Speed Queen Washer Error Codes List: Every Code Explained
Every Speed Queen washer error code we could verify against Speed Queen's own documentation — what it means, what usually causes it, and the first fix to try — in one table. Codes differ between model series, so treat your model's tech sheet as the final word.
How to read and retrieve error codes on Speed Queen washers
Speed Queen controls provide a service/diagnostic mode (key combination on the control pad, per the service manual) listing stored errors for each load component.
The complete Speed Queen washer error code list
| Code | Meaning | Most likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alrn | Commercial break-in alarm error (shown as Alrn, ALrn or ALArn): the control is reporting a break-in alarm condition | The service door or coin vault switches - an opened service door or coin vault with the alarm enabled | Service the service door or coin vault switches; on washer-extractors, power down the machine to clear if auto-shutdown is on |
| E Co | Commercial front-load drive board communication error: communication between the front-end control and the drive board has failed; the manual notes it can be caused by cycle counters that need to be reset by restarting the control | A loose pin or wire between the front-end control and the drive board is the manual's most common finding | Unplug the washer, wait 30 seconds and reapply power to clear; if it persists, check the connection between front-end control and drive board - board replacement is the last step |
| E FL | Commercial fill error: the programmed water level was not reached within the programmed fill time - 30 minutes on the front-load and top-load tables, 5 to 90 minutes on washer-extractors | No water pressure at the inlets, valves not operating, a clog in the water line or a plugged hose filter screen, an air leak in the pressure sensor hose, or a programmed fill time too short for the level and pressure | End the cycle and power down to clear; check inlet pressure, valve operation and screens first - supply checks an attendant can do, valve and sensor-hose work is service |
| E FS | Washer-extractor (Ripon made) frame balance switch error: the frame balance switch is open | The frame balance switch circuit open during the cycle | End the cycle; the switch and its circuit are service work - do not confuse this with a load-balance code, it reports the switch, not the load |
| E Hd | Commercial front-load too-hot-to-drain error (E Hd / Er, Hd): the water is detected to be too hot to drain safely | No cool-down step after a heating step, or a heater contactor/relay stuck on keeping the water hot | The error displays after the door is opened at end of cycle and clears after 1 minute; the manual's prevention is a cool-down step after every heating step - a stuck contactor is service work |
| E Ht | Commercial heater error (models equipped with a heater): the programmed temperature has not been reached in more than two hours; the heater output turns off and the cycle continues | An inoperative heater circuit - damaged harness to the heater elements, failed elements, or corroded wires/connectors | Heater circuit components are service work; the error clears when the door is opened or any key is pressed, but a repeat means the heater circuit must be tested |
| E II | Commercial top-load lid unlock error: on machines with a lid lock, the lid does not unlock after three attempts | The lid obstructed so it cannot unlatch, the control not detecting a correct state for the lock, or a harness fault between the lock and the output board (rarely, the lock itself has failed) | Clear anything obstructing the lid and check the wire harness from the lock to the output board; if the wiring is correct, the manual's remedy is to replace the lock |
| E PS | Commercial pressure sensor error: the control does not detect a valid water level sensor input for 30 seconds (front-load), or is not getting a valid reading from the pressure sensor (top-load) | Sensor harness not connected to the front-end control, a damaged or broken sensor wire, or a blockage in the pressure tube/hose | Check the harness from the user control to the pressure sensor; the front-load control first drains for 30 seconds, then unlocks the door - unpower to clear, and replace the sensor or control if it persists |
| E Pr | Washer-extractor pressure switch error: the low level pressure switch is in an incorrect position at a point after the first fill step (production test wording), also tabled as a pressure switch sequence error - the pressure switches are out of sequence | A pressure switch reading out of sequence with the machine's fill state | The cycle will terminate; power down the machine to clear - the manual's remedy for the sequence form is to change the pressure switch |
| E SH | Commercial shorted thermistor error: the thermistor circuit is shorted while heating; the heater turns off and the cycle continues (front-load drive-board tables flag it above 100 C / 212 F, washer-extractor tables above 220 F / 104 C) | A short in the thermistor circuit - sensor or wiring | Check the wiring to the heater elements and thermistor for damage; the code shows at the end of the cycle and clears after one minute or with any key press |
