LG Washer OE Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

LG Washer display showing OE — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Drain error — the washer is not draining (Output Error in LG's naming).

OE means LG's control ran the drain pump and the water level did not fall in time. On LG front-loaders the pump filter (behind the lower front flap) is the leading cause, followed by hose/standpipe blockages and the pump itself. The machine typically stops mid-cycle with water in the tub and the door still locked.

Applies to: LG front-load and top-load washers.
Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug before opening the pump filter or any panel, and close both water taps before pulling inlet hoses. LG front-loaders hold water in the sump even when the tub looks empty.

What causes the OE code on a LG washer?

Clogged pump filter

Front-load LGs have a user-cleanable debris filter; it mats with lint and traps coins until drainage times out.

Drain hose kink or standpipe blockage

Including the hose pushed too deep into the standpipe, which siphons/air-locks.

Jammed or failed drain pump

Debris in the impeller or an open pump winding.

Frozen drain line in winter

An unheated laundry space can freeze the hose solid — seasonal OE spikes are a real pattern.

Drain hose outlet installed too high

LG manuals set the end of the drain hose at no more than 96 inches (244 cm) above the bottom of the washer, and warn that draining is increasingly affected once the outlet is raised beyond 66 inches (168 cm). A standpipe or laundry tub rim above that range can make the pump time out even with a clean filter and a clear hose.

No air gap at the standpipe - hose sealed in or pushed in too far

LG manuals say never to create an airtight seal between the hose and the drain with tape or other means, because water can then be siphoned out of the tub, and not to insert the hose end more than 8 inches (20 cm) into the standpipe, which can cause siphoning, odors, or improper draining. The same manuals also set a minimum hose-end height of 29.5 inches (75 cm) on many models, so an outlet fitted too low can siphon as well.

House drain pipe clogged beyond the washer

LG's own OE guide separates the washer from the house plumbing: if the washer drains freely once the hose is disconnected from the drain pipe, the blockage is in the house drain pipe, not in the machine. A slow house line backs water up into the hose until the washer gives up and shows OE.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Open the lower front flap, drain via the small emergency hose into a tray, unscrew and clean the debris filter.
  2. Follow the drain hose for kinks; confirm standpipe placement and that the standpipe itself drains freely.
  3. Listen for the pump on a Drain+Spin: buzzing = jam/load; silence = dead pump or no power to it.
  4. Run LG's washer-versus-house-pipe self-test: unplug the washer first, disconnect the drain hose from the drain pipe, then run a Spin cycle - if water drains properly out of the loose hose, clean the house drain pipe instead of the washer.
  5. Measure the drain setup against LG's manual limits: hose end no higher than 96 inches (244 cm) above the bottom of the washer and ideally no higher than 66 inches (168 cm), inserted no more than 8 inches (20 cm) into the standpipe, secured with the tie strap, and never taped into an airtight seal.
  6. Check the installation clearances LG specifies in its OE guide: at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the back of the washer and the wall and at least 1 inch (2 cm) on each side, on a firm, level surface, so the hose behind the machine is not pinched flat.

How to fix an oe error code on an lg washer?

  1. Clean the filter; remove objects from the pump housing (unplug first).
  2. Clear or re-route the hose; thaw a frozen line gently (never with a flame).
  3. Replace the drain pump if it tests open or its impeller is stripped (Moderate DIY).
  4. Confirm with an empty Drain+Spin that the tub empties briskly.

The part that usually fails: Drain pump

Test for continuity across its terminals; open = replace. A pump that runs but moves no water has a stripped impeller — equally failed.

Lg washer oe error code reset

Power-cycle after clearing; OE clears once a normal drain completes.

LG's standard reset is a power cycle: press Power off, unplug the washer for about 5 minutes, then — with the machine still unplugged — press and hold the Start/Pause button for 5 seconds to drain residual charge from the board. Plug back in and run a test cycle. There is no hidden reset button on LG washers; any code that reappears after this procedure is an active fault the control is still detecting, not a glitch that needs a deeper reset.

Lg washer keeps giving oe error code

OE returning with a clean filter points downstream (house line) or to a pump weakening under full-load head pressure.

Can you still use the washer with OE showing? No — use the emergency drain hose to empty the tub and retrieve laundry; don't force cycles.

