Whirlpool, Maytag & Kenmore Washer LF Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Whirlpool Washer display showing LF — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Long fill — the washer is taking too long to fill (water inlet fault).

LF means the control opened the inlet valves and the level rose too slowly. It is the fill-side twin of F21: supply-side restrictions (taps, screens, pressure) first, the valve second, and level sensing last. (The same letters on a GE refrigerator mean something entirely different — codes live inside their brand+appliance.) LF earns a closer reading because its name invites the wrong repair. 'Long fill' sounds like a valve complaint, yet the manufacturers' checklists spend almost all their words on the supply around the valve: two faucets, two hoses, two screens, house pressure, and even the drain hose that can steal the fill back. The control contributes only a stopwatch — it opens the valves, waits for the level, and posts LF when patience runs out. That is why 'LF code on Maytag washer' is really a plumbing question in most homes: Bravos and Cabrio manuals answer LF with taps and screens, not parts. The valve is the last suspect, reached only when both supplies are proven strong at the machine.

Applies to: Whirlpool-platform top-load washers in letter-code form (Maytag Bravos and Whirlpool Cabrio manuals both list LF verbatim); the same long-fill fault renders as F8E1 / Lo FL on F##E# front-load and later top-load models.
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the LF code on a Whirlpool washer?

Taps partly closed / hoses kinked

The commonest story.

Clogged inlet screens

Sediment throttles flow.

Low house pressure

Timed fills fail when pressure sags.

Inlet valve failure

A solenoid out or a stuck valve.

Fill water leaving by the drain hose as fast as it enters

A long fill is judged on level, not flow, so a fill that drains away fools it completely. Maytag's guidance for the sibling F8E1 code includes checking the drain hose installation: a hose pushed too far into the standpipe, or ending below the tub's water level, siphons each fill straight back out. Water is heard entering, yet the waited-for level never arrives — LF posts with the supply side entirely innocent.

One temperature side starved while the other flows freely

The Bravos and Cabrio manuals' LF checks assume both faucets: are the hot AND cold faucets turned on, are both hoses clear, are both valve screens clean? A cycle that calls for warm water draws from both inlets, so a single closed faucet, one kinked hose, or one screen matted with sediment halves the fill rate and doubles the fill time. LF that appears on warm cycles but never on cold-only cycles is this branch introducing itself.

Anti-flood or leak-limiting hoses throttling the supply

For the F8E1 rendering of this fault, Maytag states plainly that the washer should be connected directly to the water supply for optimum performance, and that anti-flood devices can reduce the pressure and the amount of water entering the appliance. A flood-safe hose whose internal shut-off has partly tripped behaves exactly like a half-closed faucet: nothing at the washer is broken, yet every fill runs long and LF becomes a regular visitor.

Pressure below the platform's working floor

Maytag's technical guidance for LF notes these washers are designed for a supply pressure of 20 to 100 PSI, and below 20 PSI fills slow down, dispensers misbehave, and valves may not seat properly. A weak supply line, a partly closed house stop, or an upstream pressure problem all present as a washer fault while the washer is simply reporting its plumbing.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Taps fully open; hose run checked.
  2. Clean the inlet screens at the valve.
  3. Bucket-test tap flow.
  4. Follow the Bravos/Cabrio manual's LF list literally, because it is short and complete: both faucets fully on, inlet hoses neither kinked nor clogged, inlet valve screens clear — then press POWER/CANCEL to clear the display and run a fill test before suspecting any part.
  5. Test the two temperatures separately: start a cold-only fill and time it, then a warm fill. A fill that is brisk on cold and slow on warm (or the reverse) isolates the fault to one faucet, one hose, or one screen, and saves you cleaning parts that were never involved.
  6. Watch the drain hose during a fill that seems to be going nowhere: water trickling continuously from the drain while the washer fills proves the siphon branch — the fill is succeeding and being stolen, and the cure is hose installation, not inlet parts.
  7. Check for an anti-flood device in the supply line if LF began after new hoses were fitted: Maytag warns these devices reduce pressure and flow, so a bucket test taken through the suspect hose (rather than at the bare faucet) is what separates a throttled hose from a weak house supply.
  8. Note the sibling behaviour on F##E# models: Maytag's F8E1 page warns the door may be locked and the control unresponsive, and pressing Power starts a drain routine of about 8 to 10 minutes with the pump running continuously and no input accepted — documented behaviour, not a second fault.

How to fix the LF error code

  1. Restore flow; replace the valve if a solenoid meters open.
  2. Check the level-sensor hose if water enters well but LF persists.
  3. Correct a siphoning drain installation: withdraw the drain hose so only its end sits in the standpipe, secure it with the hose form and an air gap rather than a sealed fit, and confirm a fill now stays in the tub — an LF cured this way needs no inlet work at all.
  4. Replace anti-flood supply hoses with standard hoses connected directly to the supply, as Maytag directs for optimum performance, after proving with a bucket test that the hose — not the house — is where the flow dies.
  5. Restore a starved temperature side at its own point of failure: open its faucet fully, straighten or replace its hose, or clean its inlet screen (supply off, hose removed, screen lifted out and rinsed), then retest on the warm cycle that originally faulted.
  6. If house pressure genuinely sits below the platform's 20 PSI floor, the washer cannot be repaired into filling faster: the fix is plumbing-side (a partly closed stop opened, a failing pressure regulator serviced), and until then, expect LF at busy times and run fills when household demand is low.

The part that usually fails: Water inlet valve assembly

Compare the solenoids' continuity; an open one condemns the assembly.

Whirlpool washer error code lf reset

Power-cycle; LF clears on a normal-speed fill.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the LF code keep coming back?