| E SP | Commercial SPI / serial communications error: the front-end (master) control cannot communicate with the output board / motor control | A transformer unplugged or inoperative, a blown fuse on the motor control board, or wiring to the motor/output control incorrect | Power down the machine, power up and try again; the front-load control retries the motor control three times before displaying the error - persistent failure is control/wiring service |
| E Sd | Commercial slow drain error (front-load and top-load): water is not draining as quickly as expected in a cycle step that drains; top-load tables time it at longer than 185 seconds to drain | A restriction slowing the drain - pump obstruction or a restricted drain hose | Check the pump for obstructions and the drain hose for restrictions and clear them; the front-load control lights the right-most decimal point after the display clears, cleared by pressing START 3 times in 5 seconds or cycling power |
| E StHt | Commercial front-load slow-to-heat error: a non-fatal error that appears during the running cycle without affecting the cycle, on for 15 seconds | One of the heater elements broken or disconnected, elements fouled with lint, or the programmed slow-to-heat time too short for the load size and water amount | It clears after a key is pressed; repeated appearances mean the heater elements and their connections need service |
| E Ub | Commercial washer-extractor unbalance error: the machine is unable to balance the load | Load bunched or unevenly distributed for the extraction (spin) step | Redistribute the load and retry; power down to clear on the tables that require it |
| E Ub1 | Commercial front-load non-fatal unbalance error (Er, ub family): the washer is unable to balance the load but the fault is recoverable | Uneven load, a small load or one large item, rubber or water-resistant items that may never reach full spin speed, a machine not levelled, or broken shocks | Redistribute the load and run the cycle; add items to a small load, level the machine and check for broken shocks if it repeats |
| E Ub2 | Commercial front-load fatal unbalance error (Er, Ub family): the unbalance protection itself has failed, not just the load | Wires to the unbalance switch broken or not connected, the unbalance switch stuck closed, or a broken shock | Unpower to clear the error; switch wiring and shocks are service work - redistributing the load does not fix this version |
| E bELt | Commercial front-load broken belt error (also rendered Er, bb): the control has detected a broken belt | A broken drive belt or a pulley problem, per the control's detection | Unpower the machine and check the belt and pulleys for issues - belt access is service work on a commercial front-load |
| E bS | Commercial board shorted error (E bS / Er, bS): the output board's enable relay is shorted - a hardware failure | Output board not operating properly; the top-load table directs a harness inspection first | Inspect the wire harnesses to the output board; if the wiring is not damaged, replace the output board - power the machine down to clear |
| E dF | Commercial front-load / washer-extractor drive failure: the drive has failed to run the motor | Motor unplugged, motor failure, tachometer circuit open, or the drum locked up | Unpower the machine to reset; if it returns, motor, tachometer circuit and a freely turning drum are technician checks |
| E dL1 | Commercial front-load door lock non-fatal error: the door fails to lock in 20 seconds in Door Locking Mode after the drive has been enabled, and the control turns off all outputs | Door not fully closed - overloading or broken shocks can keep it from closing properly - or a damaged door lock, latch or lock wire harness | Check the door is fully closed first; the error clears when the door opens or locks - lock, latch and harness damage is service work |
| E dL2 | Commercial front-load door unlock non-fatal error (also shown as Er, dU on this platform): the door fails to unlock 20 seconds after the drum has stopped, on solenoid-type door locks | Load pressure on the door and latch, broken shocks, or a damaged door lock, latch or harness | Removing power for 3 minutes lets the lock unlock; press on the door, then pull. If it still will not unlock, lock and latch service is needed |
| E dS | Commercial brownout / voltage configuration error: the control reads an unexpected supply voltage | Dip switch #1 set wrong (often after a front-end control replacement), a disconnect in the power-fail signal at the H2 connector, or harness trouble between the front-end control and the drive/output board | Power down, set dip switch #1 to match the previous control / the machine's supply voltage, check the H2 connection, then power up and try again |
