Maytag Washer XL Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Maytag Washer display showing XL — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Not a Maytag fault code — XL is a capacity/model designation (extra-large tub) on Maytag washers, sometimes mistaken for an error when a cycle stops for another reason.

Maytag sells XL-capacity models, and the badge gets mistaken for a code. Maytag's fault system is the F-code family (F9E1, F5E2, F7E5…) plus letter codes (UL, OL, Sd…). There is no XL fault. If the machine stopped, the real code is on the display at the moment of failure — capture it, and match the symptom (standing water → drain family; no fill → fill family; spin shake → balance family). The model-line facts deserve setting out plainly, because they are what convert an 'XL error' search into a solvable problem. Bravos XL is a named Maytag line: Maytag's own product literature for models such as the MVWB700BW and MVWB880BW heads the page 'Bravos XL HE Top Load Washer', advertises 'Extra-Large Capacity to Clean Your Largest Loads', and describes Bravos XL washers as Maytag brand's largest capacity washers ever — the XL is doing capacity work in the name, the same work it does in the model designations (MVWB835DW and its siblings are Bravos XL machines). Now set that beside the Bravos Use & Care manual's display-code list, which is the complete vocabulary of what a Bravos-generation washer can actually say: LF (washer is taking too long to fill), Ld (washer is taking too long to drain water from the wash tub), uL (unbalanced load), oL (over load) and Sd (suds detected). XL is not in the list, in any Maytag manual consulted for this page. Notice, though, what is in the list: the four codes the searches behind this page ask about by name — Ld, LF, Sd and UL — are precisely the Bravos XL code family. The owners typing those searches own the right machine and the right fault; only the filing is wrong. The useful move is never 'fix XL' but 'read which of the documented codes your Bravos XL is actually showing', and each of the four has a short, manual-written checklist, summarised below.

Applies to: Clarification — all Maytag washers.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the XL code on a Maytag washer?

Capacity badge mistaken for a code

XL = extra-large tub.

The real code missed

It flashed at failure and cleared/blanked later.

The model name remembered, the code forgotten

A Bravos XL that stops mid-cycle shows its real code at the moment of failure. An owner who reaches the machine minutes later, after the display has gone to rest or been cancelled, remembers the name on the console — Bravos XL — and searches that. The code existed; it simply was not witnessed.

A two-letter code misread at a glance

The Bravos display speaks in pairs of characters, and pairs are easy to transpose or half-read under laundry-room light: Ld read as part of a longer string, uL's lowercase u missed entirely. A photographed display settles in one second what memory argues about for an evening.

Symptom filed under the wrong heading

Some owners never saw a code at all: the machine stopped with water in it, or shook and quit, and the search begins from the machine's name plus 'error'. The symptom, not the badge, is the filing key — standing water belongs to the drain family, a shake-and-stop to the balance family.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Re-run and watch the display at the stop; photograph the code.
  2. Symptom-triage: water left / never filled / shake at spin.
  3. Re-run the failing cycle and stay for the stop: the Bravos display shows its two-character code as the fault posts. Photograph it. Ld, LF, Sd and uL each send you to a different ten-minute checklist.
  4. Triage by the tub while you wait: water standing in the basket points to Ld (drain); a tub that never filled or filled slowly points to LF (fill); visible foam or a slick load points to Sd (suds); a dry-ish load and a machine that quit at spin points to uL (balance).
  5. Check the model plate once (under the lid or on the cabinet rear) and confirm the machine is a Bravos XL (MVWB model family). Its Use & Care manual's troubleshooting list — LF, Ld, uL, oL, Sd — is the whole dictionary for this page's purposes.

How to fix the XL error code

  1. Diagnose the actual displayed code with its family guide.
  2. Ld on a Bravos XL: the manual's own checks are the drain hose — is it kinked or clogged, and is it installed properly per the installation instructions — then press POWER/CANCEL to clear the display. A hose proven clear moves the hunt to the pump.
  3. LF on a Bravos XL: the manual asks three questions — are the hot and cold faucets turned on, are the inlet hoses kinked or clogged, are the inlet valve screens clear — then POWER/CANCEL to clear. Work them in that order; they are ordered by likelihood.
  4. Sd on a Bravos XL: the manual's checks are detergent identity and dose — regular or non-HE detergent is not recommended for this washer, and concentrated formulas (2x and higher) use less per load. Let the suds reduction routine finish rather than restarting into the same foam.
  5. uL on a Bravos XL: if the code remains and the cycle dial is flashing after the correction routine stops, open the lid, redistribute the load in loose heaps evenly around the basket wall (not above the stainless steel portion), close the lid and press START/PAUSE.

The part that usually fails: None

No XL part exists — the effort belongs on the real code.

How to reset / clear the XL code

Not applicable to XL.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the XL code keep coming back?

Repeated stops with no readable code: run it watched, note stage + display at the stop — that's a technician's first question too. A Bravos XL that keeps 'having XL errors' is really keeping a log you have not read yet. Log each stop with its actual code and the cycle stage for two weeks: repeated Ld is a drain path deteriorating, repeated LF is supply or screens, repeated Sd is a dosing habit, repeated uL on ordinary loads is suspension wear arriving. The pattern across codes is the diagnosis; any single code is just an episode. If the machine stops with genuinely nothing readable on the display, that blankness is itself the finding — display and control diagnosis, not a code hunt.

