Maytag Washer 5D Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Maytag Washer display showing 5D — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Suds detected — Maytag's segmented-display rendering of the Sd suds code.

On Maytag washers (Whirlpool-built), 5D is the suds code Sd as read on a 7-segment display: the control detected oversudsing and is running its reduction routine. Detergent dose, non-HE product, soft water, or tub build-up — a condition, not a breakdown. Maytag's own product help settles the spelling question in its page title — 'Sd or 5d' — and its text treats Sd, 5d and Sud as one report: excess suds in the washer, with the machine already running a suds reduction routine and the owner's job being to let it continue. What the routine is doing deserves understanding, because owners who interrupt it restart the problem. Foam is not just untidy: a tub full of suds cushions the wash action, defeats rinsing (clothes emerge carrying detergent that was supposed to leave), and can be pushed into places water alone would never reach. So the control pauses the normal programme, adds drain and rinse time, and waits for the foam column to collapse before it will spin properly. The episode length is therefore set by the foam, not by a timer you can negotiate with. Maytag's guidance concentrates on the dose side of the story: HE detergents are sold at several concentration levels — 2x, 4x and 8x formulations sit side by side on shelves — and the correct amount is the detergent maker's dose for your load size and soil level at that concentration, not a fixed capful carried over from a previous bottle. Pre-measured pacs carry the same trap in solid form: the larger pacs are portioned for large or heavily soiled loads, and dropping one into a small everyday load is a measured overdose the machine will report as 5d.

Applies to: Maytag HE washers with segmented displays.
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the 5D code on a Maytag washer?

Too much detergent

HE dose is 1–2 tbsp.

Non-HE detergent

Foam by design.

Tub build-up

Residue re-foams.

A concentration change nobody noticed

Switching from a 2x detergent to a 4x or 8x formula while keeping the same cap habit doubles or quadruples the dose in one shopping trip. A 5d that starts with a new bottle — especially a new brand or a warehouse-club size — belongs to this branch before any other.

Detergent that is HE in name but generous in foam

Maytag's manuals name this case directly: natural, organic or homemade detergents labelled high-efficiency can still generate a high level of suds, because the HE label governs the claim, not the foam chemistry in your water. A household that switched to a gentler product and gained a 5d has usually found this branch.

The second-product habit

A pac in the drum plus liquid in the dispenser, a pre-treat sprayed liberally over a full load, or a booster added 'for luck' stacks surfactants from two sources. Each product was dosed correctly alone; the combination is the overdose, and it is invisible to anyone auditing a single bottle.

Softened water after a softener service

A water softener newly installed, serviced or recharged lowers the dose your loads need. 5d arriving in the weeks after plumbing work on the softener is the machine reporting that the old dose now foams in softer water — the detergent did not change, the water did.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Foam visible? Product HE? Dose honest?
  2. Look before you theorise: foam visible against the door glass or standing in the tub confirms the report outright. Equally useful is the negative — clothes from the finished load that feel slick or slimy were rinsed in suds even if you never saw foam.
  3. Audit the current bottle, not your habits: find its concentration marking (2x, 4x, 8x) and compare the dose you use against that bottle's own directions for your typical load size and soil. Most repeat 5d episodes resolve at this step.
  4. Check for the stacking pattern: pac plus dispenser product, or a regular booster, counts as one combined dose. Simplify to a single product for two weeks and see whether the code follows the simplification away.
  5. Note whether 5d appears on every load or favours a type: small loads (a pac's fixed dose against little laundry), bedding (large items trap foam), or the first load after the machine sat idle (residue re-foaming) each point at a different cause above.

How to fix 5d error code maytag washer?

  1. Let the routine finish; Clean Washer cycle empty/hot; dose down, HE only.
  2. This episode: do nothing clever. Let the suds reduction routine run to its end; Maytag's instruction is to allow the washer to continue. Interrupting and restarting re-presents the same foam to a fresh cycle.
  3. If the control is flashing and waiting for a reselection, the manuals' step is to reselect the cycle using a cold wash temperature and press START/PAUSE once — adding no detergent. Cold water and time are what collapse foam; more product is the one input that makes it worse.
  4. After the episode, run the Clean Washer cycle empty and hot with no detergent to strip the residue layer the outer tub has been storing; on a machine with a long overdosing history, expect the first cleaning cycle itself to foam — that is the stored detergent leaving, and a second cleaning cycle is the correct response.
  5. Going forward, dose by the current bottle's directions for the load in front of you, reserve large pacs for large or heavily soiled loads, and treat any change of detergent brand, concentration or water softener as a reason to re-measure rather than repeat the old capful.

The part that usually fails: None

Condition report — sensor suspicion only if it appears with zero detergent in a clean tub.

How to reset / clear the 5D code

Self-clears when foam falls.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the 5D code keep coming back?

Build-up or dosing. 5d that returns on honestly measured doses has narrowed itself to two remaining stories, and both are testable. The first is residue: a tub that has absorbed months of overdosing re-foams each cycle from its own walls, and the tell is 5d appearing even on a no-detergent rinse — the cure is repeated hot empty cleaning cycles until a rinse runs clear of foam. The second is a change in the water itself, most often a softener that has begun over-softening or a municipal supply change; the tell is the code arriving for the whole household's laundry habits at once after a period of good behaviour. What a returning 5d is not, on Maytag's own documentation, is a parts failure in progress — the suds report names a chemistry condition, and the machine raising it is the sensor system working, not failing.

Can you still use the washer with 5D showing? Yes — let it finish.