| E db | Washer-extractor (Ripon made) drive balance switch error: the variable-frequency-drive balance switch was closed at the start of a drain step | The VFD balance switch input made at the wrong point in the cycle - a switch or its input circuit fault | Power down the machine; the related frame balance switch error (E FS, switch open) ends the cycle - both are technician checks, not load checks |
| E do | Commercial door open error (E do / E:dO): the control detects the door open, with the door-locked input also made | Pulling on the door while it is locked or about to lock, or an inoperative door locking system | Correct the door locking system fault; end the cycle and power the machine down to clear the error |
| E dr | Commercial drain alarm error (E dr / E:dr): the machine did not drain - maximum drain time exceeded, or water sensed at the end of spin (washer-extractor wording) | A blocked drain path or pump; the front-load table adds drain wiring and drain height - the manual's default drain attempt before the error is a programmable 5 minutes | Power down the machine; check for objects stuck in the drain hose or pump and that the drain hose meets the height restrictions, then clear restrictions before re-running |
| E id | Commercial board ID error: an incorrect replacement control has been fitted | The user control or output/drive board in the machine is not the correct part for this machine type | Replace the user control or output board with the correct part; a related front-load reading, Er, id, is the drive board ID error - the drive board and front-end control are found not to match, cleared by unpowering |
| E nr | Commercial drive / output board not ready error (E nr / Er, nr): a hardware failure in the drive or output board | Output/drive board not operating properly - on top-load commercial tables the board is not ready within one minute | Try cycling power to the machine before replacing the drive/output board; if the error persists, board replacement is the manual's remedy |
| E oF | Commercial overflow error: an unsafe high water level is detected and the water is unable to drain (top-load tables: the control was not able to lower the water level within 5 minutes) | A water valve stuck open, a pump stuck, a clogged drain, or - typically on pump machines - a small item lodged in the pump propeller; top-load tables add a leaky valve, a blocked pressure hose or an air leak in it | Unpower to clear the error; shut the water off if the tub is overfilling and clear the pump/drain - valve and pressure-hose faults are service work |
| E oP | Commercial open thermistor / open temperature sensor error: the thermistor circuit opens while heating; the heater turns off and the cycle continues (washer-extractor tables set the trigger below 0 F / -18 C) | An open in the thermistor circuit - sensor or its wiring | Inspect and replace the thermistor if necessary; on washer-extractors the heater and thermistor operations stay disabled for that cycle |
| E ro | Washer-extractor rotation sensor error: an invalid signal from the rotation sensor | A rotation sensor signal the control cannot use - sensor or its signal path | The control activates coast times to complete the cycle; sensor diagnosis is technician work |
| E rr | Commercial coin error: the control received an invalid coin pulse, or the coin sensor is inoperative | An obstruction in the coin drop area, a failed coin sensor, or tampering with the coin mechanism | Check the coin drop area and remove obstructions; if the error persists, tampering may have occurred - review security procedures |
| E tE | Commercial front-load maximum temperature exceeded error (E tE / Er, tE): the control has monitored the machine status and saved this error when the maximum water temperature was exceeded | A stuck heater relay or contactor is the manual's named check | The control shows the error for one minute after the cycle, once the door is opened or a key is pressed; a stuck heater relay/contactor is service work |
| E tp | Commercial top-load thermal protect error: the motor's thermal protection has tripped | The motor is failing or has been overloaded; the related residential-style table adds brakes or transmission not functioning properly | Check whether the machine was overloaded and check the pump and transmission for proper function; if the control then displays Push Start, push start to continue the cycle |
| E:0d | Commercial top-load pressure switch error (E:0d in the electronic-control table) | Fill or drain hoses improperly installed or kinked, a fault in the fill electrical circuit, or an inoperative pressure switch or its wires | Check the fill and drain hoses for improper installation and kinks and the fill circuit; replacing inoperative switches or wires is service work |
| EI0F | Infra-red communication error: invalid wakeup or infra-red disabled - communication failed, or infra-red is disabled on the control | Infra-red programmed off, or the external device mis-aimed (angle or distance) | Manually enable infra-red on the control, re-aim the external device and try again |
