Whirlpool, Maytag & Kenmore Washer F3E1 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Whirlpool Washer display showing F3E1 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Pressure system fault — the main control detects an out-of-range pressure (water level) signal (written F03 E01 on zero-padded displays).

F3E1 indicts the level-sensing system: the pressure signal reaching the control is out of range or implausible. The sensor reads tub air pressure through a thin hose running from the tub's air trap; hose faults (pinched, kinked, plugged, leaking air, or off its fitting) beat sensor faults statistically. Where the hose runs differs by platform — to a separate pressure switch/sensor on front-loaders, and to the main control itself on the direct-drive top-loaders, whose pressure transducer sits on the control. Read the display as one code, however it is padded: F3E1, F03 E01 and E01 F03 are the same fault — the F-part and E-part alternate on the panel, and the zeros are padding (the Maytag E01 page on this site covers the pairing rule in full). The platform scope matters more than the spelling. On front-loaders (the Maytag Maxima phrase in this article's searches is this platform), the fault list reads 'F3E1 — Water Level Sensor Fault: displayed when the ACU detects an out-of-range pressure signal', and its one printed check asks whether the pressure hose connection from the tub to the pressure switch is pinched, kinked, plugged, or leaking air. On the direct-drive top-loaders, service manual W10864849 prints the same code as 'F3E1 — Pressure System Fault: displayed when the main control detects an out of range pressure signal', but its hose runs from the tub to the main control, because the pressure transducer is part of that control. Same code, same first check, different second part — which is why the model platform, not the code, decides whether a 'sensor replacement' even exists on your machine.

Applies to: Whirlpool, Maytag and Whirlpool-built Kenmore washers with F##E# codes — front-loaders (separate pressure switch/sensor) and top-loaders (VMW and direct-drive; on the direct-drive models the transducer is on the main control, per service manual W10864849).
Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the F3E1 code on a Whirlpool washer?

Air hose compromised

Pinched, kinked, plugged, leaking air, or off its nipple — the service manual's four hose faults, in its own order.

Pressure sensor failure

Output stuck/out of range (front-load pattern; on direct-drive top-loaders this is the main control's transducer).

Connector corrosion at the sensor/board

Condensation at the top of the cabinet.

Blocked tub air trap / pressure port

Residue at the tub port plugs the air path the sensor reads — the VMW chart's 'tub port blocked' check.

A hose that leaks air slowly instead of blocking

Of the manual's four hose faults, leaking air is the one that hides. A plugged hose announces itself — blow through it and you feel the plug. A pinholed or perished hose passes that blow test easily, then bleeds pressure slowly while the tub fills, so the signal the control receives drifts out of range only under working conditions: the code tends to appear mid-fill or after the machine has stood full, and the hose looks innocent on the bench. Rub points are where to look — where the hose passes the tub rim, clips, or a cabinet edge — and the honest test is replacement or a careful inspection along its whole length, not another blow-through. This is also the usual explanation when F3E1 returns a week after a hose 'clearing' that seemed to fix it: the hose was never plugged, it was leaking.

The air trap plugging at the tub, not in the hose

The pressure system starts at a small air chamber (air trap/dome) on the tub, and the VMW diagnostic summary for F3-E1 lists 'tub port blocked' as its own check, separate from the hose. Detergent residue and lint sludge collect exactly there, at the bottom of the air path, and a hose can be perfectly clear while the port it connects to is capped with sludge. The symptom signature is a code that survives a hose replacement: the new hose delivers the same blocked pressure because the blockage was never in it. Clearing the port — power off, hose off at the tub end, clear the opening — is a five-minute check that sits between 'hose' and 'sensor' in the elimination order and is skipped in most failed DIY attempts.

