Samsung Dryer DE Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix
Door error — the door is open or the door switch is not registering closed (dE display).
DE (shown dE) is the door code on Samsung dryers that use the letter-style door designation (others show DC). The meaning and fix path are the same: the control cannot confirm the door is closed, so it will not start or it pauses. Door physically ajar, a worn door switch, or a damaged catch are the causes. Samsung files DE inside a wider door family than most owners ever see: its Canadian dryer page groups 'dC, dE, dF, do, d0, 1 DC, 1 dF' together as errors that 'indicate issues with the door, its latch, or the sensors detecting their status', with one shared instruction — ensure the latch is securely fixed, no items are obstructing the door, and it is closed properly. That grouping explains the two things that confuse owners. First, the spelling zoo (do and d0 are the same report read two ways on segmented displays; the 1-prefixed forms are the same codes on displays that prefix a compartment number). Second, the family's split personality: most of its members report the door's position, while dF reports the health of the sensing circuit itself. DE sits on the position side of that split — which is why Samsung's DE instructions are about the door, its obstructions and Child Lock, and why a DE that outlives those checks is reclassified, in practice, as the circuit's problem.
What causes the DE code on a Samsung dryer?
Door not fully latched
Clothing at the catch; door closed to but not clicked.
Worn door switch
Intermittent contact — stops when the machine vibrates.
Broken catch/strike
Door won't hold fully home.
Child Lock making the door report itself
Samsung's dryer information page adds a cause most door-code advice misses: check whether Child Lock is on, because with Child Lock on you may get the dE message when you open the door even though the dryer is not operating. In that presentation the door circuit is not faulty at all — the control is announcing a door opening it was told to guard. A dE that appears while the machine sits idle, right after the door is opened, belongs to this branch first.
The door-switch circuit, not the door (Samsung's dF boundary)
Samsung separates the door family into the door-open report (dC/dE) and the switch-circuit fault it spells dF: 'incorrect door switch', handled by unplugging the dryer and checking for loose or damaged wiring connections in the door/lock switch circuit, with replacement of the door lock/switch as the service outcome. A dryer whose door is provably shut and latched but which still reports the door is usually telling the dF story in dE clothing — the sensing circuit, not the door, has failed.
Checks to run before you replace anything
- Close the door firmly and check the catch area for obstructions.
- Hold the door in and press Start — running while held means switch/catch wear.
- Inspect catch and strike for damage.
- Work Samsung's published instruction set in order: close the door and start again; make sure no laundry is caught in the door; check whether Child Lock is on. Samsung prints those three before any service step, because together they cover the door itself, the obstruction, and the one control state that manufactures this message on a healthy machine.
- Decide which presentation you have before suspecting parts: dE at start-up with the door never opened points at latch engagement; dE part-way through a cycle points at a contact that vibration can break; dE appearing when the door is opened on an idle machine points at Child Lock. Samsung groups the whole family as 'issues with the door, its latch, or the sensors detecting their status' — the presentation is how you choose which of the three to chase.
- If the door is sound, follow Samsung's dF instruction as the circuit check: unplug the dryer first, then look for loose or damaged wiring connections in the door/lock switch circuit. Samsung publishes this as an owner check on the dF row, with unplugging as its stated precondition — it is also the natural limit of owner diagnosis on this family, because the next step Samsung prints is replacing the switch through a service centre.
Samsung dryer error code de fix
- Replace the door switch if latching is sound but DE persists.
- Replace damaged catch/strike parts.
- If Child Lock is the author of the message, turn it off with your model's button pair — Samsung's dryer manuals operate it by holding the two marked buttons together for about three seconds (Dryness and Temp on current manuals) — after which all buttons respond again and the door message stops appearing on an idle machine. The lock staying active after a restart is documented Samsung behaviour, not a fault: Samsung's manuals note it remains active even after you restart the dryer, so a power cycle will not clear it for you.
- Treat a dE that survives Samsung's three checks as Samsung does: if the information code remains, contact a Samsung service centre. That is not a shrug — on this family the remaining suspects are the switch and its circuit, Samsung assigns their replacement to service, and a dryer run with its door sensing defeated or bridged is a safety device removed, which no fix on this page will ever recommend.
The part that usually fails: Door switch
Continuity test: contacts should close when the plunger is pressed.
How to reset / clear the DE code
Clears when the switch registers closed; usually immediate.
Samsung dryer codes clear with a power cycle: unplug for about 5 minutes (gas models: also confirm the gas valve state hasn't changed), plug back in and run a timed dry cycle. Sensor and motor codes that return immediately are active faults — the board tests the motor circuit and thermistors at the start of every cycle.
Why does the DE code keep coming back?
Mid-cycle DE with vibration = marginal switch contacts — replace it. A DE that returns follows the circuit's logic, not the door's. The pattern to record is when it returns: always at the same point in a heated cycle suggests a contact that opens as the cabinet warms and vibrates; immediately at every start, on a door you have proven shut, suggests the sensing circuit has failed outright — Samsung's dF case, whose documented handling is the unplugged wiring check in the door/lock switch circuit and then switch replacement through service. Either way, the return itself is the information: the door has been eliminated, so further door-slamming only wears the latch that was never the fault.
