Samsung Dryer CL9 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Samsung Dryer display showing CL9 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Vent Blockage test result — after a Vent Blockage test, CL9 (also printed CLg on Samsung's lists) means the duct system cannot exhaust properly: the vent is clogged. It is a test result, not a running-cycle fault and not Child Lock.

CL9 only has a meaning in one place: the results of a Samsung dryer's Vent Blockage test. Samsung Canada's dryer code page files CL9 in a group headed 'Vent Blockage test results' — 'Clg, Cl9, Cg, C9, C80, C8o, C8, C90, C9o, Ct: these codes appear after a Vent Blockage test' — and Samsung US's Vent Blockage test guide lists 'CLg, Cg, CL9, C9, C80, C8, C90' together as 'the duct system cannot exhaust properly', with cleaning the exhaust vent as the remedy. Samsung prints the first result two ways, CLg and CL9, because on a segmented display the letter g and the digit 9 are near-identical; they are one result, not two codes. Two cautions follow from Samsung's own lists. First, Samsung assigns percentages only to the numbered results — C8/C80 mean about 80% clogged and C90/C9 mean over 90% clogged — and gives CL9/CLg no percentage of its own, so this page does not call CL9 a '90% blockage': that figure belongs to C9/C90. Second, CL9 is not Child Lock: Samsung's dryer manuals describe Child Lock as a panel lock with its own indicator (all buttons except Power disabled while it is on), and no Samsung dryer document displays it as CL9. An earlier version of this entry treated CL9 as an undocumented Child Lock reading; Samsung's published dryer lists contradict that, and the entry has been rewritten. (Corrected 2026-10-28.)

Applies to: Samsung dryers with the Vent Blockage test (Installation Check) feature; not all models have the test — Samsung directs owners to their user manual to confirm. CL9 appears as a test result only, never as a mid-cycle fault.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Unplug before opening the cabinet — electric dryers run on 240V and can hold a charge at the terminal block. On gas models, never bypass the flame sensor or igniter safety circuit; if you smell gas, stop and call the gas utility or a technician.

What causes the CL9 code on a Samsung dryer?

A clogged exhaust vent run

Lint builds up through the duct run — in bends, in a long run, and at the outside hood — until the test's airflow measurement fails. This is the cause Samsung's result names: the duct system cannot exhaust properly.

A crushed, kinked or over-long vent hose behind the dryer

The short flexible connector is the easiest section to damage when the dryer is pushed back; the test reads the whole path, so a crushed connector fails it exactly like a clogged wall run.

A blocked outside vent hood or lint screen

A hood flap stuck with lint, a screen fitted over the outlet, or a packed lint filter housing chokes the same airflow the test measures. Samsung's standing advice is to clean the exhaust vent once or twice a year even when the test passes.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Establish that a test actually ran: CL9 is only produced by the Vent Blockage test (empty drum, door closed, roughly a two-minute run on models that have it). A CL9 reading with no test behind it should be re-read carefully — photograph the display; CLg and CL9 are the same result in two printings.
  2. Work the vent path from the dryer outward: lint filter and its housing first, then the connector hose (look for crushing and kinks), then the duct run, then the outside hood (flap free, no screen clogged with lint).
  3. Use Samsung's comparison for models without the test, which also isolates the vent after a failed result: disconnect the exhaust vent from the dryer, run a Time Dry cycle for at least 30 seconds with Eco Dry off if fitted, and feel for hot air in the drum. Hotter with the vent disconnected confirms the vent path; the same heat either way clears it.
  4. After cleaning, run the Vent Blockage test again and record the new result — a pass (0 or End) closes the diagnosis; the result stays on the display for about five minutes before the dryer powers off.

How to fix cl9 error code samsung dryer?

  1. Clean the dryer's exhaust vent — Samsung's stated remedy for this result. Clear the full path (filter housing, connector, duct run, outside hood), not only the section behind the dryer.
  2. Correct the installation faults the cleaning exposes: replace a crushed connector, shorten an excessive run where practical, and free a stuck hood flap.
  3. Re-run the Vent Blockage test to prove the fix. Samsung also advises cleaning the exhaust vent once or twice a year even if the dryer passes, because a passing test is a snapshot, not a guarantee.

The part that usually fails: None initially

CL9 condemns no part. The vent path is the finding. Only a CL9 that returns with the vent disconnected and proven clear points inside the machine, and Samsung's route for that case is a service visit, not a part to order from this page.