| EI01 | Infra-red communication error (electronic controls): transmission failure between the control and an external programming device | A communication failure - the external device mis-aimed at the infra-red communicator, or the link interrupted | Re-aim the external device and try again; this family reports the programming link, not a wash fault |
| EI03 | Infra-red communication error: invalid command code - communication succeeded, but the command was not valid for this machine type, or the control could not perform it in its current mode | Data meant for a different machine type, or the control in the wrong mode for the command sent | Ensure the data is for the current machine type and the control is in the correct mode of operation, then try again |
| EI05 | Infra-red communication error: invalid or out-of-range data - the value in at least one programming option is invalid or out of range | A programming value outside the option's allowed minimum/maximum, or data for the wrong machine type | Recheck the programming option's value, confirm the values are within limits and for this machine type, and try again |
| Ed | Not a complete code on its own: Ed is the drive/output-board error prefix on commercial controls, and the number that follows it identifies the fault - front-load tables run Ed 10 to Ed 64 (see the Ed rows in this table), washer-extractor drive tables run Ed01 to Ed11 with different meanings for the same numbers, and top-load tables print a generic Ed, XX for an error received from the output board | Depends entirely on the number after Ed and on which control family is displaying it - the same Ed number is a different fault on a front-load control and on a washer-extractor drive | Record the full reading, number included, plus the model number, and match it to the Ed rows for your control family; every Ed table entry is cleared by unpowering the machine, and a returning Ed number is drive/output-board service work |
| Ed 10 | Commercial front-load drive board error: voltage select error - the wrong input voltage is seen at the drive board (120V vs 240V) | Dip switch 1 on the front-end control set wrong, or possibly water on the drive board | Unpower to clear; let the drive dry out and find the cause of any water - replace the drive board if the error persists |
| Ed 12 | Commercial front-load drive board error: over-voltage AC-main input error - the machine voltage is too high | Supply voltage to the machine above the machine's specification | Check the supply voltage and verify it is within machine specifications; unpower to clear - replace the drive board if the error persists on a correct supply |
| Ed 21 | Commercial front-load drive board error: over-voltage DC bus error | A DC bus over-voltage at the drive; the manual separates the timing - if it happens only at the start of spin, the motor is implicated | Unpower to clear and check the voltage input to the machine; if it occurs only at start of spin, replace the motor - replace the drive board if the error persists |
| Ed 22 | Commercial front-load drive board error: over motor temperature error - the motor temperature is detected to be too high | Overloading, a drum that does not spin freely, a damaged motor harness, or agitation timing (very short rotate/pause duty) overheating the motor | Check the empty drum spins freely, reduce the load, and check the motor harness; unpower to clear - replace the drive board if the error persists |
| Ed 23 | Commercial front-load drive board error: fatal IPM over-current shunt error | An over-current condition at the drive's power module; the manual's checks are a drum/motor that does not spin freely and motor phase windings that are not uniform | Check drum and motor spin freely and test phase continuity (uniform between L1-L2, L2-L3 and L1-L3); unpower to clear - replace the motor if windings are not uniform, the drive board if the error persists |
| Ed 24 | Commercial front-load drive board error: fatal I2T hardware over-current error | A locked rotor, or motor phase windings not uniform, driving the hardware over-current protection | Check the drum and motor spin freely and the rotor is not locked up, and test the phase windings as for Ed 23; unpower to clear - replace the motor or drive board as the checks indicate |
| Ed 25 | Commercial front-load drive board error: IPM over-temperature error - the drive power module temperature is detected to be too high | Overloading, a drum not spinning freely, short rotate/pause duty cycles, or lint build-up on the heat sink on the drive board | Check the empty drum spins freely, reduce the load, and check for lint on the drive heat sink; unpower to clear - replace the drive board if the error persists |
| Ed 29 | Commercial front-load drive board error: motor not connected error - the motor, or one of its electrical phases, is not connected | The harness from the motor to the drive board not fully plugged in at either end, a damaged motor harness, or something binding the inner basket (a garment or foreign object caught between the tubs, or a clothes deflector rubbing the basket) | Push the motor harness fully in at both ends and remove anything binding the basket; unpower to clear - if the harness is sound and the error stays, drive board or harness replacement is service work |
