F0E3 on newer Whirlpool and Maytag washers?

Yes — same fault family, newer spelling. The direct-drive service chart defines F0E3 as overload: the main control detects a load size that exceeds the washer's capacity, or the basket cannot be turned, with mechanical friction on the drive mechanism as the second branch. oL/F70 is the Cabrio-era display and stored pair for the same two conditions. The fix order is identical: remove excess laundry and restart; if it posts on modest loads, chase friction, starting with an item between the basket and the tub.

Why does my Maytag Bravos show OL on a load that is not full?

Because OL judges weight and basket behaviour, not how full the basket looks. The Bravos manual's oL entry is the platform's: load too large — and the stored-code chart adds the second condition, a basket that cannot disengage or turn because of mechanical friction. A single waterlogged item can trip the first; a friction problem trips the second on any load size. The test is the manual restart with several items removed: a Bravos that then runs was overloaded; one that posts OL again on the small load is reporting friction, and the basket's free movement by hand is the next check.
