Navien Error Code E012: Flame Loss — Meaning, Causes & Fix

Navien Water Heater display showing E012 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Flame loss — Navien tankless water heaters (NPE, NPE-2; legacy display form 012). The burner ignited and flame was proved, then the flame was lost during operation. Navien's user-manual actions for E012 are to clean the intake air filter and ensure the electrical cord is properly grounded. Manual reset.

E012 is a mid-burn failure, and its meaning is fixed by the moment it describes. The ignition sequence succeeded — gas flowed, the igniter sparked, the burner lit and the flame rod proved the flame — the unit settled into heating, and then, with hot water still being demanded, the flame went away or its proof did. Everything about E012 follows from that sequence. Because light-off succeeded, the causes that produce a pure E003 (a valve that never opens, an igniter that never sparks) are largely acquitted; because the loss happens under way, the suspects are the things that can fail a running flame: a gas supply that sags under load, combustion air that falters, a flame that lifts or destabilises, and a flame-sensing circuit that loses a flame that is actually still there. Navien's own documentation maps exactly those territories. Its service check list for E012 asks whether the main gas line valve is open, directs checking the gas pressure against its operating range and the gas meter's BTU capacity, sends you to the flame rod and its diagnostic value, and then lists the intake air filter, the ground wire and the power supply — finishing with tightening the ground connection screws on the heat exchanger. That list quietly contains the code's central subtlety: an E012 can be a lost flame or a lost report of a flame, and the two feel identical from the tap — hot water runs, then goes cold, and the display shows E012. The manual's remedies for the user are the two that touch both stories without opening the gas train: clean the intake air filter (a starved air supply genuinely destabilises a running flame) and ensure the electrical cord is properly grounded (flame sensing is an electrical measurement that leans on the ground path; a poor ground loses real flames on paper). The component sections fill in the service side: the main gas valve's documented error codes are E003 and E012 — a valve that opens for ignition and then cannot hold or modulate is an E012 suspect — and the burner section names dust or soot deposits on the burner surface and unstable flame conditions among its failure events, with flame loss among its effects. An E012, read properly, is therefore not 'the flame sensor code' or 'the gas code': it is the running-flame code, and its diagnosis is the short list of things that can take a proved flame away — supply, air, burner condition, valve behaviour, and the sensing path that reports it all.

Applies to: Navien tankless water heaters — verified identically (flame loss; clean the intake air filter; ensure proper grounding) in the NPE-2 User's Information Manual, the first-generation NPE User's Manual and the NPE AWE/SWE table, with the detailed check list and the gas valve/burner component sections in the NPE Service Manual. Navien boiler lines use E012 for the same flame-loss fault; no boiler-specific content is used in this entry.
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Navien's own manual warnings frame owner work on this platform narrowly, and this site follows them. Gas and combustion are licensed territory: if you smell gas, do not try to light any appliance, do not touch electrical switches or use a phone in the building — leave and call the gas supplier or the fire department from outside. Never operate the heater without proper venting, with the front cover open, or with vent piping damaged, separated or corroded: the manuals tie those conditions to fire and carbon monoxide poisoning, and direct shutting off the gas supply if the heater is damaged. Scalding is the quiet hazard — the heaters ship set to 120 °F (49 °C), and water at or above 125 °F can cause instant scalding. Owner-level work is the outside of the machine and its documented maintenance: vent terminations checked visually from outdoors, the condensate drain outlet, inlet water filter and intake air filter cleaning, and one reset. Burner, gas valve, venting repairs, condensate-trap and neutralizer work, DIP switches, orifices and PCB work are licensed-technician work.

What causes the E012 code on a Navien water heater?

Gas pressure that sags under load

The Service Manual's E012 list is supply-first: main gas line valve open, gas pressure within the operating range, and the gas meter checked for proper BTU capacity. A running burner draws far more gas than an ignition attempt, so a supply that is adequate at light-off can starve a flame at full fire — an undersized meter or line, a regulator problem, a propane supply running low, or other appliances pulling the same supply down. An E012 that arrives at peak demand, or when the furnace and stove run together, is this branch confessing.

A dirty intake air filter starving the flame

Navien puts filter cleaning in the user actions for E012 itself — one of only two owner remedies the code carries. A running flame needs its combustion air continuously, and a filter loading up with dust and lint throttles that air mid-burn: combustion degrades, the flame destabilises, and the unit shuts down on flame loss. The same filter drives E110 when it blocks the air proof outright; E012 is what it produces when the starvation reaches a lit burner first.

