Samsung Washer UR Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix
Unbalanced load, retrying — the washer is still trying to redistribute the load before spin.
UR is a status as much as a fault: the washer has detected an unbalanced load and is actively tumbling and retrying to balance it before spin. If it succeeds, UR disappears and the cycle finishes. If it cannot balance after repeated attempts, the machine gives up and shows UB/UE instead. UR appears most with single heavy items and on top-loaders whose suspension is getting tired. UR is unusual among washer displays in that Samsung documents it as a status announcement rather than a fault. Its Caribbean support page defines it in one breath — the load is unbalanced, the washer will add more water, try to balance the load, and try the spin again — and then dismantles the assumption owners bring to it: this code does not mean there is an issue with your washer; it is just there to tell you what is happening. That framing explains UR's puzzles: the cycle time extends because the washer is doing extra work, not because it is stuck; the tub refills at a stage that should be draining because added water is the tool the washer uses to float a clumped load apart; and the code vanishes without any reset because nothing was ever latched as broken. UB and UE, which share UR's territory, are the genuine failure reports in Samsung's structure — the retry exhausted, the cycle surrendered — and telling the attempt from the surrender is most of what there is to know about this code.
What causes the UR code on a Samsung washer?
Dense single item
Waterlogged blankets, mats and comforters clump to one side.
Mixed load with one heavy piece
The heavy item wraps the rest around it.
Early suspension wear
The machine needs more retries than it used to for the same loads.
A single heavy item washing alone
Samsung's balance guidance returns to this example repeatedly: if you wash only one item of clothing, such as a bathrobe or a pair of jeans, the final spin result may be unsatisfactory and a balance code will show. A lone bathrobe is the extreme case — it absorbs many times its dry weight in water, collapses into one dense mass, and gives the washer nothing to arrange around the opposite side of the drum. UR is the washer reporting, in real time, that it is trying to solve exactly that geometry and has not solved it yet.
Tangled laundry that has wound itself into one mass
Samsung's Hong Kong and Malaysia UE pages open with the same instruction for a reason: loosen any tangled laundry. Sheets wrap smaller items into a single ball, long items braid themselves around the agitator or drum, and the resulting mass behaves like the single-item case even though the load began as ten separate pieces. UR appearing part-way through a cycle that started normally often marks the moment the load finished tangling itself, which is why redistributing by hand — physically unwinding the ball — works when simply restarting does not.
A load tilted to one side of the tub
Samsung's suddenly-stops guidance describes the balance remedy as moving the load around when it is tilted to one side in the barrel, and that tilt is a distinct cause from tangling: the items may be separate and untangled but simply piled where they landed, all on one side, when the spin was attempted. Top-loaders show this most plainly because you can see the pile from above; the washer's response is the same either way — add water, move the load, and try the spin again, with UR on the display while it does so.
Checks to run before you replace anything
- Wait through a couple of retry cycles — UR often resolves itself.
- If it persists, open and redistribute manually; add a towel or two to single-item loads.
- Level-check the machine if UR is new and frequent.
- Give the retry a chance to succeed before intervening: Samsung's Caribbean support page is explicit that a Ur code means the washer is going to add more water, try to balance the load, and then try the spin cycle again, and that a Ur code does not mean there is an issue with your washer. Opening the lid at the first sight of UR interrupts a correction the machine was already making; watch through at least one full add-water, redistribute, respin sequence first.
- Budget for the clock to grow while UR is displayed: Samsung states that the retry behaviour will extend the length of the cycle. A cycle that seems to be going backwards in time — minutes reappearing after the spin should have finished — is the documented cost of the washer rebalancing itself, and on its own it is not evidence of a second fault hiding behind the first.
- Distinguish UR from the codes that end the argument: Samsung's spin guidance sets Ur apart from all the other codes in its section, which indicate the washer will fail to complete the cycle because the load is unbalanced. UR is the attempt; UB and UE are the surrender. Reading which of those is actually on your display tells you whether to wait, to redistribute, or to accept the cycle has stopped — three different responses to three displays owners routinely merge.
How to fix samsung washer ur code?
- Redistribute the load and let the cycle continue.
- Wash bulky items with balancing companions; avoid single-item loads.
- If UR escalates to UB on most loads, treat it as suspension wear (see UB fix path).