| Ed 44-56 | Commercial front-load drive board hardware-fail group: Ed 44 is the over-current shunt detection circuit fail error, and Ed 45 to Ed 56 are individual pin on/off hardware fails (door lock pin 45, heater pin 46, hot valve 47, cold valve 48, detergent valve 49, softener valve 50, inrush 51, voltage doubler 52, door lock select voltage 53, pump 54), ending with Ed 55 fatal NTC short and Ed 56 fatal NTC open, which direct a check of the heater thermistor and its wiring | Hardware failure in the drive board circuit named by the number; for 55/56, a shorted or open heater thermistor circuit | Unpower to clear; for 55/56 check the thermistor and wiring first - for the rest of the group the manual's remedy, if the error persists, is to replace the drive board |
| Ed 63 / Ed 64 | Commercial front-load drive board errors: Ed 63 fatal IPM temperature short error and Ed 64 fatal IPM temperature open error - the drive's power-module temperature sensing has failed short or open | Hardware failure in the drive board's temperature sensing circuit | Unpower to clear; if the error persists the manual's remedy is to replace the drive board |
| En 3F | Commercial front-load: the machine control cannot communicate with the Machine ID Control | A communication failure between the control and the Machine ID Control - connection, harness or the chip/control itself | Try cycling power; if it continues, check for damage to the Machine ID Control and harness, or replace the control/chip with a correctly configured one |
| En 31 | Commercial front-load Machine ID mismatch, product byte #1: the product family does not match between the Machine ID Control and the Front End Control | A Machine ID Control configured for a different product family fitted or connected to this front-end control | Replace the Machine ID Control with one meant for the current front-end control platform - control configuration is technician work |
| En 32 | Commercial front-load Machine ID mismatch, product byte #2: the machine type does not match between the Machine ID Control and the Front End Control (front-load washer vs dryer) | A Machine ID Control or front-end control meant for the other machine type | Replace the Machine ID Control and/or front-end control with one meant for the current machine type |
| En 33 | Commercial front-load Machine ID mismatch, product byte #3: the control level does not match between the Machine ID Control and the Front End Control (for example A4 vs A2) | A Machine ID Control configured at the wrong control level for the front-end control attached | Replace the Machine ID Control with a properly configured A level for the control being attached; the factory test procedure determines the front-end control's level |
| En 39 | Commercial front-load corrupted data on the Machine ID Control | Corrupted configuration data, or damage to the Machine ID Control or its harness | Try cycling power to the machine; if the error continues, check the Machine ID Control and harness for damage and replace the control with a correctly configured one if needed |
| EnF | Commercial top-load no water flow error: the control did not detect a water level of 0.5 inch within the programmed amount of time | If the machine is filling, the pressure sensor hose may have cracks or leaks; if it is not filling, the cause sits in the fill system covered by the fill error checks | Check the pressure sensor hose and replace it if cracked or leaking; if no water is entering at all, work through the fill error checks (faucets, hoses, screens) |
| Er, Co | Commercial top-load SCI communication error (Er, Co): the front-end control and the output board cannot communicate | A break or disconnect in the main harness between the two controls, loose or burnt pins in the connectors, or disconnections in the harness | Check the connectors for burnt or loose pins and the harness for disconnections; the machine must be powered down to clear this error |
| Er, FL | Residential fill error: the washer has not reached the fill level after 30 minutes during a wash or rinse fill | Hot or cold faucet turned off, fill hoses kinked or twisted, or the screens in the water mixing valve and at the faucet end of the fill hoses clogged | Turn both faucets on, straighten the hoses and clean both sets of screens, then unplug the machine for 15 seconds to clear the code |
| Er, LE | Commercial front-load water leak drain error (shown as E Ld or Er, LE): a leak was detected during the cycle's water leak detection step, when that check is programmed on | The water level dropped more than the acceptable amount during the leak check - a leaking drain hose, or a stuck gravity drain valve on gravity-drain machines | The error displays for 1 minute after the door opens at end of cycle and the cycle itself continues; find the leak - the lit right-most decimal point clears with START pressed 3 times in 5 seconds or by cycling power |