Flame sensing lost: flame rod, wiring or ground

The Service Manual directs checking the flame rod and verifying its diagnostic value, checking the ground wire and power supply, and tightening the ground connection screws on the heat exchanger. A coated or deteriorating flame rod, a chafed wire, or a poor ground can drop the flame signal while the flame itself burns on — the control, unable to prove fire, does the only safe thing and closes the gas valve, converting a sensing failure into a real flame loss a moment later. This branch worsens gradually: occasional E012s, then frequent ones.

Burner condition: deposits and an unstable flame

The Service Manual's burner section lists dust or soot deposits on the burner surface among its failure events and unstable flame conditions and flame loss among its effects. A burner that lights cleanly can still carry a flame poorly once it is running — deposits distort the flame pattern, and a flame that lifts, flutters or wanders off the flame rod's position will be reported as lost even at full gas pressure. This branch often travels with noise or a visible change in the burner's behaviour, which a technician can observe through a firing cycle.

A gas valve that opens but cannot hold

The main gas valve's component entry gives its failure event as 'unable to open/close' and names E003 and E012 as its error codes: the same valve that fails shut at ignition (E003) can fail in operation — dropping out, sticking or modulating wrongly — and take a proved flame with it (E012). The Service Manual tests it the same way in both codes: drive voltage in the documented DC 22–24 V range, coil resistance, and operation proven with a manometer. A valve branch E012 tends to be abrupt and repeatable rather than gradual.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. SAFETY: flame loss is a combustion event. If you smell gas at any point, the manual's instruction governs: do not try to light anything, do not touch electrical switches, leave and call the gas supplier or fire department from outside. Soot, scorching or a CO alarm moves any E012 straight to a technician, with the unit off.
  2. Do the code's two documented owner remedies first, properly: clean the intake air filter (power off, cover off, wash the filter, dry it completely, refit — the full procedure is in the manual's maintenance section), and ensure the electrical cord is properly grounded — a heater plugged into an ungrounded or adapter-fed outlet has a named E012 suspect under it.
  3. Establish the timing pattern, which is this code's best evidence: E012 seconds after light-off (a fragile flame or a sensing path that never firms up), E012 deep into long draws (supply sag, filter starvation, condensate or heat effects building), E012 only when other gas appliances run (house gas capacity), E012 at one particular fixture's low flow versus all fixtures. Write the pattern down; it sorts the five causes before a meter comes out.
  4. Note what you can hear and see during a firing cycle from outside the cabinet: does the burner light with its normal sound and then cut abruptly, or fade and struggle? Does the loss coincide with the fan changing speed or another appliance starting? Do not open the cabinet to watch the burner — observation stops at sound, display and the outdoor termination.
  5. Check the house side of the supply story: other gas appliances' behaviour during the same period, a propane tank's level, any recent gas, meter or electrical work. An E012 that began the day the electrical panel was changed belongs, until proven otherwise, to the ground branch Navien names.
  6. Reset once (first-generation NPE: Reset button; NPE-2: Back button) after the filter and ground checks, then run the longest hot water draw you can and stay for it. On first-generation NPE units, pull the error history afterwards (Info button held over 2 seconds): a history stacking E012s at shortening intervals is a deteriorating rod, valve or supply — not a run of bad luck.

Navien 012 error code fix

  1. Air branch: clean or replace the intake air filter and shorten its cleaning interval to the room's reality (the manual's baseline is every 3–4 months). Verify with a full-length hot water draw: an E012 cured by the filter stays cured under load, not just at startup.
  2. Ground/sensing branch: a technician restores the ground path (including the heat exchanger ground connection screws Navien names), cleans or replaces the flame rod, repairs its wiring, and verifies the flame rod's diagnostic value/flame current during a live burn. A rod cleaned while its ground stays poor is a temporary fix on a timer.
  3. Supply branch: a technician measures gas pressure statically and dynamically (at firing rate, with other appliances running) and corrects what sags — supply sizing, regulator, meter capacity with the gas supplier, or a propane supply problem. This branch is fixed in the gas system, not in the heater, and no heater part substitutes for it.
  4. Burner branch: a technician inspects and cleans the burner surface, corrects the deposits' cause, and proves a stable flame through complete firing cycles at low and high fire. Burner work is combustion work — licensed, and verified by observation and combustion checks, not by the absence of the code for an afternoon.
  5. Gas valve branch: a technician proves the valve's drive voltage (documented DC 22–24 V) and coil resistance and its operation on a manometer; a valve that drops a proved flame with correct drive present is replaced, and a valve whose drive disappears mid-burn sends the diagnosis to the wiring and PCB behind it.