How to stop 5D coming back

When to call a pro. Only the zero-detergent case.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Maytag washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Other Maytag washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
A10Compact front-load: long drain; washer is not draining within the allowed time.Clean the drain pump and hose; clear the standpipe.
CLControl Lock / Child Lock status on Maytag washers — the panel is locked (not a fault). Maytag also uses CL-family prompts around its cleaning cycle on some models; in both cases it is a status, not an error.Hold the Control Lock key ~3 seconds to release (panel-printed method).
DCNeptune (shown dc): unbalanced load; spin never exceeded 400 RPM during final spin.Redistribute the load evenly and rerun the spin cycle.
DLBravos top-load (shown dL): lid cannot lock.Close the lid firmly and clear the latch; replace the lid lock if faulty.
DRFront-load: door not opened between cycles, code F5E4 also shown as dr.Open and close the door between cycles; check the door switch if it persists.
DRNTop-load display (drn): long drain alert; washer takes too long to drain, same fault as F9E1.Straighten the hose, clean the pump, and keep hose end height and standpipe within manual limits.
DUBravos top-load (shown dU): lid cannot unlock.Remove items resting on the lid, wait for the basket to stop, then retry.
E01E01 is the zero-padded E-half (E1) of a Maytag two-part F/E code — incomplete on its own. The pairings owners actually search are F03+E01 = F3E1 (water level / pressure system fault), F06+E01 = F6E1 (serial communication error between the main control/CCU and the motor control/MCU), and F09+E01 = F9E1 (drain pump system error / long drain).Diagnose the completed code: F3E1 = pressure hose and level sensing first; F9E1 = drain path, pump trap and pump; F6E1 = power reset once, then CCU–MCU harness and connectors (power off), then board-level service.
E2Neptune service diagnostic: stuck key; a key was pressed for more than 30 seconds.Check the keypad connection to the control board; replace the console if a key stays stuck.
E3On a current Maytag washer, E3 by itself is not a complete code — it is the second half of the two-part F#E# fault display, and the pairing owners are almost always catching is F5 + E3: F5E3, the lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load) unlock fault. The tech sheet's wording: the fault is displayed if the lid lock has not moved into the unlocked position, or its motor cannot be powered.Clean the lock opening and striker thoroughly and retry: on buildup cases — the majority — the bolt now retracts, the control confirms the unlocked state, and F5E3 clears without a single part.
F5E2Front-load: door cannot be locked after repeated attempts.Clear the latch area; replace the door lock assembly if it repeats.
F5E3Front-load: door cannot be unlocked.Wait for the drum to stop and power-cycle; replace the lock if stuck.
F7E1Motor speed sensing error; control cannot confirm rotation speed.Reduce the load, check the basket spins freely, and power-cycle the washer.
F8E1Long fill or low flow, also shown as Lo FL; washer fills too slowly.Open both valves fully and clean the inlet valve screens.

Codes 5D gets confused with

XL — Not a Maytag fault code — XL is a capacity/model designation (extra-large tub) on Maytag washers, sometimes mistaken for an error when a cycle stops for another reason. Maytag sells XL-capacity models, and the badge gets mistaken for a code.

UL — Unbalanced load — the washer can't balance the load for spin (Maytag top-load). UL is the balance give-up code on Maytag top-loaders: redistribution attempts failed.

CL — Control Lock / Child Lock status on Maytag washers — the panel is locked (not a fault). Maytag also uses CL-family prompts around its cleaning cycle on some models; in both cases it is a status, not an error. CL on a Maytag washer is a status display: most often Control Lock (buttons disabled deliberately), and on some models a prompt/state tied to the Clean Washer cycle.

E01 — E01 is the zero-padded E-half (E1) of a Maytag two-part F/E code — incomplete on its own. The pairings owners actually search are F03+E01 = F3E1 (water level / pressure system fault), F06+E01 = F6E1 (serial communication error between the main control/CCU and the motor control/MCU), and F09+E01 = F9E1 (drain pump system error / long drain). Maytag's Whirlpool-platform displays present a fault in two alternating parts, and the manuals write the parts both ways — Whirlpool's own laundry-centre manual, for example, lists '"F9" followed by "E1" or "F09" followed by "E01" (drain pump system error)'.

Frequently asked questions

5D or Sd on a Maytag?

Same suds code — segments blur S into 5.

My Maytag shows 5d but I cannot see any foam — is the sensor wrong?

Usually not. The foam that triggers the report lives in the outer tub and the drain path as much as in the wash drum you can see, and by the time the display catches your eye the routine may already have knocked the visible foam down. Judge by the load: clothes that emerge slick or over-scented were rinsed through suds whether or not you witnessed them.

Can I just cancel the cycle and restart it to clear 5d faster?

That works against the routine rather than with it. The washer is mid-way through a deliberate foam-reduction process; cancelling and restarting presents the same suds to a new cycle and typically earns the same report again. Maytag's instruction is to let it continue — and where the machine asks for a reselection, to choose a cold wash temperature and add no detergent.

Does 5d mean I must switch detergent brands?

Not necessarily — Maytag's guidance is about amount first: follow your current detergent's own dosing for load size and soil, accounting for its concentration. Brand enters the picture only in the manuals' specific case: some natural, organic or homemade products labelled HE still foam heavily, and if measured doses of one of those keep producing 5d, Maytag suggests trying a different HE detergent.

How to fix 5d error code maytag washer?

Start here: Let the routine finish; Clean Washer cycle empty/hot; dose down, HE only. This episode: do nothing clever. Let the suds reduction routine run to its end; Maytag's instruction is to allow the washer to continue. Interrupting and restarting re-presents the same foam to a fresh cycle.

What does error code 5d mean on maytag washer?

Suds detected — Maytag's segmented-display rendering of the Sd suds code. On Maytag washers (Whirlpool-built), 5D is the suds code Sd as read on a 7-segment display: the control detected oversudsing and is running its reduction routine.
