Whirlpool, Maytag & Kenmore Washer F5E2 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Whirlpool Washer display showing F5E2 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Door/lid lock will not lock — the control cannot confirm the door (front-load) or lid (top-load) is locked, so the cycle cannot start.

F5E2 means the control commanded the lock and the lock didn't confirm. The washer won't start (or stops at start). Door/lid closure and obstructions first, then the lock assembly — a well-known wear part — then wiring. On top-loaders Whirlpool's chart adds a cause owners miss: wash-media (detergent and lint) buildup preventing the lock bolt from extending. The family is pinned exactly: F5E1 is the door/lid switch, F5E2 is will-not-lock, F5E3 is will-not-unlock. The two manufacturer wordings of F5E2 describe one test with two doors. The front-load chart (Maytag MHW family) reads: 'F5E2 — Door Lock Will Not Lock or Door Lock Failure. Fault is displayed when one of the following conditions occur: door will not close completely due to interference; ACU detects open door switch when attempting to lock.' The top-load chart (W10864849) reads: 'F5E2 — Lid Lock Will Not Lock or Lid Lock Failure', with conditions: lid not closed completely due to interference; lock interference with the lid or lock bezel; wash media buildup preventing the lock bolt from extending; main control detects open lid switch when attempting to lock; main control cannot determine if the lid lock is in a locked state. Put together, the code never says 'the lock is broken' — it says the lock was commanded and confirmation never arrived, and the charts split that failure into interference (the door/lid never truly shut), detection (the switch still reads open), and determination (the control cannot tell). Keep the family pinned while you work: F5E1 is the switch reporting open while locked, F5E2 is will-not-lock, F5E3 is will-not-unlock — three different confirmations failing, three different repairs.

Applies to: Whirlpool, Maytag and Whirlpool-built Kenmore washers with F##E# codes — front-load door locks AND top-load lid locks; Whirlpool/Maytag service manuals print F5E2 for both ('Door Lock Will Not Lock' on front-load charts, 'Lid Lock Will Not Lock or Lid Lock Failure' on top-load charts such as W10864849).
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the F5E2 code on a Whirlpool washer?

Door/lid not fully shut / item in the seal or under the lid

The latch never reaches the lock.

Door/lid lock assembly failure

The lock's mechanism or switch has failed.

Wash-media buildup at the lock (top-load)

Detergent/lint buildup prevents the lock bolt from extending — a condition printed in Whirlpool's top-load fault chart.

Wash-media buildup preventing the lock bolt from extending (top-load)

This cause is printed in Whirlpool's top-load chart in those words, and it is the one top-load owners never suspect because the lid itself is clean. The lock bolt has to slide out of its housing into the lid strike; detergent residue, lint and fabric-softener film accumulate in that housing over years until the bolt's travel shortens by the millimetre that matters. The signature is an F5E2 that began intermittently — a second close, a press on the lid corner, would start the cycle — and hardened into every cycle. Cleaning the lock area and bezel is therefore a chart step on this platform, not a folk remedy, and it belongs before the lock assembly is condemned.

The switch that still reads open while the lock tries

Both charts carry the same electrical condition: the control detects an open door/lid switch when attempting to lock. That phrasing covers two physical stories with the same display — a lock whose bolt genuinely never engages (worn or jammed mechanism), and a lock that engages mechanically while its confirming switch or the harness back to the control never reports it. You cannot separate those two from the display, which is why the chart's route is a lock test (TEST #8: Lid Lock on the top-load manual) rather than a part name. It is also why a brand-new lock that changes nothing points back along the harness and to the control's lock input, not at a second new lock.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Clear the seal (or under-lid area); close firmly with an even push.
  2. Match the control's own conditions: Whirlpool lists a door/lid not closed completely due to interference, and an open door/lid switch detected while attempting to lock — if it audibly tries and fails, you are in the second condition.
  3. On top-loaders, inspect the lock and lock bezel for interference and buildup before suspecting electrics.
  4. Run the product-help sequence first, in its order, because it is free: open the door and firmly close it (a door may look closed but not be latched); check for laundry items sticking out beyond the door opening and reduce the load if needed; then cycle power to the control — disconnect from the power source for 5 minutes, reconnect — and retry. If the error code returns after that sequence, the manufacturer's own next step is service, not more resets.
  5. Listen and watch for the attempt: a lock that clicks repeatedly is trying and failing to confirm (interference, buildup, or a tired mechanism); a machine that never attempts — no click at all on Start — fits the detection/determination conditions and belongs on the TEST #8 route sooner.
  6. On top-loaders, add the bezel check the chart names: inspect for lock interference with the lid or the lock bezel itself, and look for the buildup ring around the bolt opening before reaching for tools.

How to fix the F5E2 error code

  1. Replace the door/lid lock assembly if the door latches but F5E2 persists.
  2. Clean buildup from the lock bolt area; reseat the lock harness; remove whatever interferes with the lid/door or lock bezel.
  3. Clean the lock bolt housing and bezel (top-load) or the strike and seal area (front-load) as a repair step in its own right, then retest — on the buildup branch this is the whole fix, and it is the only version of this repair that costs nothing.
  4. If closure, cleanliness and the 5-minute power cycle are all proven and F5E2 still posts, replace the lock assembly; if a new lock changes nothing, stop swapping locks and follow the chart route (TEST #8 lock testing, harness continuity to the control, then control diagnosis).

The part that usually fails: Door lock assembly

The standard cure; internal switches aren't serviced separately.

How to reset / clear the F5E2 code

Clears when a lock confirms. Whirlpool-family product help adds the control reset: disconnect power for 5 minutes, reconnect, close firmly and press Start; if the code returns, schedule service.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the F5E2 code keep coming back?