| Er, LF | Commercial water leak fill error (E LF / Er, LF): a leak was detected on the fill side during water leak detection | The water level rose more than the acceptable amount during the leak check - a water valve stuck open due to debris, or a failed water valve | Check the water valve for debris holding it open and for leaks past the valve seats; on washer-extractors power the machine down to clear |
| Er, OF | Residential overflow error: the washer has filled to the overflow level | Water level risen to the overflow point; on front-load models the pump foreign object trap may also be clogged, slowing the pump-out | The machine tries to pump water out if the door/lid is closed and locked; clean the foreign object trap (front-load) - if the code does not clear, unplug the machine and call for service |
| Er, PS | Residential pressure-sensor error: the control has detected trouble sensing the water fill level | A water-level (pressure) sensing fault - the manual gives no owner-side cause beyond the sensing failure itself | Speed Queen's manual instruction is direct: unplug the machine and call for service - this code is not cleared by an owner check |
| Er, SL | Residential oversudsing error: displayed after a cycle for one minute, or until the Power/Cancel keypad is pressed, to indicate an oversudsing condition | Too much detergent, non-HE detergent at full dose, or an overloaded load foaming over | Use low-sudsing HE detergent; if using non-HE detergent, use only half the manufacturer's recommended amount, and use proper load sizes |
| Er, dL / Er, dl | Residential door-lock pair, told apart only by letter case: Er, dL = the door has unlocked during a running cycle (fatal); Er, dl = the door has not locked at all | For dL, a lock or latch that let go mid-cycle; for dl, a door not closed all the way, a damaged lock or latch, or a disconnected lock harness | For dl, close the door all the way and try to start again, or open the door / unplug to clear; for dL, unplug to clear - a repeat of either is door lock, latch and harness service work |
| Er, dU | Residential: the control senses that the door (front-load) or lid (top-load) will not unlock | A lock that has not released at the end of the cycle; on commercial solenoid locks, load pressure on the door/latch or broken shocks can hold it shut | Unplug the machine for three minutes to unlock the door/lid; if the code appears again, call for service |
| Er, do | Residential front-load: the control senses that the door is open during a running cycle | Door pulled or not fully latched while the cycle is running, or an inoperative door locking system or door switch | Close the door fully; Speed Queen's manual clears this code by unplugging the machine - if it returns with the door shut, the door lock/switch needs service |
| Er, dr | Drain error (the 'er dr' reading owners search for): water is still in the washer at the end of the cycle, on residential front-load and top-load controls | Drain hose or drain receptacle installed wrongly or blocked, or the foreign object trap in the pump clogged (front-load) | Check the drain hose and receptacle for blockage, clean the pump foreign object trap on front-load models, then unplug the machine for 15 seconds to clear the code |
| Er, ub | Residential unbalanced-load error: the wash load was unbalanced and may have limited the spin speed; stacked/front-load manuals give the fuller form - the washer did not reach the maximum intended speed in the final spin (also shown as a left decimal point blinking one second on, one second off) | An unbalanced load, excessive suds in the load, or too much water left in the tub due to slow draining | Use proper load sizes evenly distributed in the basket and HE detergent; open the door or press the Power/Cancel keypad to clear the code, then redistribute and re-spin |
| OF, St | Top-load overflow prompt (residential top-load controls): the washtub has filled to the overflow level and the machine is waiting for Start | Tub filled to overflow level; the control gives five minutes to respond before escalating | Press the Start/Pause button and the machine will spin to attempt to pump water out; if Start is not pressed within five minutes the display changes to Er, OF and the machine must be unplugged for 15 seconds to clear |
| PF | Power fail error: the control was in Delay Start mode when a power failure occurred, and the delayed start is cancelled (residential and commercial controls) | A power failure or the machine being unplugged during Delay Start mode; no machine fault and no service needed | Press the Power/Cancel pad to clear the code and continue normal operation; re-select the cycle and delay if still wanted |
| Sr | Residential suds-removal status, not a fault: the control has detected an oversudsing condition and is running a special routine to remove the excess suds (shown with the cycle time remaining) | Oversudsing load - too much or non-HE detergent for the load size | Let the routine finish; afterwards follow the Er, SL detergent guidance - HE detergent at the labelled dose, half dose for non-HE |