How to stop OE coming back

When to call a pro. Pump powered + clear path + no drain = level-sensor or board diagnosis — technician work.

Retrieving stored fault codes on LG washers

LG front-loaders have a test mode used by technicians: with the machine off, a specific three-button combination (commonly Soil Level + Spin Speed + Power held in sequence on many models, and a button-pair hold on others) steps the machine through fill, wash, drain, spin and heater tests while the display shows stored error history. The exact combination differs by model year, so technicians read it from the service manual for the model; if you enter a mode where the tub starts filling or the motor jogs, that is the test mode working — press Power twice to exit.

Other LG washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
1EInlet error — the washer is not filling (1E is the segmented-display rendering of IE).Restore full flow; replace the valve if a solenoid meters open.
AELeak error — water detected by the leak sensor (AquaStop-style base/float detection on LG models that have it).Repair the actual leak (washers, clamps, gasket, hose).
CECurrent error; the motor control component is damaged.LG states this cannot be fixed by basic troubleshooting; request service.
CLChild Lock is ON — not an error. The control panel is locked on purpose.Deactivate: hold the Child Lock button (or the two buttons marked with the lock icon — often Temp + Spin or the dedicated button) for about 3 seconds until CL disappears. The exact pairing is printed on your panel.
DEDoor error — the door is open or the door lock is not engaging/reporting.Replace the door lock assembly if the door latches mechanically but dE persists (Moderate DIY — it mounts behind the gasket lip).
E1Drainage error in LG's group listing; the washer is struggling to drain water properly.Clean the drain pump filter and confirm the drain hose is not blocked.
E3Drain motor error; there is an issue with the operation of the drain motor.Unplug, reconnect and retry; thaw the tub and drain hose if frozen.
E6Motor and drum rotation error in LG's group listing; drum or motor faces resistance.Remove tangled or heavy items, spread the load evenly, restart the cycle.
E7Stacking switch error on SideKick pedestal washers; switch not working or unit misinstalled.Align the SideKick correctly and verify the stacking switch sits properly.
FEFill error / overflow — the washer has overfilled or the fill ran abnormally long (water level too high).Replace a passing inlet valve.
FFFreeze failure; prolonged cold weather has frozen the inlet or drain hose.Thaw the tub, drain hose, inlet hoses and taps with warm water.
HEHeating error — the washer's heater circuit is not performing (on LG washers with a built-in heater).Replace an open element; descale-recoverable elements are the minority — burnt is burnt.
IEInlet error — the washer is not filling with water properly (Water Inlet Error).Restore flow (taps/hoses/screens).
LCDoor or lid lock error in LG's group listing; door is not closing or locking.Clear the seal, close until it clicks; replace lock assembly if it persists.

Codes OE gets confused with

AE — Leak error — water detected by the leak sensor (AquaStop-style base/float detection on LG models that have it). AE means the washer's leak detection has tripped: water where it shouldn't be — typically collected in the base — or a float/sensor reporting leakage.

IE — Inlet error — the washer is not filling with water properly (Water Inlet Error). IE (also read as 1E on segmented displays — they are the same code) means the control called for water and the level did not rise as expected.

PE — Pressure (water level) sensor error — the level sensor is faulty or its signal is implausible. PE reports a fault in the pressure switch/level sensor system: the control cannot get a believable water-level reading.

DE — Door error — the door is open or the door lock is not engaging/reporting. dE means LG's control cannot confirm the door is closed and locked.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the filter on an LG front-loader?

Behind the small flap at the bottom front, with a mini drain hose beside it. Drain through the hose first, then unscrew the filter.

How long does the washer try to drain before it shows OE?

On LG top-load washers, LG says the OE code displays if the washer is unable to drain the water for 13 minutes. LG's top-load guide then has you inspect the hose and run a Spin Only cycle to test whether it will drain.

How do I safely thaw a frozen drain hose or pump?

LG directs you to pour warm water at 122-140 degrees F (50-60 degrees C) into the drum, close the door, and wait 1-2 hours for the drain pump to thaw, and to wrap a frozen drain hose with a towel soaked in warm water. Do not use boiling water - LG warns it can cause burns.

How far into the standpipe should the drain hose go?

No more than 8 inches (20 cm), per LG washer manuals, and the connection must not be sealed airtight. Pushing the hose in farther, or taping it sealed, can cause siphoning, odors, and improper draining.