F5E2 returning mid-cycle under vibration = marginal lock contacts — replace before it strands a load locked. F5E2 returning after a lock replacement is the determination branch declaring itself: the new lock engages, and the control still cannot confirm it — harness continuity and the control's lock input are the remaining route (the top-load chart's TEST #8 sequence), and a second lock will read exactly like the first. F5E2 returning only when the machine is warm, or only under a full heavy load pressing the door outward, is the marginal version of the same story: a confirmation that barely makes it when conditions are kind. Either pattern is worth describing precisely to a technician — 'new lock, same code, only when hot' localises the fault faster than the code alone ever will.

Can you still use the washer with F5E2 showing? No — interlock by design; never defeat it.

How to stop F5E2 coming back

When to call a pro. Lock replaced + fault persists = wiring/board diagnosis. Door stuck locked = use the manual release via the pump-trap area per the manual.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Whirlpool washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Whirlpool washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
5DSuds detected — 5D is how some Whirlpool displays render the Sd suds code (7-segment 5/S confusion).Let the suds routine finish.
A09Compact front-load: no water detected entering; level switch trip not seen in time.Open the supply valves and clean inlet screens; test the pressure switch.
A10Compact front-load: long drain; drain time exceeds four minutes.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
DLDoor lock error — the door latch/lock failed to lock (front-load, older Duet rendering; the F5E2 of its generation).Replace the door latch/lock assembly if closure is sound.
DRFront-load: door not opened between consecutive cycles, code F5E4 shown as DR.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DUCabrio top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid and wait for the basket to stop before retrying.
E01Part of a split F-code display — E01 is the second half of codes like F8E1/F9E1; read it together with the F-code shown alternately (on this platform the common pairing for drain topics is F9 E1 = drain pump system error).Diagnose the completed code using its own guide (drain, fill, or motor family).
E1The E-half of an alternating Whirlpool F-code (see E01) — or, on some Whirlpool-built platforms, a thermistor/sensor rendering. Identify the full code from the display before diagnosing.Diagnose the completed code with its family guide (drain/fill/motor/sensor).
F0E1Front-load: load detected while running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove all items from the drum and restart the Clean Washer cycle empty.
F0E2Oversuds detected; washer pauses to reduce foam before continuing.Run a rinse and spin cycle; use only HE detergent in the correct amount.
F0E3Top-load: overload detected; load exceeds capacity or basket cannot turn.Remove excess laundry, check for wedged items, and restart the cycle.
F0E5Off-balance load detected, also shown as OB on some models.Redistribute items evenly; check suspension if the basket bounces more than once.
F0E7Top-load: load detected when running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove any load from the basket before running the Clean Washer cycle.
F1Control board error — the main electronic control has detected an internal fault (EEPROM/control failure family). If the reset clears it and it stays away for weeks, log it and carry on.

Codes F5E2 gets confused with

F5 — Door/lid lock fault family — F5 alone is the family header; the working codes are F5E1 (door switch), F5E2 (door/lid will not lock) and F5E3 (door/lid will not unlock). On Whirlpool's F##E# system, F5 covers the door (front-load) or lid (top-load) lock system.

OL — Overload — the load size exceeds the washer's capacity (displayed oL on Cabrio/Bravos/Oasis top-loaders, stored as F70 on that platform and as F0E3 on newer F/E platforms). OL (oL) means the control judged the load too heavy to proceed.

5D — Suds detected — 5D is how some Whirlpool displays render the Sd suds code (7-segment 5/S confusion). On Whirlpool's segmented displays, the suds code Sd is widely read — and on some panels effectively shown — as 5D.

RL — rL (remove load) — items were detected in the drum during the Clean Washer with affresh cycle. The manuals print it lowercase 'rL' and gloss it in brackets as (remove load); on some models the same condition is written F34. rL is documented in Whirlpool and Maytag front-load owner manuals, in two places: the troubleshooting table ('"rL" (remove load) appears in display — load detected in drum during Clean Washer with affresh cycle') and the Clean Washer cycle description itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is F5E2 expensive?

The lock assembly is one of the cheaper washer parts and a Moderate DIY — far cheaper than the board owners often fear.

What does F5 E2 mean on a Maytag washer — is it the door or the lid?

Both: F5E2 is one code used across the shared Whirlpool/Maytag platform. On Maytag front-loaders the chart heading is 'Door Lock Will Not Lock'; on Maytag top-loaders it is the lid lock that will not lock, with the same underlying conditions — the lid/door not closed completely due to interference, or the control detecting an open switch while attempting to lock. The E2 half always means will-not-lock; E1 is the switch member and E3 is will-not-unlock, on whichever opening your machine has.

Can detergent buildup really cause F5E2 on a top-load Whirlpool?

Yes — it is a printed condition in Whirlpool's top-load fault chart (W10864849): 'Wash media buildup is preventing the lock bolt from extending.' Residue and lint film inside the lock housing shorten the bolt's travel until it no longer reaches the locked position the control can confirm. Clean the lock and bezel area and retest before replacing the lock assembly; buildup is the one F5E2 cause that a cloth fixes.

How do I reset F5E2 on a Whirlpool front-load washer?

Follow the manufacturer's reset for this code: after checking the door is firmly latched with nothing sticking out of the opening, cycle power to the control — unplug the washer (or disconnect power) for 5 minutes, then reconnect and try a cycle. That reset clears a confused control state; it does not repair a lock. Whirlpool-family product help is explicit that if the error code returns after the power cycle, the next step is service — beginning with the lock assembly and its harness.