| door | Commercial door open indicator (door or dor): the door is not closed during an active cycle - an indicator reading, shown on dryer-style and washer-extractor tables as well as front-load controls | The door genuinely open, or - if the door is closed - improper wiring or inoperative door switches | Close the door; if it shows with the door closed, the door switches and their wiring are the manual's checks |
| nF | No-fill error, displayed as Er, nF on residential controls: the washer has not filled to the proper water level | No or very little change in water level has been sensed within 5 minutes of the current fill - faucets off, hoses kinked or twisted, or inlet screens clogged | Make sure both hot and cold faucets are on, straighten the fill hoses and clean the mixing-valve and hose-end screens, then unplug for 15 seconds to clear |
| oFF | Commercial break-in alarm shutdown error (OFF or oFF): the machine has shut down on a break-in alarm | An access panel or coin vault switch opened with the break-in alarm enabled | Service the service door or coin vault switches before returning the machine to service |
| tP / tP, St | Residential top-load motor overload display: if the motor overload protector has stopped the cycle the control displays tP; it resets itself and then shows tP, St | Motor thermal protector open, possibly from an overloaded washtub; commercial top-load tables add a failing motor, or brake/transmission trouble | Review proper load sizes, let the protector reset, then press the Start/Pause button to resume the cycle when tP, St shows; a repeat on correct loads is service work |
How to reset / clear error codes on Speed Queen washers
Speed Queen codes clear by cancelling the cycle and power-cycling the control; on coin/commercial controls, some faults need the service mode to clear the stored error after the cause is fixed.
How to diagnose any Speed Queen washer code
Work the problem in this order: (1) write the code down exactly as displayed — photograph it, because opening the door or pressing pause can clear it; (2) ask what the machine was doing when the code appeared — filling, washing, draining, spinning or heating points straight at the fault family; (3) run the external checks for that family first: taps and inlet screens for fill codes, the pump filter and drain hose for drain codes, load size and levelling for balance codes, the door seal and latch for lock codes — these cure the majority of washer codes without a single part; (4) clear the code and run the shortest cycle that exercises the same function (a rinse-and-spin for drain faults, a small wash for fill faults) while you watch — a code that returns in the same phase is an active fault, not a glitch; (5) only then test or replace the component the code monitors, and re-test under the same conditions that produced the fault. Skipping to step 5 is how good parts get replaced for a clogged filter.
Two display languages in one brand: residential 'Er,' readings and commercial 'E' readings
Speed Queen is a commercial laundry company that also sells home machines, and its washers speak two related but different code languages depending on which world the control was built for. Residential machines - the FF-series front-loaders and the digital TR-series top-loaders whose tables anchor the top of this page - show two-part readings in the form 'Er, dr' or 'Er, nF': the Er simply announces an error, and the two letters after the comma name the fault in near-plain text (dr drain, FL fill, nF no fill, OF overflow, PS pressure sensor, ub unbalanced, SL suds lock). The owner's manual for those machines lists only about a dozen such readings, gives a plain-language cause and an owner-level remedy for each, and clears most of them the same way: fix the cause, unplug the machine for 15 seconds, and restart (three minutes unplugged for the door-will-not-unlock code, Er, dU). Commercial controls - Quantum-type front-load and top-load controls in laundromats and on-premise laundries, and the washer-extractor controls in the Alliance service tables - drop the comma and the 'r' and print 'E dr', 'E FL' or 'E:dL' instead, and their lists run to dozens of entries because they also report heater, thermistor, coin, card-reader, infra-red programming and drive-board faults that a home machine never has. The same fault family usually exists in both languages, but the details do not always travel: a residential Er, FL is a fill that missed its level in 30 minutes, while a commercial E FL is a programmed water level not reached within a programmed time that the washer-extractor table gives as 5 to 90 minutes. Read the table rows on this page by scope - each row states which control family it belongs to - and treat your own model's manual or programming table as the final authority for timing and remedy, because Speed Queen has reused the same two letters across control generations for decades.