How to stop DE coming back
- Door not fully latched: Clothing at the catch; door closed to but not clicked.
- Worn door switch: Intermittent contact — stops when the machine vibrates.
- Broken catch/strike: Door won't hold fully home.
Retrieving stored fault codes on Samsung dryers
Samsung dryers include a test/diagnostic mode on many models (entered via a button combination such as holding specific cycle pads while powering on — the service manual for the model lists it) that shows stored codes and lets a technician run the motor, heater and sensor checks individually.
Other Samsung dryer error codes
| Code | Meaning | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| 3C | Motor error — the dryer's drive motor (or its control feedback) is faulty. | Open the cabinet (unplug first) and inspect belt, idler, rollers and blower housing for obstructions; replace worn support parts as a set. |
| 3E | Inverter motor error; 3E is the variant display of 3C. | Try restarting the cycle; if the code persists, contact Samsung service. |
| 5C | Drainage problem; draining malfunction or the water tank is full. | Straighten the hose, thaw it if frozen, empty the water tank, and restart. |
| 5E | Drainage problem; 5E is the display variant of 5C. | Check the drain hose, empty the water tank, turn the dryer on, and start again. |
| 9C1 | Voltage/power-supply fault — the dryer has detected supply voltage outside its operating range (9C family). | Have an electrician correct circuit/outlet issues — dryer circuits are high-current; this is not DIY territory. |
| 9C2 | Electronic control error in the 9C voltage family. | Check power is supplied properly and the cord is plugged in; contact service if it persists. |
| AC | Electronic control problem; invalid communication between components. | Restart the dryer; if the error persists, contact a Samsung service center. |
| AC6 | Communication error between the main and inverter PBAs. | Try restarting the cycle; if the code persists, contact Samsung service. |
| AE | Electronic control problem; AE is the variant display of AC. | Please contact a Samsung service center if the code appears. |
| AE6 | Communication error; AE6 is the variant display of AC6. | Try restarting the cycle; if the code persists, contact Samsung service. |
| BC2 | Jammed button error (bC2); a panel button is stuck. | Power off the dryer and press each button to release any stuck buttons. |
| BE | Jammed button error (bE); a panel button is stuck. | Power off the dryer and press each button to release any stuck buttons. |
| BE2 | Jammed button error (bE2); a panel button is stuck. | Power off the dryer and press each button to release any stuck buttons. |
| C1 | Vent Blockage test result: laundry was detected in the drum. | Remove the laundry from the drum and run the Vent Blockage test again. |

Codes DE gets confused with
9C1 — Voltage/power-supply fault — the dryer has detected supply voltage outside its operating range (9C family). Samsung's 9C family covers electrical supply faults.
DC — Door error — the dryer thinks the door is open or not latched. DC (dC) on a Samsung dryer means the door switch is not reporting 'closed'.
HE — Heating error — the dryer is overheating or the heating system is misbehaving. HE reports a heating-system abnormality on Samsung dryers: temperatures rising beyond the expected pattern (or a heater circuit fault detected during checks).
CL9 — Vent Blockage test result — after a Vent Blockage test, CL9 (also printed CLg on Samsung's lists) means the duct system cannot exhaust properly: the vent is clogged. It is a test result, not a running-cycle fault and not Child Lock. CL9 only has a meaning in one place: the results of a Samsung dryer's Vent Blockage test.
Frequently asked questions
Is DE the same as DC on Samsung dryers?
Yes — same door fault, different display style.
Can Child Lock make my Samsung dryer show dE?
Yes — Samsung's dryer information page says so directly: check if the Child Lock is on, because if it is, you may get this message when you open the door even though the dryer is not operating. The dryer is reporting the guarded door, not a broken one. Turn Child Lock off with the marked button pair for your model (held together for about three seconds) and the message behaviour ends.
What is the difference between dE and dF on a Samsung dryer?
Samsung treats them as two members of one door family with different suspects. dE (with dC) is the door-open report: dryer operation with the door open, fixed by closing the door, clearing anything caught in it, and checking Child Lock. dF is the incorrect-door-switch fault: Samsung's instruction is to unplug the dryer and check for loose or damaged wiring in the door/lock switch circuit, and it anticipates replacing the door lock/switch through a service centre. Same doorway, different defendant — dE accuses the door's position, dF accuses the circuit that senses it.
Why does my Samsung dryer show dE when the door is shut?
Because the code reports what the control believes, and Samsung defines the family as the door, its latch, or the sensors detecting their status. A shut door still reports open when laundry is trapped at the seal, when the latch is not fully engaged, or when the sensing circuit is failing — the last of those is Samsung's dF territory. Work Samsung's order: door closed firmly and started again, seal checked for caught laundry, Child Lock checked — and if the code remains on a provably shut door, Samsung's route is a service centre, because the suspect has narrowed to the switch circuit.
What does error code de mean on samsung dryer?
Door error — the door is open or the door switch is not registering closed (dE display). DE (shown dE) is the door code on Samsung dryers that use the letter-style door designation (others show DC).