- Redistribute by hand the way Samsung directs when the retry is not enough: pause the appliance, move the load around in the drum to balance it out, and let the cycle continue. Spread the mass around the drum's perimeter rather than merely flattening its top — the washer judges weight distribution, not neatness, and a flat-topped pile that is all on one side will fail the next spin exactly as the untidy one did.
- Add ballast to a load that is too small to balance: Samsung's guidance for the balance family is to add one or two towels to the drum when the load is too small, and then start the Rinse and Spin cycle. The towels are not padding; they are the movable weight the washer needs on the empty side of the drum, which is why this remedy works for the single bathrobe or jeans load that no amount of rearranging could fix on its own.
- Untangle before you rebalance a wound-up load: pull the balled mass apart into separate items, shake out the sheet or duvet cover that swallowed the rest, and reload the pieces loosely around the drum. Restarting a still-tangled load just returns the machine to the same UR loop, because you have changed the load's position without changing the single-mass property that defeated the spin in the first place.
The part that usually fails: Suspension rods (when UR→UB is frequent)
The bounce test (press empty tub down; it should rebound once) tells you if damping is gone.
How to reset / clear the UR code
No reset needed — UR clears when the load balances. If the display freezes on UR with no drum movement, power-cycle once.
On Samsung washers most fault codes clear with a power reset: switch the machine off, unplug it (or trip the breaker) for at least 5 minutes so the control board fully discharges, then restore power and run a short Rinse+Spin or a small test load. If the code was caused by a one-off condition — a kinked hose, an unbalanced load, a suds spike — it will not come back. If it returns on the next cycle, the control has detected the same fault again and the reset has only cleared the message, not the cause. Samsung does not use a button-combination 'master reset' on most models; the power cycle is the reset.
Why does the UR code keep coming back?
UR showing up more often month over month is the earliest warning of suspension wear — long before it becomes a hard UB fault. UR earns a second look only when its frequency changes. A washer that shows UR on the occasional blanket load is doing documented work; one that shows it on most loads, including small and well-spread ones, is describing a slow change in itself or its situation — a floor that has begun to flex, feet settled out of level, suspension that no longer damps the tub's travel, or, on a newly installed machine, shipping material never removed, which Samsung's balance troubleshooting has you check. Test it with an ordinary mixed load, spread evenly: if that also retries repeatedly and escalates toward UB, the laundry is acquitted and the machine or its installation is the remaining story — the point where Samsung's guidance stops being about loads and ends at service.
How to stop UR coming back
- Dense single item: Waterlogged blankets, mats and comforters clump to one side.
- Mixed load with one heavy piece: The heavy item wraps the rest around it.
- Early suspension wear: The machine needs more retries than it used to for the same loads.
Retrieving stored fault codes on Samsung washers
Most Samsung washers store recent fault codes that a technician can read in the service/diagnostic mode. Entry varies by model family: on many front-loaders you press and hold Delay End and Pre Soak (or Temp and Spin, on older models) together for about 3 seconds until the display lights all segments; on top-loaders a similar two-button hold (often Delay End + Pre Soak) is used. Once inside, the cycle knob steps through stored codes and component tests (fill, drain, motor, heater). Because the button pair differs between model years, confirm the pair for your exact model in the tech sheet fixed inside the machine or in the user manual before relying on a code you read there.
