Samsung Washer SUD Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Samsung Washer display showing SUD — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Excess suds detected — the washer has found too much foam in the tub.

SUD (also shown as Sd on some displays) is not a broken part: the washer's sensors have detected oversudsing — too much foam for the machine to wash and drain safely. The machine pauses, runs a suds-reduction routine (adding time, sometimes draining and refilling), and only continues when the foam level falls. The cause is almost always detergent: too much of it, or a non-HE detergent in a high-efficiency machine. SUD repays being read as a measurement rather than an error. The washer is, in effect, weighing the foam in its tub and reporting that the balance between detergent, water volume and soil has tipped too far toward foam. Samsung's own materials keep returning to the same three levers, and only those three: the amount used, the type used, and the concentration of the product in the bottle. That is also why Samsung can state, on its Australian SUDS page, that the code is not an indication of a malfunction — the sensor that reports SUD is working correctly when it reports it, in the same way a scale is working when it reports a heavy load. The practical consequence: never answer SUD's first appearance with a part or a service call — the complete Samsung remedy set is patience while the suds dissipate, a rinse cycle, HE detergent, and a dose matched to the concentration you own.

Applies to: Samsung front-load and top-load HE washers; the same condition on Whirlpool-built machines shows as Sd/SUD as well.
Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug the washer before removing any panel. You are working around water lines and mains voltage at the inlet valve and drain pump; shut the water taps off before disconnecting hoses, and keep towels ready — a washer that stopped mid-cycle can hold several gallons of water.

What causes the SUD code on a Samsung washer?

Too much detergent

Modern HE machines need far less than most people pour — Samsung's guidance is the detergent maker's suggested amount for the load, and no more. 'A bit extra for dirty loads' is the classic trigger.

Non-HE (regular) detergent used

Regular detergent is formulated to make foam; in an HE machine's low water volume it foams excessively.

Detergent build-up in the tub

Months of overdosing leaves residue in the outer tub that re-foams every load, so SUD appears even on a 'normal' dose.

Very soft water

Soft water makes detergent foam more; homes with water softeners need the smallest doses of all.

Concentrated detergent dosed as though it were standard strength

Samsung's SUDS guidance calls this out directly: there are many different concentrations of laundry detergent — its examples are 1x, 2x and 3x — and you must reduce the amount you use accordingly. A capful measured by habit from an old standard bottle delivers two or three times the intended dose when the new bottle is a concentrate, and the washer's low water volume turns that surplus straight into foam. SUD that began the week a new detergent bottle arrived, with no other change in the household routine, is this cause until proven otherwise.

Hand-washing liquid or other non-laundry products entering the wash

Samsung's framing of the fault is improper detergent use in a broad sense: too much detergent, or the wrong type. The wrong-type branch includes products never formulated for a machine at all. Anything designed to foam in a sink of water will foam far harder in a washer drum, and because these products are dosed by eye rather than by a cap measure, the overdose is usually large. If SUD followed a load where a substitute product went in 'just this once', the machine is reporting that load accurately.

An automatic dispenser drawing more than the load needs

On Samsung models with automatic dispensing, the dose comes from stored settings rather than your hand, which moves the mistake upstream: a dispenser set for the wrong concentration, or set heavy for a household whose loads are mostly small, oversudses load after load with nobody over-pouring anything. Samsung's remedy — a small, proper amount of detergent — applies to the setting as much as to the capful, so a SUD pattern that survives careful hand-dosing should send you to the dispenser settings.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Look through the door: visible foam filling the window confirms the diagnosis instantly.
  2. Check the detergent bottle: is it HE? How much did you use?
  3. Note whether SUD appears near the start (dose problem) or has crept in over months (build-up).
  4. Watch what the machine actually does when SUDS shows, because Samsung describes the behaviour precisely: the washer has detected an over-sudsing condition and will stop for a short period to allow the suds to dissipate, after which the cycle should continue. A machine that pauses, lets the foam fall, and carries on is performing the documented response — it is evidence for the diagnosis, not a second fault.
  5. Read the detergent packaging against what was poured: confirm the product is marked HE, and then find its concentration, because Samsung's guidance ties the dose reduction directly to concentration levels such as 1x, 2x and 3x. A correct amount of the wrong concentration is still an overdose, and this check catches the case where hand-dosing feels careful.
  6. Check Samsung's own verdict before suspecting parts: its SUDS page states plainly that this error code is not an indication of a malfunction of your washing machine. That sentence is the check that matters most — it rules the machine itself out of the first round of suspicion and puts the detergent, its type, and its amount in the frame instead.
  7. Note where in the cycle SUD appears and what the load was: foam visible through the door glass early in the wash points at the dose in the drawer today, while SUD on a load washed by an auto-dispenser points at stored dispenser settings. The timing separates a one-off pouring mistake from a systematic dosing error that will repeat until the setting or the habit changes.