A hose disturbed by a move, a repair, or the machine's own vibration

The manual's first check is the pressure hose CONNECTION — from tub to switch or control — before any of the four hose faults. A hose end pushed half onto its nipple during a house move, a panel refit, or years of spin vibration can sit visually connected while sealing badly enough to read out of range. This branch explains the F3E1 that appears immediately after the washer was moved, levelled, or opened for an unrelated repair, on a machine whose sensor tested fine: nothing failed, something was disturbed. Reseating both ends firmly — fully home on the nipple, not just touching it — is the fix, and it costs nothing, which is why it belongs ahead of every part on this code.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Inspect the hose end-to-end; confirm it's dry inside and firmly seated at both ends.
  2. Reseat the sensor connector; look for corrosion.
  3. Work the manual's hose checklist in order — pinched, kinked, plugged, or leaking air — and check the tub pressure port for blockage.
  4. Read F3E1 back out of diagnostic mode after your fix (see the diagnostic-mode guide for your platform): the stored copy confirms which code the control actually logged, and on alternating displays it removes any doubt about whether the pairing was F3 or a neighbouring F-code misread at a glance.
  5. Note when the code appears, because timing votes: at the very start of fill suggests a connection or a fully blocked air path; part-way through fill suggests a slow air leak; with a tub that then will not unlock and a pump that keeps running, the control cannot confirm the tub is empty — the protective behaviour the level family shows (let any drain routine finish rather than fighting it).
  6. If the machine has just been moved or serviced, put 'hose ends reseated' at the top of the list even before inspecting the hose body — the connection is the manual's first check for a reason.

How to fix whirlpool washer f3 e1 error codes?

  1. Clear/replace the hose with correct routing (no low water-trapping loops).
  2. Replace the pressure sensor if hose and connector are sound (front-load).
  3. On direct-drive top-loaders there is no separate sensor to swap: a proven hose plus a persistent out-of-range signal is main-control diagnosis (TEST #6: Water Level in W10864849).
  4. Replace a hose that is pinched flat, holed, perished or leaking rather than re-clearing it: a cleared plug stays fixed, a leaking hose does not, and the part is the cheapest in the system.
  5. On a front-loader, only after the hose and tub port are proven: replace the pressure switch/sensor. On a direct-drive top-loader, the same evidence points at the main control's transducer — the service manual's route is TEST #6: Water Level — so treat 'sensor replacement' advice for those models as a misread of the platform.

The part that usually fails: Water level pressure sensor + air hose

Hose first (free), connector second, sensor third — the elimination order. On direct-drive top-loaders the 'sensor' is the main control's transducer, so the third step is control diagnosis, not a sensor swap.

How to reset / clear the F3E1 code

Power-cycle after the fix; F3E1 clears on a plausible level at fill.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the F3E1 code keep coming back?

Returning F3E1 after a sensor swap = hose routing re-trapping water, or board-side connector corrosion. F3E1 that returns after a sensor replacement on a front-loader almost always means the fault was in the air path all along — a leaking hose that passed a blow test, or a tub port re-plugging with residue. F3E1 that returns on a top-loader after 'the sensor was replaced' usually means the platform was misread: there is no separate sensor on the direct-drive models, and the returning code is the main control repeating its out-of-range report through a hose nobody replaced. In both cases the correct move is one step deeper in the same system — hose, port, then the sensing element the platform actually has — not a second sensor.

Can you still use the washer with F3E1 showing? No — level is a core safety input.

How to stop F3E1 coming back

When to call a pro. All three replaced + code persists = board input diagnosis.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Whirlpool washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Whirlpool washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
5DSuds detected — 5D is how some Whirlpool displays render the Sd suds code (7-segment 5/S confusion).Let the suds routine finish.
A09Compact front-load: no water detected entering; level switch trip not seen in time.Open the supply valves and clean inlet screens; test the pressure switch.
A10Compact front-load: long drain; drain time exceeds four minutes.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
DLDoor lock error — the door latch/lock failed to lock (front-load, older Duet rendering; the F5E2 of its generation).Replace the door latch/lock assembly if closure is sound.
DRFront-load: door not opened between consecutive cycles, code F5E4 shown as DR.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DUCabrio top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid and wait for the basket to stop before retrying.
E01Part of a split F-code display — E01 is the second half of codes like F8E1/F9E1; read it together with the F-code shown alternately (on this platform the common pairing for drain topics is F9 E1 = drain pump system error).Diagnose the completed code using its own guide (drain, fill, or motor family).
E1The E-half of an alternating Whirlpool F-code (see E01) — or, on some Whirlpool-built platforms, a thermistor/sensor rendering. Identify the full code from the display before diagnosing.Diagnose the completed code with its family guide (drain/fill/motor/sensor).
F0E1Front-load: load detected while running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove all items from the drum and restart the Clean Washer cycle empty.
F0E2Oversuds detected; washer pauses to reduce foam before continuing.Run a rinse and spin cycle; use only HE detergent in the correct amount.
F0E3Top-load: overload detected; load exceeds capacity or basket cannot turn.Remove excess laundry, check for wedged items, and restart the cycle.
F0E5Off-balance load detected, also shown as OB on some models.Redistribute items evenly; check suspension if the basket bounces more than once.
F0E7Top-load: load detected when running the Clean Washer cycle.Remove any load from the basket before running the Clean Washer cycle.
F1Control board error — the main electronic control has detected an internal fault (EEPROM/control failure family). If the reset clears it and it stays away for weeks, log it and carry on.