Can you still use the washer with XL showing? Yes if a test cycle completes and no real code shows.

How to stop XL coming back

When to call a pro. Blank display + dead machine = power/control diagnosis.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Maytag washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Maytag washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
5DSuds detected — Maytag's segmented-display rendering of the Sd suds code.Let the routine finish; Clean Washer cycle empty/hot; dose down, HE only.
A10Compact front-load: long drain; washer is not draining within the allowed time.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
CLControl Lock / Child Lock status on Maytag washers — the panel is locked (not a fault). Maytag also uses CL-family prompts around its cleaning cycle on some models; in both cases it is a status, not an error.Hold the Control Lock key ~3 seconds to release (panel-printed method).
DCNeptune (shown dc): unbalanced load; spin never exceeded 400 RPM during final spin.Redistribute the load evenly and rerun the spin cycle.
DLBravos top-load (shown dL): lid cannot lock.Close the lid firmly and clear the latch; replace the lid lock if faulty.
DRFront-load: door not opened between cycles, code F5E4 also shown as dr.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DRNTop-load display (drn): long drain alert; washer takes too long to drain, same fault as F9E1.Straighten the hose, clean the pump, and keep hose end height and standpipe within manual limits.
DUBravos top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid, wait for the basket to stop, then retry.
E01E01 is the zero-padded E-half (E1) of a Maytag two-part F/E code — incomplete on its own. The pairings owners actually search are F03+E01 = F3E1 (water level / pressure system fault), F06+E01 = F6E1 (serial communication error between the main control/CCU and the motor control/MCU), and F09+E01 = F9E1 (drain pump system error / long drain).Diagnose the completed code: F3E1 = pressure hose and level sensing first; F9E1 = drain path, pump trap and pump; F6E1 = power reset once, then CCU–MCU harness and connectors (power off), then board-level service.
E2Neptune service diagnostic: stuck key; a key was pressed for more than 30 seconds.Check the keypad connection to the control board; replace the console if a key stays stuck.
E3On a current Maytag washer, E3 by itself is not a complete code — it is the second half of the two-part F#E# fault display, and the pairing owners are almost always catching is F5 + E3: F5E3, the lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load) unlock fault. The tech sheet's wording: the fault is displayed if the lid lock has not moved into the unlocked position, or its motor cannot be powered.Clean the lock opening and striker thoroughly and retry: on buildup cases — the majority — the bolt now retracts, the control confirms the unlocked state, and F5E3 clears without a single part.
F5E2Front-load: door cannot be locked after repeated attempts.Clear the latch area; replace the door lock assembly if it repeats.
F5E3Front-load: door cannot be unlocked.Wait for the drum to stop and power-cycle; replace the lock if stuck.
F7E1Motor speed sensing error; control cannot confirm rotation speed.Reduce the load, check the basket spins freely, and power-cycle the washer.

Codes XL gets confused with

CL — Control Lock / Child Lock status on Maytag washers — the panel is locked (not a fault). Maytag also uses CL-family prompts around its cleaning cycle on some models; in both cases it is a status, not an error. CL on a Maytag washer is a status display: most often Control Lock (buttons disabled deliberately), and on some models a prompt/state tied to the Clean Washer cycle.

UL — Unbalanced load — the washer can't balance the load for spin (Maytag top-load). UL is the balance give-up code on Maytag top-loaders: redistribution attempts failed.

5D — Suds detected — Maytag's segmented-display rendering of the Sd suds code. On Maytag washers (Whirlpool-built), 5D is the suds code Sd as read on a 7-segment display: the control detected oversudsing and is running its reduction routine.

E01 — E01 is the zero-padded E-half (E1) of a Maytag two-part F/E code — incomplete on its own. The pairings owners actually search are F03+E01 = F3E1 (water level / pressure system fault), F06+E01 = F6E1 (serial communication error between the main control/CCU and the motor control/MCU), and F09+E01 = F9E1 (drain pump system error / long drain). Maytag's Whirlpool-platform displays present a fault in two alternating parts, and the manuals write the parts both ways — Whirlpool's own laundry-centre manual, for example, lists '"F9" followed by "E1" or "F09" followed by "E01" (drain pump system error)'.

Frequently asked questions

Does Maytag have an XL error?

No — XL denotes capacity. The fault, if any, is the code shown when the machine stops.

Is XL an error code on a Maytag Bravos XL washer?

No. XL is part of the model line's name — Maytag's literature sells the Bravos XL as its extra-large-capacity top-loader. The Bravos Use & Care manual's display-code list contains LF, Ld, uL, oL and Sd, and no XL. The fault on your machine is one of those documented codes, shown at the moment it stopped.

What does Ld mean on a Maytag Bravos XL washer?

Ld means the washer is taking too long to drain water from the wash tub. The manual's checks are the drain hose first — kinked, clogged, or installed improperly — and POWER/CANCEL clears the display. If the hose run proves clear and Ld returns, the drain pump is the next suspect.

My Maytag Bravos XL washer stopped and I only remember 'XL' — how do I find the real code?

Run the same cycle again and watch the display at the stop, or check what the tub is telling you: standing water suggests Ld, a tub that never filled suggests LF, foam suggests Sd, and a quit-at-spin suggests uL. You can also read the machine's stored fault history in diagnostic mode — the Maytag diagnostic-mode guide on this site walks through it.