How to fix samsung washer that says sud?

  1. Let the machine finish its suds-reduction routine — do not force the door; it will drain and continue when foam falls.
  2. Run an empty hot wash (or the Self Clean cycle) with no detergent to strip residue from the tub.
  3. Cut the dose: switch to HE detergent and use the smallest marked dose; for soft water, use even less.
  4. If the dispenser drawer is gunked with old detergent, remove and wash it — residue there feeds foam into every load.
  5. Let the current cycle finish its own recovery first: Samsung's description is that the machine stops for a short period to let the suds dissipate and the cycle should then continue. Interrupting, forcing the door, or restarting the load from zero simply re-agitates the same foam and adds the drained detergent problem to the next attempt.
  6. Add a rinse cycle to clear what the foam leaves behind — this is Samsung UK's published solution for SUD in its information-code table, paired with using a small, proper amount of detergent. An extra rinse matters because suds hold detergent against the fabric; clothes that come out of an oversudsed wash without extra rinsing can feel stiff and carry residue into the next wear.
  7. Re-dose by the detergent maker's own measure for your product's concentration, not by the old bottle's habit: Samsung directs you to follow the detergent manufacturer's suggested amount and to reduce it for concentrated products. Then make the change permanent in whichever place your machine doses from — the cap you pour, the drawer line you fill to, or the auto-dispenser setting you store.
  8. Switch the product, not just the amount, if the bottle is not HE: Samsung recommends HE detergent, designed for high efficiency front loader machines with low sudsing properties, because non-HE detergent has high sudsing properties by design. No careful measuring of a high-foam product reliably prevents SUD in a low-water machine; the formulation itself is the fault.

The part that usually fails: No part usually fails

SUD is a condition report, not a component fault. Only if SUD appears with tiny, correct doses of HE detergent on a clean machine should the level/pressure sensor be suspected — it can misread foam as water level.

Samsung washer error code sud reset

SUD clears by itself when the foam level drops; a power cycle is rarely needed and does not fix the cause. If the display keeps returning, run the empty hot rinse described above.

On Samsung washers most fault codes clear with a power reset: switch the machine off, unplug it (or trip the breaker) for at least 5 minutes so the control board fully discharges, then restore power and run a short Rinse+Spin or a small test load. If the code was caused by a one-off condition — a kinked hose, an unbalanced load, a suds spike — it will not come back. If it returns on the next cycle, the control has detected the same fault again and the reset has only cleared the message, not the cause. Samsung does not use a button-combination 'master reset' on most models; the power cycle is the reset.

Why does the SUD code keep coming back?

If SUD keeps coming back, the tub has detergent build-up (run repeated empty hot cycles) or the household dose is still too high for the water softness. A musty smell and grey film on the door gasket are tell-tale build-up signs. SUD that keeps returning after the dose has honestly been cut usually means one of Samsung's three levers has not actually moved. The bottle may have changed concentration without the pour changing with it. The auto-dispenser, where fitted, may still store the old setting and dose every load the old way.

Can you still use the washer with SUD showing? Yes — you can let the cycle finish. The machine protects itself; the wash will just take longer, and clothes may need an extra rinse if they feel soapy.

How to stop SUD coming back

When to call a pro. Call a pro only if SUD appears with no detergent in an empty, cleaned machine — that points to a level sensor fault rather than foam.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Samsung washers

Most Samsung washers store recent fault codes that a technician can read in the service/diagnostic mode. Entry varies by model family: on many front-loaders you press and hold Delay End and Pre Soak (or Temp and Spin, on older models) together for about 3 seconds until the display lights all segments; on top-loaders a similar two-button hold (often Delay End + Pre Soak) is used. Once inside, the cycle knob steps through stored codes and component tests (fill, drain, motor, heater). Because the button pair differs between model years, confirm the pair for your exact model in the tech sheet fixed inside the machine or in the user manual before relying on a code you read there.