The readings owners actually search for: 'er dr', 'e d co' and the Ed numbers
Three of the most-searched Speed Queen readings are not three codes, and this page treats them honestly rather than inventing meanings for them. First, 'er dr' is a real, documented code: it is the residential drain error, Er, dr - water still in the washer at the end of the cycle - and owners type it in the order the display flashes it, letters reversed, which is why it appears in search data as its own phrase; the commercial controls print the same fault as E dr, a drain alarm. Second, there is no code spelled 'e d co' in any Speed Queen or Alliance document checked for this page, and we do not publish one: the letters are the spaced-out pieces of two real readings - E Co (front-load) and Er, Co (top-load), the drive-board and output-board communication errors - sitting next to the Ed drive-board family in the same service tables, so a display or a forum post that separates the letters produces 'e d co' without it ever being a code of its own. Third, a bare 'Ed' is also not a complete code: on commercial front-load controls Ed introduces a numbered drive-board fault list (Ed 10 voltage select, Ed 21 over-voltage DC bus, Ed 29 motor not connected, and so on up to Ed 64), while washer-extractor drive tables use Ed01 to Ed11 with different meanings for the same numbers, and top-load tables print a generic Ed, XX for any error received from the output board. That split is exactly why third-party answers for 'Ed' contradict each other - one site's Ed answer is a lid or door story, another's is an imbalance story, a third's is a motor story - because each copied a fragment of a numbered table without its number or its control family. What identifies the fault is the pair: the number after Ed, plus the model number of the machine showing it. Note both down (a phone photo of the display beats a remembered reading, because these displays alternate and cycle) before searching or calling for service, and match them against the Ed rows in the table above, which are scoped to the front-load drive-board family they came from.
Where the big commercial lists come from - and which parts of them a homeowner will never see
Most of the length of this hub's table comes from commercial documentation, and it is worth knowing why those lists are so much longer than the dozen readings in a home machine's manual, so the extra rows are read in context rather than as faults your home washer might develop. A commercial Speed Queen control supervises things a residential control does not have: a heater and its thermistor on equipped models (E Ht, E oP, E SH, E tE, E Hd and E StHt), a coin drop or card reader taking payment (E rr for an invalid coin pulse, and a whole EC card-reader family in the programming tables), an infra-red port through which a technician or route operator programs prices and cycles with an external device (the EI family - EI01 transmission failure, EI03 invalid command, EI05 invalid or out-of-range data, EI0F infra-red disabled - all link faults, corrected by re-aiming the device or fixing the data, never by repairing the wash mechanism), and a Machine ID chip that tells the front-end control what machine it is bolted to (the En 31, En 32, En 33, En 39 and En 3F mismatch and communication errors, which appear when a control or chip from the wrong machine type or control level is fitted during a repair). Washer-extractors - the rigid and soft-mount machines in larger laundries - add their own Ripon-made table with balance-switch, rotation-sensor and pressure-switch entries (E db, E FS, E ro, E Pr) alongside the shared drain, fill and unbalance families. Two display habits cross all of these families and confuse owners of every type: some non-fatal errors (slow drain, leak detection, suds lock, heater faults) are deliberately shown only briefly - for one minute after the door is opened at the end of the cycle, or for 15 seconds during it - and then leave only a lit right-most decimal point as evidence, cleared by pressing START three times in five seconds or by cycling power; and the fatal/non-fatal split matters, because a non-fatal door or unbalance error clears when the condition clears, while a fatal one needs the machine unpowered before it will run again. If your machine is a home model and its display shows a reading from the commercial half of this table, do not diagnose it from that row: home and commercial controls were programmed separately, the model number decides which list is yours, and on a home machine an unfamiliar reading that survives the manual's 15-second unplug reset is a service call, with the photographed display and the model number ready to quote.
Less common and model-specific codes
Search data shows owners also meet these codes on Speed Queen washers: Washer. They are not part of the core code list Speed Queen publishes for most models — several are series-specific, abbreviated display readings, or codes carried over from a sister platform — so we do not publish meanings for them rather than guess. Treat them by symptom: note what the machine was doing when the code appeared (filling, draining, heating, spinning), run one full power cycle (5 minutes off), and if the code returns, match the symptom to the closest documented family in the table above and check the tech sheet stored inside your machine for the model-specific definition.
Frequently asked questions
How to fix error code on speed queen washer?
Start with the table above: find your code, run its first fix (usually a no-tool check — supply, filter, hose or load), then clear the code and run a short test cycle. If the same code returns, work through the cause list for that code before replacing parts.