The part that usually fails: Often no part — the filter or the ground; then the flame rod; the main gas valve only on its electrical proof

E012's parts order follows Navien's own actions: the two no-part remedies (intake filter, grounding) come first and cure a real share of the code. The sensing branch costs a flame rod when cleaning and ground restoration do not hold. The supply branch costs work on the house gas system rather than a heater part. The main gas valve — the expensive name attached to this code — is replaced only when its documented tests (drive voltage, coil resistance, manometer operation) convict it, and the burner is serviced rather than replaced in its branch.

Navien error code 012 reset button

E012 is a manual-reset code: first-generation NPE resets from the front-panel Reset button (or by disconnecting and reconnecting power, per the Service Manual); NPE-2 resets with the Back button. Reset after the code's own documented owner steps — filter cleaned, grounding ensured — and then test with a genuinely long draw, because E012 is a running fault: a heater can reset, light beautifully and still lose its flame four minutes into a shower. One reset followed by a full test is diagnosis. A daily reset ritual is not: a flame that keeps being lost is a supply, air, burner, valve or sensing fault maturing, and each reset re-offers gas to a burner whose flame has already failed once.

Navien documents two reset forms, one per panel generation, and they are not interchangeable. First-generation NPE: press the Reset button on the front panel — the Service Manual adds the alternative of disconnecting, then reconnecting electrical power to the water heater. NPE-2: press the Back button — the NPE-2 User's Information Manual gives that as the reset in both its operating section (3.3) and its troubleshooting section, and notes the unit retains its settings through a power outage. A reset clears the display and lets the unit retry; it does not clear the underlying condition, and the manuals' tables divide codes into manual-reset codes (which wait for your press: E003, E012, E016, E110 among them), auto-reset codes (which clear when the condition passes: E004, E046, E782 among them) and alarms (E760's flushing/service alarm). If resetting does not solve the problem, both user manuals give the same next step: the troubleshooting table, or Technical Support at 1-800-519-8794.

Why does the E012 code keep coming back?

Read a returning E012 by its interval and its company. Shortening intervals over weeks: a flame rod or ground path deteriorating, or a burner fouling progressively. Returns only at peak household demand: dynamic gas pressure, full stop — the heater is the messenger for a house supply that cannot feed everything at once. Returns after electrical work in the home: the ground branch until a technician proves otherwise. Returns with combustion noise or a changed burner sound: burner condition. And an E012 that begins appearing alongside E110s is telling one story in two codes — the air path (filter first) is failing both the proof and the flame.

Can you still use the water heater with E012 showing? No — while E012 is displayed, the burner is out and the unit will not heat. The shutdown is the safety system working: gas does not flow to an unproved flame. Reset once after the filter and ground checks and test honestly with a long draw; a code that returns means the unit stays off until the running-flame fault is found.

How to stop E012 coming back

When to call a pro. Call a licensed gas technician if: E012 returns after the filter is cleaned and grounding is confirmed; losses are frequent, shortening in interval, or accompanied by combustion noise, soot, scorching or any CO concern (unit off for the last three); the code coincides with other appliances struggling (a house gas-supply case, with the gas supplier involved); or the diagnosis reaches the flame rod's live-burn measurements, the burner, or the gas valve — all licensed combustion work in Navien's own check structure.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Navien water heaters

A Navien tankless unit reports on its front panel display, and the panel is generation-specific. First-generation NPE units show the error in the manuals' E-form (E003) and navigate with dedicated buttons the Service Manual names: Information (Info), Diagnostics, +/-, Reset and Power. NPE-2 units use the EZNav panel — Menu, Back, OK, Up and Down — around a display that shows combustion/error status, recirculation and cascade status, a status/flow readout with the current flow rate, and the temperature setting alongside the code. Two details matter. Many codes carry a subcode that narrows the fault (E110's subcodes separate fan-check, hot-water and space-heating blockages; E615's name which input is out of range), and the subcode is part of the diagnosis. And the unit remembers: the Service Manual documents an error history on first-generation NPE (Info held over 2 seconds; the 10 most recent errors, labelled 0–9, with elapsed hours and subcodes), and the NPE-2 installation documentation carries an equivalent Viewing Error History function. Photograph the display, subcode included, before resetting.