Other Samsung washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
1CWater level sensor is not working properly.Turn machine off and restart the cycle; if it remains, contact Samsung service.
1DC4FlexWash door error; rubber button by upper washer latch is missing.Replace the rubber button; Samsung says service is not required for this code.
1EWater level or leakage error; moisture detected or sensor issue.Check for leaks and kinked hoses; run an empty cycle; request service if it returns.
3CMotor error — the washer's drive motor is not running correctly (motor drive/PCB communication family).Remove the jam: check the filter, the door seal folds and (front-load) the gap between drum and gasket for trapped items.
3EMotor error; older display variant of the 3C motor family.Power off for 2-3 minutes and restart; if it persists, contact Samsung service.
4CWater supply error — the washer is not filling with water (or is filling too slowly).Clear the inlet screens (above) — this alone fixes the majority of 4C cases.
4C2Hot/cold error; cold supply water is extremely hot because hoses are swapped.Connect cold supply to cold inlet and hot to hot, blue to blue, red to red.
4EWater supply error — the washer is not filling (older-display version of 4C).Clean the inlet screens and restore full tap flow — the majority of 4E cases end here.
5CDrain error — the washer is not draining water out of the tub.Clean the debris filter and refit it snugly — a filter not fully seated can also leak, so run a short drain/spin and watch for drips.
5EDrain error; 5E is the older display variant of 5C.Clean the debris filter and check the drain hose and waste connection for blockages.
8CMEMS (vibration) sensor error.Power off for a few minutes and restart; if it remains, contact Samsung service.
8EMEMS/vibration sensor error on most models; check your manual.Power off for a few minutes and restart; if it remains, contact Samsung service.
9C1Voltage error; irregular electrical supply detected.Use the washer's own circuit with no extension cord; restart; request service if it continues.
9C2Voltage error; irregular electrical supply detected.Use the washer's own circuit with no extension cord; restart; request service if it continues.

Codes SUD gets confused with

OE — Overflow error — the washer has detected a water level that is too high. OE means the level sensor is reporting more water than the cycle should have — either the tub genuinely overfilled, or the sensor is lying.

5C — Drain error — the washer is not draining water out of the tub. 5C (shown as 5E on older Samsung displays, and as SC in some character sets) means the control ran the drain pump but the water level did not fall as expected.

UR — Unbalanced load, retrying — the washer is still trying to redistribute the load before spin. UR is a status as much as a fault: the washer has detected an unbalanced load and is actively tumbling and retrying to balance it before spin.

SE — No drain — the washer is not draining (Samsung lists SE in its nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC no-drain family). It is not a sensor error on washers. SE is a spelling Samsung itself prints for its washer no-drain fault: Samsung's US/Caribbean washer information page groups the family as 'nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC, 1 5C: No drain error — water is not draining from the washer at the correct speed (or at all)', and its published fix sequence is to turn the washer off and check the level, inspect the drain hose, clean the pump filter (front loaders only), then turn the washer back on and start a cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Does SUD mean my Samsung washer is broken?

No. It means the machine detected too much foam, usually from too much or non-HE detergent. Reduce the dose and run a cleaning cycle.

How much detergent should I use?

Follow the detergent manufacturer's suggested amount for your load size and soil level, and use HE detergent in a Samsung HE washer — Samsung's SUD guidance is that excess or non-HE detergent is the cause, so heavily soiled loads get the maker's large-load dose, not an extra pour.

What Does Samsung Washer Sud Mean?

SUD — displayed as SUDS on many models — means the washer has detected an over-sudsing condition: too many bubbles, caused by excessive detergent. Samsung's information-code table gives the meaning in exactly those terms and pairs it with two remedies, adding a rinse cycle to get rid of the bubbles and using a small, proper amount of detergent. Samsung also states that the code is not an indication of a malfunction of the washing machine.

Why Samsung Washer Says Sud?

Because the detergent situation, not the machine, has gone wrong: Samsung attributes SUDS to using detergent improperly — too much of it, or the wrong type. Its guidance adds the concentration trap explicitly: detergents come in strengths such as 1x, 2x and 3x, and the amount must be reduced accordingly, so a household can oversuds with a normal-looking capful simply by switching to a more concentrated bottle at the same pour.

How to Fix Samsung Washer That Says Sud?

Start by doing nothing dramatic: Samsung explains the washer stops for a short period to allow the suds to dissipate and the cycle should then continue, so let it. Afterwards, add a rinse cycle to clear the bubbles and residue, as Samsung UK directs, then correct the cause — use HE detergent, which Samsung recommends for its low sudsing properties, and follow the detergent manufacturer's suggested amount for that product's concentration.

Samsung Washer Error Code Sud Reset

There is no reset procedure to perform for SUD, and Samsung publishes none: the code clears by itself once the suds have dissipated, which is the machine's designed response to an over-sudsing condition. Power-cycling the washer does not remove foam from the tub and does not change the dose that caused it, so the meaningful 'reset' is the corrected detergent amount — and the extra rinse Samsung recommends — on the next load.