Other Samsung washer error codes
| Code | Meaning | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1C | Water level sensor is not working properly. | Turn machine off and restart the cycle; if it remains, contact Samsung service. |
| 1DC4 | FlexWash door error; rubber button by upper washer latch is missing. | Replace the rubber button; Samsung says service is not required for this code. |
| 1E | Water level or leakage error; moisture detected or sensor issue. | Check for leaks and kinked hoses; run an empty cycle; request service if it returns. |
| 3C | Motor error — the washer's drive motor is not running correctly (motor drive/PCB communication family). | Remove the jam: check the filter, the door seal folds and (front-load) the gap between drum and gasket for trapped items. |
| 3E | Motor error; older display variant of the 3C motor family. | Power off for 2-3 minutes and restart; if it persists, contact Samsung service. |
| 4C | Water supply error — the washer is not filling with water (or is filling too slowly). | Clear the inlet screens (above) — this alone fixes the majority of 4C cases. |
| 4C2 | Hot/cold error; cold supply water is extremely hot because hoses are swapped. | Connect cold supply to cold inlet and hot to hot, blue to blue, red to red. |
| 4E | Water supply error — the washer is not filling (older-display version of 4C). | Clean the inlet screens and restore full tap flow — the majority of 4E cases end here. |
| 5C | Drain error — the washer is not draining water out of the tub. | Clean the debris filter and refit it snugly — a filter not fully seated can also leak, so run a short drain/spin and watch for drips. |
| 5E | Drain error; 5E is the older display variant of 5C. | Clean the debris filter and check the drain hose and waste connection for blockages. |
| 8C | MEMS (vibration) sensor error. | Power off for a few minutes and restart; if it remains, contact Samsung service. |
| 8E | MEMS/vibration sensor error on most models; check your manual. | Power off for a few minutes and restart; if it remains, contact Samsung service. |
| 9C1 | Voltage error; irregular electrical supply detected. | Use the washer's own circuit with no extension cord; restart; request service if it continues. |
| 9C2 | Voltage error; irregular electrical supply detected. | Use the washer's own circuit with no extension cord; restart; request service if it continues. |

Codes UR gets confused with
OE — Overflow error — the washer has detected a water level that is too high. OE means the level sensor is reporting more water than the cycle should have — either the tub genuinely overfilled, or the sensor is lying.
DC — Door error on some Samsung models, unbalanced load error on others — Samsung publishes DC in both families, and the model's own manual decides which meaning applies. DC is the Samsung washer code with two documented meanings, and Samsung says so itself: its washer information-code page lists dC in the door-error group ('the door is not detected as closed and locked') and dc again in the unbalanced-load group, each time carrying the note 'On some models, dC is a Door Error.
SE — No drain — the washer is not draining (Samsung lists SE in its nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC no-drain family). It is not a sensor error on washers. SE is a spelling Samsung itself prints for its washer no-drain fault: Samsung's US/Caribbean washer information page groups the family as 'nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC, 1 5C: No drain error — water is not draining from the washer at the correct speed (or at all)', and its published fix sequence is to turn the washer off and check the level, inspect the drain hose, clean the pump filter (front loaders only), then turn the washer back on and start a cycle.
NF — No Fill — the washer is not filling with water (one spelling of Samsung's not-filling family). NF is one display spelling of Samsung's not-filling fault — the same water-supply problem other models report as 4C/4E.

Frequently asked questions
Does UR mean something is broken?
Not usually — it means the machine is retrying to balance. It becomes a repair topic only when it happens on most ordinary loads.
What Does Error Code Ur on Samsung Washer Mean?
UR stands for Unbalanced Load Retry, in Samsung's own words: the current load in the washer is unbalanced inside the tub, and the washer is going to try to add more water, try to balance the load, and then try the spin cycle again. Samsung states plainly that a Ur code does not mean there is an issue with your washer — it is the machine telling you what it is doing, and the visible cost is that the cycle takes longer than the display first promised.
How to Fix Ur Error Code Samsung Washer?
Often the fix is to let the washer finish fixing it: UR is a retry in progress, so watch one full sequence of added water, rebalancing and respin before intervening. If it cannot settle, pause the appliance and move the load around to balance it, as Samsung directs; if the load is too small — one bathrobe or a pair of jeans washing alone — add one or two towels and start the Rinse and Spin cycle, which is Samsung's published remedy for that case.
Is UR the Same as UB or UE on a Samsung Washer?
No, and Samsung's spin guidance separates them deliberately. UR is the retry: the washer is actively adding water, rebalancing the load and attempting the spin again, and the cycle continues. The other codes in Samsung's unbalanced-load section — the UB and UE family — indicate the washer will fail to complete the cycle because the load is unbalanced. UR is therefore the display to wait through, while UB or UE are the displays that ask you to open the machine and correct the load yourself.
How to fix samsung washer ur code?
Start here: Redistribute the load and let the cycle continue. Wash bulky items with balancing companions; avoid single-item loads.
What does error code ur on samsung washer?
Unbalanced load, retrying — the washer is still trying to redistribute the load before spin. UR is a status as much as a fault: the washer has detected an unbalanced load and is actively tumbling and retrying to balance it before spin.
