Maytag Washer E3 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Maytag Washer display showing E3 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

On a current Maytag washer, E3 by itself is not a complete code — it is the second half of the two-part F#E# fault display, and the pairing owners are almost always catching is F5 + E3: F5E3, the lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load) unlock fault. The tech sheet's wording: the fault is displayed if the lid lock has not moved into the unlocked position, or its motor cannot be powered.

Maytag's current platforms present most faults in two alternating parts: the display shows an F-half, then an E-half, then repeats. E3 is one of those E-halves, so a washer that seems to show 'E3' is showing you the tail of a longer code — and the head of that code decides the diagnosis. The pairing the searches behind this page name explicitly is F5 followed by E3, and F5E3 is fully documented: Whirlpool's product help titles it 'F5E3 - Error Code: Door Lock', and the Maytag tech sheet defines it as the lid unlock fault — the lock has not moved into the unlocked position, or the lock motor cannot be powered, so the main control cannot determine that the lid is unlocked. On front-load Maytags the same pair reads as a door latch that cannot unlock. The practical picture matches the definition: the cycle ends (or refuses to start), the lid or door stays locked, and the display alternates F5 and E3. Other F-halves can in principle precede an E3 on some model charts, which is why this page does not diagnose E3 alone: watch the display through one full alternation, write down both halves in order, and diagnose the completed pair. If the completed pair is F5E3, everything below applies. If it is a different pair, that pair's own guide governs — the E3 tail is shared, the systems are not.

Applies to: Maytag washers on the current Whirlpool-platform F#E# fault system (top-load and front-load). Older Maytag generations used different code conventions; a genuinely standalone E3 on an older machine is defined only by that model's own chart.
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the E3 code on a Maytag washer?

Wash-media buildup in the lock opening

Detergent, lint and soil paste accumulate around the lock bolt and its opening until the bolt cannot retract fully. The tech sheet's first check is lock interference and buildup for exactly this reason — it is the commonest mechanical cause and the cheapest to cure.

Something pressing or resting on the lid

A heavy item stored on the lid, or laundry forcing against it from inside, can hold the lid against the lock so the bolt cannot withdraw. The control reads a lock that never reached the unlocked position and posts F5E3.

Striker interference or misalignment

The strike on the lid must meet the lock squarely. A strike that has shifted, a lid that has dropped slightly on its hinges, or debris in the meeting point can leave the bolt travelling against resistance it cannot overcome.

The lock assembly wearing out

The lock's small motor and its position sensing tire with age and cycles. A lock that unlocks slowly, clicks repeatedly, or works cold and fails warm is an assembly in decline; F5E3 becomes more frequent until it is permanent.

Harness or connector trouble at the lock

The lock's wiring lives at the cabinet top in a damp, vibrating environment. A corroded or partly seated connector can leave the lock motor unpowered — the tech sheet's second branch, 'or motor cannot be powered' — even though the lock itself is sound.

The control unable to confirm the lock state

The fault also posts when the main control simply cannot determine whether the lid is unlocked. With the lock, striker and harness all proven, that uncertainty points at the control's lock circuit — the last suspect, in the tech sheet's order, not the first.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Read the whole code before anything else: watch the display through at least two full alternations and write the pair down in order. F5 followed by E3 confirms this page; any other F-half sends you to that pair's guide.
  2. Do not force the lid or door. A lock that has not retracted can be permanently damaged by leverage, converting a cleaning job into a lock replacement plus whatever the force bends.
  3. Clear the obvious interference first: remove anything resting on the lid, then inspect the lock opening and the striker for detergent paste, lint or a trapped item, and clean the meeting surfaces.
  4. Try the documented release path: touch POWER to exit the cycle, then touch POWER again to release the lid, and listen at the lock — a motor that strains and clicks is a lock trying against resistance; silence is a lock receiving nothing.
  5. Note the pattern before replacing anything: F5E3 only at the end of cycles, only on the largest loads, or only after a power interruption each point at a different cause above, and the pattern is what a technician will ask for.

How to fix the E3 error code

  1. Clean the lock opening and striker thoroughly and retry: on buildup cases — the majority — the bolt now retracts, the control confirms the unlocked state, and F5E3 clears without a single part.
  2. Cycle power to the control the way Whirlpool's product help prescribes for F5E3: disconnect the washer from power for 5 minutes, reconnect, open and close the lid or door firmly, and start a cycle. A lock that was merely confused about its state re-proves itself on the next lock/unlock cycle.
  3. If the lock strains but cannot retract with a clean, unobstructed opening, replace the lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load) assembly — it is the part the fault names, and it is a screw-and-connector swap at the cabinet top or door frame with the machine unplugged.
  4. If a new lock behaves identically, work the harness between lock and main control for corrosion, pinched sections and partly seated connectors before suspecting the control board; the tech sheet's 'motor cannot be powered' branch is usually found in that run of wire.

The part that usually fails: Lid lock / door lock assembly

The fault is defined by the lock's failure to reach or report the unlocked state, so the assembly is the named part — but clean the lock opening and prove the harness first, because both imitate a dead lock exactly.

How to reset / clear the E3 code

There is no button reset for F5E3. The code clears when a lock/unlock cycle completes with the control able to confirm both states; the 5-minute power disconnect in the fix steps clears a latched display but proves nothing until the lock has actually cycled.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the E3 code keep coming back?

F5E3 that returns after a thorough clean is a lock wearing out on a schedule: note whether the interval between episodes is shrinking, because that trend, not any single episode, is the replacement signal. F5E3 that returns immediately after a lock replacement moves the diagnosis to the striker alignment and the harness — a new lock cannot retract against a strike that meets it crooked, and cannot report through a connector that is not seated.