Other Navien water heater error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
E003Ignition failure — Navien tankless water heaters (NPE, NPE-2; legacy display form 003). The unit attempted ignition and no flame was detected. Navien's NPE Service Manual states the sequence exactly: in the case of an ignition failure, the water heater will attempt ignition 10 times; if no flame is detected, it displays E003, which is manually cleared. Manual reset.Supply branch: restore the gas supply — open the valve fully, refill or replace the propane supply, or wait out/confirm the utility interruption with the gas supplier — then reset once and prove a full heating cycle. If static pressure reads normally but the unit fails under load, the fix is a technician's dynamic pressure test and correction of the supply sizing or connector, not a part inside the heater.
E004False flame detection — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): the control senses a flame signal when no flame should exist; auto reset in the NPE AWE/SWE tableEnsure the electrical cord is properly grounded (Navien's stated action). A standing E004 is technician work — a control that cannot trust its flame proof must not be run on resets
E016Overheating of heat exchanger — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): the heat exchanger has overheated and the unit has shut down; manual reset. This — not E001 — is the tankless overheat codeTurn the system OFF for at least 30 minutes, then restart; clean the cold water inlet filter and flush the heat exchanger (Navien's stated actions). A repeating E016 needs a technician — never run an overheating exchanger on resets
E030Exhaust overheating — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): the exhaust limit shuts the unit down when flue temperature exceeds its limit (the US user manuals state 149 °F / 65 °C; the NPE Service Manual states 230 °F / 110 °C for over 10 seconds — a generational difference, same fault)Turn OFF for at least 30 minutes, then restart; clean the cold water inlet filter and flush the heat exchanger (Navien's stated actions). Technician work if it returns
E031Overheating of burner — tankless, NPE-2 table: the burner itself has overheated. (Not listed in the first-generation NPE table checked; Navien's action for it in the NPE-2 manual is to contact technical support)No owner fix is published: contact Navien Technical Support (1-800-519-8794) or a licensed technician. Do not reset and run a burner-overheat code repeatedly
E046Abnormal operation: limit control — tankless (NPE/NPE-2) (the NPE AWE/SWE table words the same code 'heat exchanger overheating sensor'): the heat exchanger's high-limit protection has operated or its sensor is abnormal; the Service Manual ties E046 to the high limit switch (with E016)Navien's user manuals route E046 straight to Technical Support — licensed technician work. Treat it as an overheat code: let the unit cool and do not force operation
E047Abnormal operation: exhaust thermostat — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): the exhaust thermistor is open or shorted (Service Manual subcodes 1 = open, 2 = short)Technician work: check the exhaust thermistor connection and the sensor, check the PCB connection (the Service Manual's stated checks). Navien's user manuals route E047 to Technical Support
E060Abnormal operation: dual venturi — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): the dual venturi limit switch operates abnormally (Service Manual subcodes cover its ON / close-OFF / open-ON states)Technician work: check the dual venturi connection, test it in TEST mode, and check the gas orifice for obstructions. Navien's user manuals route E060 to Technical Support
E109Abnormal operation: fan motor — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): abnormal fan motor activity; manual reset. The fan provides combustion air and purges flue gas, working with the air pressure sensorClean the intake air filter (Navien's stated owner action). If E109 stands, a technician checks fan voltage and connections and cleans or replaces the fan motor
E110Exhaust blockage / abnormal air pressure — Navien tankless water heaters (NPE, NPE-2; legacy display form 110). Navien's US user manuals name E110 'abnormal air pressure'; the NPE Service Manual and the NPE AWE/SWE table name the same code 'exhaust blockage (condensate blockage)'. The Service Manual's subcodes divide it: 1 = exhaust blockage (checking the fan), 2 = exhaust blockage (using hot water), 3 = exhaust blockage (using space heating). Manual reset.Termination branch: clear the obstruction from outside and correct what invited it — a termination that drifts over needs its exposure addressed by an installer (relocation or an approved shield, per local code), and a pipe with a nest inside or a damaged/separated joint is vent-system repair, not a reset. Never cap, screen or narrow a termination with anything not approved for it: the 'fix' becomes next winter's blockage.
E127Abnormal operation: APS — tankless, FIRST-generation NPE (AWE/SWE) table only: the air pressure sensor is open, shorted, at an abnormal initial value or not answering; manual reset. The NPE-2 table does not carry E127 — on NPE-2 the same air-pressure proof is reported under E110Technician work: inspect and test the APS and its hose/connections and replace the sensor if it does not prove. Never bypass the APS — it is the venting proof the burner waits for
E407Hot water outlet thermistor open or short circuit — tankless (NPE/NPE-2) (AWE/SWE table: 'hot water outlet1 thermistor')Technician work: check the thermistor and replace it if open or shorted (the Service Manual's stated action). Navien's user manuals route E407 to Technical Support
E421Cold water inlet 1 thermistor open or short circuit — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): the control cannot read incoming cold water temperatureTechnician work: check the thermistor, verify its diagnostic value, replace the thermistor if open or shorted. Navien's user manuals route E421 to Technical Support
E432Cold water inlet 2 thermistor open or short circuit — tankless (NPE/NPE-2): the second cold water inlet temperature sensor reads open or shortedTechnician work: check the thermistor's voltage and resistance values and replace it if out of range (the Service Manual's stated checks)

