Samsung Washer U6 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Samsung Washer display showing U6 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Unbalance-related fault reported on some Samsung washer displays (balance/vibration family).

U6 shows up on a subset of Samsung washers in the same situation as the better-known UB/UE codes: the control is unhappy with the tub's balance or vibration during spin. On the platforms that use it, U6 is associated with the machine detecting an unbalanced condition it could not correct — or, on models with a dedicated vibration sensor, a vibration reading outside limits. Either way the working diagnosis is the UB playbook: load distribution, levelling, and suspension condition.

Applies to: A subset of Samsung top-load and front-load models; most Samsung displays show the same conditions as UB/UE/UR instead.
Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug the washer before removing any panel. You are working around water lines and mains voltage at the inlet valve and drain pump; shut the water taps off before disconnecting hoses, and keep towels ready — a washer that stopped mid-cycle can hold several gallons of water.

What causes the U6 code on a Samsung washer?

Clumped or single-item load

The classic trigger — dense wet items bunched to one side.

Machine not level or a foot off the floor

Amplifies vibration readings dramatically.

Worn suspension

Top-load rods or front-load dampers losing their damping, so borderline loads now trip the code.

Vibration sensor fault (where fitted)

A failed or loose vibration sensor reports phantom imbalance.

Calibration never run after installation or a move

Samsung washers detect the weight of the laundry automatically, and that detection feeds the balancing behaviour. Samsung recommends performing calibration and levelling after installation, and running Calibration Mode again if the weight-detection value has changed. A machine that was moved, re-levelled, or had its feet adjusted but was never recalibrated can keep judging loads against a stale baseline, so U6 appears on loads that balanced perfectly before the move.

Shipping bolts still fitted on a new front-loader

Samsung's levelling guide puts removing the shipping bolts (front-load models) at the top of its preparation list, before levelling is even attempted. The bolts lock the tub solid for transport, so a machine run with them still in cannot float on its suspension at all: vibration is extreme from the first spin, the sensor reads it honestly, and U6 shows on every load including tiny ones.

Machine wedged against cabinets or walls

Samsung's levelling guidance also requires the washer not to touch any other objects, with at least 10 cm of clearance around the sides and back. A machine pushed tight into a run of cabinets, or with hoses and stored items pressed against it, transmits its vibration into the furniture instead of absorbing it, and a vibration-sensing model reads that amplified shaking as a load it cannot balance.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Redistribute the load and retry spin; note whether U6 appears only with particular loads.
  2. Rock-test the machine's corners and level the feet.
  3. Bounce-test the empty tub: press down and release — one rebound is healthy, repeated bouncing is worn suspension.
  4. Run the empty-drum discrimination test: start a spin with nothing in the drum. U6 with an empty drum cannot be a laundry problem - it points at calibration, sensor mounting, shipping bolts, or the machine's position, so stop rearranging clothes and check those instead.
  5. Look at the back of a recently delivered front-loader for shipping bolts still in place, or for open bolt holes with their covers never fitted - either finding explains U6 from day one.
  6. Check Samsung's clearance rule around the machine: at least 10 cm at the sides and back, nothing touching the cabinet, and no hose or power lead pulling the machine off square in its space.
  7. Note where in the spin U6 strikes: a code that appears as the drum first ramps up suggests a load or baseline problem, while violent shaking from the very start of rotation suggests the tub is physically locked down (bolts) or the machine is fouling something.

How to fix u6 error code samsung washer?

  1. Rebalance loads; add towels to single heavy items; avoid washing one dense item alone.
  2. Level the machine on a solid floor (a flexing floor can itself cause repeat balance faults).
  3. Replace suspension rods (set) or dampers if the bounce test fails.
  4. If U6 appears with an empty drum and a level machine, have the vibration sensor and its mounting checked.
  5. Run Calibration Mode the Samsung way for most front-load panels: empty the tub, power off and on, hold Temp. and Delay End (+) together for 3 seconds until Cb shows, then press Start/Pause - the drum rotates in both directions for a few minutes and the machine switches itself off at 0 or End. The button combination varies by model, so confirm it in your manual first, and run calibration after every installation, move, or re-levelling.
  6. Remove any shipping bolts completely, fit the supplied hole covers, and keep the bolts safe - they should be refitted before the machine is ever transported again. Re-level the machine afterwards, because it will now sit differently.
  7. Pull the machine forward, reposition it with its clearance on all sides, level it in its final spot, and finish with a fresh calibration run in that exact position.

The part that usually fails: Suspension rods/dampers; vibration sensor where fitted

Suspension wear is the usual story when U6 becomes frequent; the bounce test is the quick field check.

How to reset / clear the U6 code

Clears when a spin completes in balance. No special reset; a power cycle clears a frozen display.

On Samsung washers most fault codes clear with a power reset: switch the machine off, unplug it (or trip the breaker) for at least 5 minutes so the control board fully discharges, then restore power and run a short Rinse+Spin or a small test load. If the code was caused by a one-off condition — a kinked hose, an unbalanced load, a suds spike — it will not come back. If it returns on the next cycle, the control has detected the same fault again and the reset has only cleared the message, not the cause. Samsung does not use a button-combination 'master reset' on most models; the power cycle is the reset.