LF tracking busy household water times = pressure sag; constant LF = valve or sensor hose. A returning LF keeps a diary you can read. Faults clustering at shower-and-sprinkler hours are pressure sag, clearing when the house is quiet. Faults locked to one temperature are one-sided restrictions and never migrate. Faults that began with new hoses are the anti-flood branch, and faults that began after any plumbing work — a water heater swap, a softener install, street works — are debris in the screens, which will keep refilling with grit until the supply settles. Match the pattern first, and the fix is usually the manual's three checks performed at the right address, rather than a second new valve fitted to a healthy machine.

Can you still use the washer with LF showing? No cycles until it fills properly.

How to stop LF coming back

When to call a pro. Supply + valve proven + persistent LF = sensor/board diagnosis.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Whirlpool washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Whirlpool washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
5DSuds detected — 5D is how some Whirlpool displays render the Sd suds code (7-segment 5/S confusion).Let the suds routine finish.
A09Compact front-load: no water detected entering; level switch trip not seen in time.Open the supply valves and clean inlet screens; test the pressure switch.
A10Compact front-load: long drain; drain time exceeds four minutes.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
DLDoor lock error — the door latch/lock failed to lock (front-load, older Duet rendering; the F5E2 of its generation).Replace the door latch/lock assembly if closure is sound.
DRFront-load: door not opened between consecutive cycles, code F5E4 shown as DR.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DUCabrio top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid and wait for the basket to stop before retrying.
E01Part of a split F-code display — E01 is the second half of codes like F8E1/F9E1; read it together with the F-code shown alternately (on this platform the common pairing for drain topics is F9 E1 = drain pump system error).Diagnose the completed code using its own guide (drain, fill, or motor family).
E1The E-half of an alternating Whirlpool F-code (see E01) — or, on some Whirlpool-built platforms, a thermistor/sensor rendering. Identify the full code from the display before diagnosing.Diagnose the completed code with its family guide (drain/fill/motor/sensor).
F0E1Front-load: load detected while running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove all items from the drum and restart the Clean Washer cycle empty.
F0E2Oversuds detected; washer pauses to reduce foam before continuing.Run a rinse and spin cycle; use only HE detergent in the correct amount.
F0E3Top-load: overload detected; load exceeds capacity or basket cannot turn.Remove excess laundry, check for wedged items, and restart the cycle.
F0E5Off-balance load detected, also shown as OB on some models.Redistribute items evenly; check suspension if the basket bounces more than once.
F0E7Top-load: load detected when running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove any load from the basket before running the Clean Washer cycle.
F1Control board error — the main electronic control has detected an internal fault (EEPROM/control failure family). If the reset clears it and it stays away for weeks, log it and carry on.

Codes LF gets confused with

F21 — Long drain — the washer is taking too long to drain (Whirlpool's drain fault; F9E1 is its sibling rendering on Duet platforms). F21 means the control ran the drain pump and the water level didn't fall fast enough.

HF — Water inlet problem — the code is FH (owners read the alternating F/H display as 'HF'): no water detected entering the machine, or the pressure switch trip was not detected. HF is how owners transcribe the Duet-era FH fault: the display alternates F and H, and Whirlpool's Duet manual names it 'FH (Water Inlet Problem — no or insufficient water supply)'.

OL — Overload — the load size exceeds the washer's capacity (displayed oL on Cabrio/Bravos/Oasis top-loaders, stored as F70 on that platform and as F0E3 on newer F/E platforms). OL (oL) means the control judged the load too heavy to proceed.

F3E1 — Pressure system fault — the main control detects an out-of-range pressure (water level) signal (written F03 E01 on zero-padded displays). F3E1 indicts the level-sensing system: the pressure signal reaching the control is out of range or implausible.

Frequently asked questions

LF on my washer vs LF on a fridge?

Unrelated: washer LF = long fill. Always read codes within their own brand and appliance.

What does error code LF mean on a Maytag washer?

LF means Long Fill: the washer opened its inlet valves and the water level rose too slowly, so the control ended the attempt. Maytag's Bravos manuals print the code with three checks — are the hot and cold faucets turned on, are the inlet hoses kinked or clogged, and are the inlet valve screens clear — and direct you to press POWER/CANCEL to clear the display. On newer Maytag models the identical fault is written F8E1 or Lo FL instead.

How do I reset the LF error code on a Whirlpool washer?

On the letter-code Whirlpool and Maytag top-loaders, the manual's clear is POWER/CANCEL: press it to clear the LF display after you have corrected the cause — faucets open, hoses unkinked, screens cleaned. Then reselect the cycle and start it. The code clears the moment a fill reaches level at normal speed; a reset pressed while the supply is still throttled simply schedules the same long fill and the same LF a few minutes later.

Why does my Maytag Bravos show LF even though water is entering?

Because LF judges the level reached, not the sound of water moving. Three explanations fit a Bravos that audibly fills yet still posts LF: the fill is genuinely slow on one temperature side (one faucet, hose, or screen restricted), the house pressure has sagged below the roughly 20 PSI these washers need, or the water is leaving again through a drain hose installed so it siphons the fill straight out. The drain-hose check is the one owners miss, because nothing about it sounds like a fill problem.

Is LF on a Whirlpool Cabrio the same fault as F8E1 on a Maytag front-loader?

Yes — one long-fill fault in two generations of handwriting. Cabrio and Bravos manuals print it as LF with the faucet, hose, and screen checks; F##E# models such as Maytag front-loaders print it as F8E1, sometimes shortened to Lo FL. The diagnosis is identical: prove both supplies, clean both screens, rule out a drain-hose siphon, and only then judge the inlet valve.

What does error code lf mean on maytag washer?

Long fill — the washer is taking too long to fill (water inlet fault). LF means the control opened the inlet valves and the level rose too slowly.