Codes F3E1 gets confused with

PF — Power failure — power was interrupted during operation (a customer notification code, not a breakdown and not a stored service fault). PF tells you the control lost power during a cycle: an outage, a tripped breaker, a plug knocked loose — or, when no house event explains it, control voltage too low or lost at the machine itself (the direct-drive service manual's F7E0 wording for the stored version of the same event).

OL — Overload — the load size exceeds the washer's capacity (displayed oL on Cabrio/Bravos/Oasis top-loaders, stored as F70 on that platform and as F0E3 on newer F/E platforms). OL (oL) means the control judged the load too heavy to proceed.

RL — rL (remove load) — items were detected in the drum during the Clean Washer with affresh cycle. The manuals print it lowercase 'rL' and gloss it in brackets as (remove load); on some models the same condition is written F34. rL is documented in Whirlpool and Maytag front-load owner manuals, in two places: the troubleshooting table ('"rL" (remove load) appears in display — load detected in drum during Clean Washer with affresh cycle') and the Clean Washer cycle description itself.

F7E1 — Motor drive error — loss of motor speed signal / tachometer fault (the control can't confirm the motor is turning). F7E1 reports that the control isn't seeing correct speed feedback — the basket may not turn at all, or turns without the control knowing it.

Frequently asked questions

Can suds cause F3E1?

Not as the manuals tell it: suds carry their own code, F0E2, where the control flushes water to clear foam and the pressure sensor detects the rising suds level. F3E1 is the out-of-range pressure signal fault — work the hose checklist (pinched, kinked, plugged, leaking air) rather than reaching for a cleaning cycle.

How do I fix Whirlpool washer F3 E1 error codes — hose or sensor first?

Hose first, every time: both manufacturer fault lists put the pressure hose connection and its four faults (pinched, kinked, plugged, leaking air) ahead of the sensor, and the tub air-trap port belongs with the hose checks. The sensor is replaced only when a proven hose and a clear port still deliver an out-of-range signal — and on direct-drive top-loaders there is no separate sensor at all, because the transducer sits on the main control.

What does E1 F3 mean on a Kenmore washer?

Read in display order it looks reversed, but it is the same alternating pair: E1 with F3 is F3E1, the pressure system fault, on Whirlpool-built Kenmores that use the F/E code system. Watch the display through a full alternation to confirm the F-half, then work this page's hose checklist — pinched, kinked, plugged or leaking air — before any part. If your Kenmore is a 796 (LG-built) model it does not use this code at all; its level fault is PE in the LG system.

Can F3E1 keep the door locked while the pump keeps running?

Yes, and that behaviour is the level system protecting itself: if the control cannot read a plausible level it cannot confirm the tub is empty, so it keeps the door locked and runs the drain rather than unlocking onto water it believes may be there. Do not force the door. Let the drain routine complete, restore any lost water supply, then do the hose checks — the lockout is a symptom of the unreadable level, not a second fault.

How to fix whirlpool washer f3 e1 error codes?

Start here: Clear/replace the hose with correct routing (no low water-trapping loops). Replace the pressure sensor if hose and connector are sound (front-load).