Samsung dryer cl9 error code reset

There is no code to clear: the result remains on the display for about five minutes, then the dryer turns off (or press POWER to turn it off sooner). Cleaning the vent and re-running the test is the reset — a clean result replaces CL9.

Samsung dryer codes clear with a power cycle: unplug for about 5 minutes (gas models: also confirm the gas valve state hasn't changed), plug back in and run a timed dry cycle. Sensor and motor codes that return immediately are active faults — the board tests the motor circuit and thermistors at the start of every cycle.

Why does the CL9 code keep coming back?

CL9 returning soon after a thorough clean means the restriction is being missed or is re-forming: re-check the outside hood and the connector first (the two sections a quick clean skips), and check whether cycle times are lengthening again — Samsung names lengthening cycle times on a hot dryer as the classic clogged-vent presentation. Samsung also warns that some older models do not reduce heat when the vent is clogged, which is precisely the case where a blockage is a fire risk rather than a nuisance: a dryer that runs long and hot with a failing test result should not be kept in service on the strength of a reset.

Can you still use the dryer with CL9 showing? Not until the vent is cleaned and the test passes. Samsung is explicit that newer models reduce heat when a blockage is detected — so a dryer showing this result may dry poorly by design — and that older models which do not reduce heat carry the fire risk instead. Either way, the result is the instruction: clean first, dry after.

How to stop CL9 coming back

When to call a pro. If the test still reports blockage with the vent disconnected at the back of the dryer and the filter housing clean, the vent is proven and the dryer's own sensing is the remaining suspect — that is a Samsung service visit. Also stop and call for service if there is any sign of scorching, a burning smell, or a vent run you cannot fully clear (in-wall runs are a contractor clean, not a dryer repair).

Retrieving stored fault codes on Samsung dryers

Samsung dryers include a test/diagnostic mode on many models (entered via a button combination such as holding specific cycle pads while powering on — the service manual for the model lists it) that shows stored codes and lets a technician run the motor, heater and sensor checks individually.

Codes CL9 gets confused with

DE — Door error — the door is open or the door switch is not registering closed (dE display). DE (shown dE) is the door code on Samsung dryers that use the letter-style door designation (others show DC).

9C1 — Voltage/power-supply fault — the dryer has detected supply voltage outside its operating range (9C family). Samsung's 9C family covers electrical supply faults.

HE — Heating error — the dryer is overheating or the heating system is misbehaving. HE reports a heating-system abnormality on Samsung dryers: temperatures rising beyond the expected pattern (or a heater circuit fault detected during checks).

DC — Door error — the dryer thinks the door is open or not latched. DC (dC) on a Samsung dryer means the door switch is not reporting 'closed'.

Frequently asked questions

What does CL9 mean on a Samsung dryer?

CL9 is a Vent Blockage test result. Samsung lists CLg, Cg, CL9 and C9 among the results that mean the duct system cannot exhaust properly — the vent is clogged — and its remedy is to clean the dryer's exhaust vent and run the test again. It appears only after a Vent Blockage test, not during normal drying.

Is CL9 the Child Lock on a Samsung dryer?

No. Samsung's dryer manuals describe Child Lock as a panel lock — while it is on, every button except Power is disabled and its own indicator shows — and no Samsung dryer document displays Child Lock as CL9. Samsung's published dryer code lists file CL9 under Vent Blockage test results only. If the panel will not respond, check the Child Lock indicator; if CL9 followed a vent test, clean the vent.

How do I clear a Samsung dryer CL9 result?

There is nothing to clear in the control: the result stays on the display for about five minutes and the dryer then turns off by itself. Clean the exhaust vent — the full path, including the outside hood — and run the Vent Blockage test again. A 0 or End result has replaced CL9; a repeat CL9 with the vent proven clear is a service case.

Does CL9 mean my Samsung dryer vent is 90% blocked?

Samsung does not say that. Its lists attach the percentage figures to the numbered results — about 80% for C8/C80 and over 90% for C90/C9 — and place CL9 (printed CLg on the same lists) in the general group that means the duct cannot exhaust properly, with no percentage of its own. Treat CL9 as 'vent clogged, clean it', not as a measured 90%.

How to fix cl9 error code samsung dryer?

Start here: Clean the dryer's exhaust vent — Samsung's stated remedy for this result. Clear the full path (filter housing, connector, duct run, outside hood), not only the section behind the dryer. Correct the installation faults the cleaning exposes: replace a crushed connector, shorten an excessive run where practical, and free a stuck hood flap.