Can you still use the washer with E3 showing? No. A washer that cannot prove its lid is unlocked will not run, and forcing the lid risks the lock and the lid itself. Finish the clean-and-power-cycle steps first; many F5E3 episodes end there.

How to stop E3 coming back

When to call a pro. Call a technician when the lid or door is locked shut over laundry or standing water and the documented release path fails — gaining entry without breaking the lock is a service procedure — or when a proven lock, striker and harness still leave F5E3 standing, which puts the main control in frame.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Maytag washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Maytag washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
5DSuds detected — Maytag's segmented-display rendering of the Sd suds code.Let the routine finish; Clean Washer cycle empty/hot; dose down, HE only.
A10Compact front-load: long drain; washer is not draining within the allowed time.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
CLControl Lock / Child Lock status on Maytag washers — the panel is locked (not a fault). Maytag also uses CL-family prompts around its cleaning cycle on some models; in both cases it is a status, not an error.Hold the Control Lock key ~3 seconds to release (panel-printed method).
DCNeptune (shown dc): unbalanced load; spin never exceeded 400 RPM during final spin.Redistribute the load evenly and rerun the spin cycle.
DLBravos top-load (shown dL): lid cannot lock.Close the lid firmly and clear the latch; replace the lid lock if faulty.
DRFront-load: door not opened between cycles, code F5E4 also shown as dr.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DRNTop-load display (drn): long drain alert; washer takes too long to drain, same fault as F9E1.Straighten the hose, clean the pump, and keep hose end height and standpipe within manual limits.
DUBravos top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid, wait for the basket to stop, then retry.
E01E01 is the zero-padded E-half (E1) of a Maytag two-part F/E code — incomplete on its own. The pairings owners actually search are F03+E01 = F3E1 (water level / pressure system fault), F06+E01 = F6E1 (serial communication error between the main control/CCU and the motor control/MCU), and F09+E01 = F9E1 (drain pump system error / long drain).Diagnose the completed code: F3E1 = pressure hose and level sensing first; F9E1 = drain path, pump trap and pump; F6E1 = power reset once, then CCU–MCU harness and connectors (power off), then board-level service.
E2Neptune service diagnostic: stuck key; a key was pressed for more than 30 seconds.Check the keypad connection to the control board; replace the console if a key stays stuck.
F5E2Front-load: door cannot be locked after repeated attempts.Clear the latch area; replace the door lock assembly if it repeats.
F5E3Front-load: door cannot be unlocked.Wait for the drum to stop and power-cycle; replace the lock if stuck.
F7E1Motor speed sensing error; control cannot confirm rotation speed.Reduce the load, check the basket spins freely, and power-cycle the washer.
F8E1Long fill or low flow, also shown as Lo FL; washer fills too slowly.Open both valves fully and clean the inlet valve screens.

Codes E3 gets confused with

E01 — E01 is the zero-padded E-half (E1) of a Maytag two-part F/E code — incomplete on its own. The pairings owners actually search are F03+E01 = F3E1 (water level / pressure system fault), F06+E01 = F6E1 (serial communication error between the main control/CCU and the motor control/MCU), and F09+E01 = F9E1 (drain pump system error / long drain). Maytag's Whirlpool-platform displays present a fault in two alternating parts, and the manuals write the parts both ways — Whirlpool's own laundry-centre manual, for example, lists '"F9" followed by "E1" or "F09" followed by "E01" (drain pump system error)'.

CL — Control Lock / Child Lock status on Maytag washers — the panel is locked (not a fault). Maytag also uses CL-family prompts around its cleaning cycle on some models; in both cases it is a status, not an error. CL on a Maytag washer is a status display: most often Control Lock (buttons disabled deliberately), and on some models a prompt/state tied to the Clean Washer cycle.

XL — Not a Maytag fault code — XL is a capacity/model designation (extra-large tub) on Maytag washers, sometimes mistaken for an error when a cycle stops for another reason. Maytag sells XL-capacity models, and the badge gets mistaken for a code.

UL — Unbalanced load — the washer can't balance the load for spin (Maytag top-load). UL is the balance give-up code on Maytag top-loaders: redistribution attempts failed.

Frequently asked questions

What does E3 mean on a Maytag washer when it appears with F5?

Together they are one fault, F5E3: the lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load) has not moved into the unlocked position, or its motor cannot be powered, so the control cannot confirm the lid is unlocked. Whirlpool's product help lists F5E3 as a door lock error, and the Maytag tech sheet's first checks are lock interference and buildup in the lock opening.

Why does my Maytag washer only show E3 and not the full code?

Because the display alternates. Current Maytag fault codes are presented in two parts — the F-half, a pause, the E-half — and a glance catches whichever half is up. Watch through two full alternations and write down both halves in the order shown; the F-half names the system, and on this platform the E3 tail most commonly completes F5E3.

How do I get my Maytag washer lid open when it shows F5E3?

Start with the documented path, not force: remove anything resting on the lid, clean the lock opening and striker, then touch POWER to exit the cycle and POWER again to release the lid. If it still holds, disconnect power for 5 minutes — Whirlpool's product-help step for F5E3 — reconnect and retry. Never lever the lid: a forced lock usually becomes a replaced lock.

Is a Maytag E3 error a motor or temperature problem?

Not on the current platform, and no Maytag source consulted for this page documents a standalone washer E3 with either meaning. On a current Maytag the verifiable reading is the two-part one: E3 is the tail of an F#E# pair, and paired with F5 it is the lid/door unlock fault. A genuinely old model whose own chart lists a standalone E3 follows that chart — the model number, not the bare letters, decides.