Why does the U6 code keep coming back?

Increasing frequency on ordinary loads = suspension wear. U6 on an empty drum = sensor or mounting problem rather than load.

Can you still use the washer with U6 showing? Finish loads at lower spin speed while you fix the cause; don't keep forcing maximum-speed spins.

How to stop U6 coming back

When to call a pro. If the tub bangs the cabinet or sits visibly off-centre, stop — that is beyond load management and needs a technician's look at suspension/counterweight.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Samsung washers

Most Samsung washers store recent fault codes that a technician can read in the service/diagnostic mode. Entry varies by model family: on many front-loaders you press and hold Delay End and Pre Soak (or Temp and Spin, on older models) together for about 3 seconds until the display lights all segments; on top-loaders a similar two-button hold (often Delay End + Pre Soak) is used. Once inside, the cycle knob steps through stored codes and component tests (fill, drain, motor, heater). Because the button pair differs between model years, confirm the pair for your exact model in the tech sheet fixed inside the machine or in the user manual before relying on a code you read there.

Other Samsung washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
1CWater level sensor is not working properly.Turn machine off and restart the cycle; if it remains, contact Samsung service.
1DC4FlexWash door error; rubber button by upper washer latch is missing.Replace the rubber button; Samsung says service is not required for this code.
1EWater level or leakage error; moisture detected or sensor issue.Check for leaks and kinked hoses; run an empty cycle; request service if it returns.
3CMotor error — the washer's drive motor is not running correctly (motor drive/PCB communication family).Remove the jam: check the filter, the door seal folds and (front-load) the gap between drum and gasket for trapped items.
3EMotor error; older display variant of the 3C motor family.Power off for 2-3 minutes and restart; if it persists, contact Samsung service.
4CWater supply error — the washer is not filling with water (or is filling too slowly).Clear the inlet screens (above) — this alone fixes the majority of 4C cases.
4C2Hot/cold error; cold supply water is extremely hot because hoses are swapped.Connect cold supply to cold inlet and hot to hot, blue to blue, red to red.
4EWater supply error — the washer is not filling (older-display version of 4C).Clean the inlet screens and restore full tap flow — the majority of 4E cases end here.
5CDrain error — the washer is not draining water out of the tub.Clean the debris filter and refit it snugly — a filter not fully seated can also leak, so run a short drain/spin and watch for drips.
5EDrain error; 5E is the older display variant of 5C.Clean the debris filter and check the drain hose and waste connection for blockages.
8CMEMS (vibration) sensor error.Power off for a few minutes and restart; if it remains, contact Samsung service.
8EMEMS/vibration sensor error on most models; check your manual.Power off for a few minutes and restart; if it remains, contact Samsung service.
9C1Voltage error; irregular electrical supply detected.Use the washer's own circuit with no extension cord; restart; request service if it continues.
9C2Voltage error; irregular electrical supply detected.Use the washer's own circuit with no extension cord; restart; request service if it continues.

Codes U6 gets confused with

UE — Unbalance error — the load could not be balanced for spin (older-display version of UB). UE is Samsung's unbalance code on older displays; current models show the same condition as UB.

9C8 — Voltage/power-supply related fault code reported on some Samsung washer platforms (9C family covers electrical supply and board power issues). The 9C code family on Samsung appliances covers electrical supply faults — abnormal supply voltage or a board power problem.

D5 — Display code reported on a limited set of Samsung washers — treat with care: Samsung does not publish one universal D5 definition across platforms. Unlike Samsung's well-documented codes, D5 is not part of the core published code list for most washer platforms, and harvest data shows it is searched far more than it is documented.

UB — Unbalanced load — the washer cannot distribute the load evenly enough to spin safely. UB means the washer tried to balance the load for spin and failed: the tub's load is clumped to one side, so spinning would make the machine shake violently or walk across the floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is U6 the same as UB?

It belongs to the same balance/vibration family and is fixed the same way; the exact letter varies by model generation.

What is Calibration Mode, and when should I run it?

Calibration Mode teaches the washer its own empty-drum baseline so its automatic weight detection stays accurate - Samsung says it helps the machine balance and improves performance. Samsung recommends running it after the washer is installed or moved; it normally takes 3 to 5 minutes depending on the model, and the tub must be empty while it runs.

Why has U6 appeared on every load since my washer was delivered or moved?

That timing points at installation, not laundry: the three checks are shipping bolts still fitted (front-loaders), the machine not level in its new spot, and calibration never having been run in the new position. Samsung pairs calibration with levelling after installation for exactly this reason - work through all three before suspecting a faulty sensor.

Can U6 be wrong - can it show when nothing is actually unbalanced?

It can show when the vibration reading is real but the cause is not the laundry: a sensor working against an uncalibrated baseline, a machine touching cabinetry, or a loose sensor mounting can all produce readings outside limits on a balanced load. The empty-drum spin test separates the cases - if U6 fires empty, treat it as a machine or sensor issue, not a loading issue.