Codes E012 gets confused with

E003 — Ignition failure — Navien tankless water heaters (NPE, NPE-2; legacy display form 003). The unit attempted ignition and no flame was detected. Navien's NPE Service Manual states the sequence exactly: in the case of an ignition failure, the water heater will attempt ignition 10 times; if no flame is detected, it displays E003, which is manually cleared. Manual reset. E003 is the Navien tankless platform's failed-light report, and its definition contains the whole diagnosis: the burner was commanded to light, the ignition sequence ran — repeatedly, up to ten attempts on the Service Manual's account — and the flame rod never reported a flame.

E110 — Exhaust blockage / abnormal air pressure — Navien tankless water heaters (NPE, NPE-2; legacy display form 110). Manual reset. E110 is the code where Navien's two naming traditions meet, and reading both names together gives the truest picture of the fault.

Frequently asked questions

What does Navien error code E012 mean?

Flame loss on Navien tankless water heaters (NPE/NPE-2): the burner ignited, flame was proved, and then the flame was lost during operation, so the unit shut down. Navien's own user actions for E012 are to clean the intake air filter and ensure the electrical cord is properly grounded; its service check list adds the main gas line and gas pressure (including the gas meter's BTU capacity), the flame rod and its diagnostic value, and tightening the ground connection screws on the heat exchanger.

How do I fix Navien error code E012?

In Navien's order: (1) clean the intake air filter — a starved air supply destabilises a running flame; (2) ensure the unit is properly grounded — flame sensing depends on the ground path; (3) reset once and test with a long hot water draw. If E012 returns, a technician works the service list: gas pressure under load and meter capacity, flame rod condition and its live measurement, ground screws and wiring, burner condition, and the main gas valve's documented electrical tests.

What is the difference between Navien E012 and E003?

When the flame failed. E003 is ignition failure: the sequence ran (up to ten attempts, per the Service Manual) and no flame was ever proved. E012 is flame loss: ignition succeeded, the burner ran, and the flame — or its sensing — was lost mid-operation. E003 starts diagnosis at light-off (supply, spark, valve opening); E012 starts it at what can fail a running flame (supply sag under load, air starvation, burner stability, sensing, a valve that cannot hold).

Can a dirty air filter cause E012?

Yes — it is one of the two remedies Navien itself prints for the code. A clogged intake filter throttles combustion air to a lit burner; the flame degrades and is lost. (The same filter, clogged further, produces E110 by failing the air-pressure proof before ignition.) Clean it as the manual directs — wash, dry completely, refit — before suspecting any part.

Why does my Navien lose flame when other appliances run?

That pattern is dynamic gas pressure: standing pressure looks fine, but when the heater fires at full rate alongside a furnace, stove or dryer, the supply — line, regulator or meter capacity — cannot feed everything, pressure at the heater sags, and the flame is lost. Navien's E012 check list names the gas meter's BTU capacity for exactly this case. It is corrected in the gas supply system by a licensed technician (with the gas supplier where meter capacity is the limit), not by parts inside the heater.

How do I reset Navien E012?

E012 is a manual-reset code. First-generation NPE: press the front-panel Reset button (the Service Manual also documents resetting by disconnecting and reconnecting electrical power). NPE-2: press the Back button. Reset after cleaning the intake filter and confirming grounding, then test with a long draw — E012 is a running fault, so a heater that lights after reset has not yet passed; it passes when it holds flame through a full heating cycle.

What is navien error code e012?

Flame loss — Navien tankless water heaters (NPE, NPE-2; legacy display form 012). The burner ignited and flame was proved, then the flame was lost during operation. Navien's user-manual actions for E012 are to clean the intake air filter and ensure the electrical cord is properly grounded. Manual reset. E012 is a mid-burn failure, and its meaning is fixed by the moment it describes.

How to fix navien error code e012?

Start here: Air branch: clean or replace the intake air filter and shorten its cleaning interval to the room's reality (the manual's baseline is every 3–4 months). Verify with a full-length hot water draw: an E012 cured by the filter stays cured under load, not just at startup.
