LG Washer IE Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

LG Washer display showing IE — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Inlet error — the washer is not filling with water properly (Water Inlet Error).

IE (also read as 1E on segmented displays — they are the same code) means the control called for water and the level did not rise as expected. LG's version of the universal fill fault: taps, hoses, inlet screens, valve, and finally the level sensor, in that order. IE is best understood as a timed fill verdict with three different defendants. The control opens the inlet valve and waits for the water level to reach an adequate point within a set period; failure can mean no water was offered (taps, hoses, freezing, screens), water was offered but taken away again (a low, displaced, or submerged drain hose siphoning the fill straight out), or water arrived and stayed but was never registered (the level sensor and its air hose). LG's published IE checks walk exactly that logic — supply and hose condition first, frozen-supply thawing, filter cleaning, and drain-hose position — and only after those are exhausted does LG direct you to a possible water-supply valve malfunction and a repair request. Following that order keeps a ten-minute hose correction from becoming an unnecessary valve replacement.

Applies to: LG front-load and top-load washers.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Unplug before opening the pump filter or any panel, and close both water taps before pulling inlet hoses. LG front-loaders hold water in the sump even when the tub looks empty.

What causes the IE code on a LG washer?

Taps off/partly open or hoses kinked

Most common after moves or plumbing work.

Clogged inlet screens

Sediment throttles the fill until it times out.

Inlet valve failure

A solenoid gone open-circuit or a mechanically stuck valve.

Level sensor/hose fault

Water arrives but the control doesn't believe it.

Fill water draining straight out again through a low or submerged drain hose

Not every IE is a supply failure: LG's front-load IE guide lists a drain hose positioned too low as a cause, because fill water then drains out as fast as it enters, and a drain hose end submerged in water does the same by siphoning. The inlet valve can be flowing correctly the whole time while the level never rises to the point the control expects. A washer that audibly fills, with water visibly leaving down the drain hose during fill, belongs to this branch, not the valve branch.

Swapped or partly connected hot and cold inlet hoses

LG's IE guide has you verify that the cold hose (blue) and the hot hose (orange or red) are connected to the correct valves. A hose left disconnected after a move, cross-connected, or seated on the wrong inlet can leave the temperature the control calls for effectively unsupplied, or reduce flow enough on the called-for side that the fill times out. IE that began immediately after installation, a move, or plumbing work should always trigger this connection check before screens or valves are condemned.

Leak-limiting or flood-safe hoses tripping and throttling the fill

LG washer manuals warn that the use of hoses designed to limit leaks is not recommended, because leak-limiting hoses can trip falsely and prevent the washer from filling. A sudden IE on a machine whose taps, screens, and valve all test sound — particularly after the washer was moved, the hoses were replaced, or a small weep occurred at a connection — fits this pattern: the hose's own shut-off has partly or fully closed and is starving the inlet exactly as a closed tap would.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Confirm taps fully open; check hose runs.
  2. Clean the inlet screens at the valve (taps off first).
  3. Verify tap flow into a bucket to split house-side from machine-side.
  4. Watch and listen through one complete fill attempt before disconnecting anything: water audibly entering and then stopping early suggests sensing or siphoning, water entering in a thin trickle suggests screens or pressure, and complete silence suggests a closed tap, a frozen or disconnected hose, or a valve that is not opening at all — each sound leads to a different first fix.
  5. During that fill attempt, check the drain side at the same time: confirm the drain hose has not popped out of its rear holder (LG warns a displaced holder lets the hose sit lower than the water level, so the tub can never fill), that the hose end is not submerged in standing water in the standpipe or tub, and that no water is running straight out of the drain while the washer fills.
  6. Bucket-test each tap separately with its hose disconnected, hot and cold in turn: strong flow from both taps clears the house side and the hoses, weak flow from one tap only isolates that tap, its hose, or a leak-limiting hose on that side, and no flow in winter points to freezing — LG directs thawing a frozen hose with warm water of 50 degrees C or lower, never boiling water.
  7. Clean the inlet filters the LG way and inspect them as evidence: turn the supply off, disconnect the hose, pull the filter out with fingers or pliers, and scrub away rust, sand, or stones with a toothbrush, then refit the filter before reconnecting. Heavy grit in the filter after recent plumbing work or well maintenance explains a sudden IE and predicts it will recur until the supply settles.

How to fix lg washer error code ie?

  1. Restore flow (taps/hoses/screens).
  2. Meter the valve solenoids; replace the valve assembly if one is open.
  3. Inspect the level-sensor air hose for water/splits; replace the sensor if the hose is sound and IE persists.
  4. Correct any drain-hose siphon you found: refit the drain hose firmly into its rear fixing holder so its height stays above the tub water level as LG specifies, lift a submerged hose end out of standing water, and retest a fill — a siphon-cured IE needs no inlet parts at all.
  5. Replace leak-limiting hoses with standard supply hoses if a tripped hose is throttling the fill, since LG does not recommend that hose type for its washers; prove the diagnosis first by confirming strong tap flow into a bucket through a standard hose or a direct connection where fittings allow.
  6. If the hoses were cross-connected or a hose was left off after a move, connect cold (blue) to the cold inlet and hot (orange or red) to the hot inlet as LG labels them, hand-tighten plus a careful final snug, check both ends for weeping under pressure, and run a short fill test before pushing the washer back into place.

The part that usually fails: Water inlet valve assembly

Compare solenoid continuity readings; an open solenoid against a normal twin is the failure.

Lg washer ie error code reset

Power-cycle 5 minutes; IE clears when a normal fill registers.

LG's standard reset is a power cycle: press Power off, unplug the washer for about 5 minutes, then — with the machine still unplugged — press and hold the Start/Pause button for 5 seconds to drain residual charge from the board. Plug back in and run a test cycle. There is no hidden reset button on LG washers; any code that reappears after this procedure is an active fault the control is still detecting, not a glitch that needs a deeper reset.

Why does the IE code keep coming back?

Returning IE tracks house pressure sag (busy times) or a sensor hose slowly taking water. The pattern of a returning IE is usually its diagnosis. IE only at busy household times, or only when another large draw is running, tracks house pressure sag rather than the machine. IE only on one temperature selection tracks the tap, hose, screen, or solenoid for that side alone. IE that began the day the washer was moved, installed, or given new hoses tracks connections, hose routing, and drain-hose height. And IE that arrives with winter and leaves with the thaw is frozen plumbing, which no part replacement will prevent — insulating the supply run or the laundry space is the actual fix, with LG's warm-water thaw as the recovery method each time it happens.

Can you still use the washer with IE showing? No cycles until it fills; no harm in leaving it off meanwhile.

How to stop IE coming back

When to call a pro. Supply and valve proven + IE persists = sensor/board diagnosis.

Retrieving stored fault codes on LG washers

LG front-loaders have a test mode used by technicians: with the machine off, a specific three-button combination (commonly Soil Level + Spin Speed + Power held in sequence on many models, and a button-pair hold on others) steps the machine through fill, wash, drain, spin and heater tests while the display shows stored error history. The exact combination differs by model year, so technicians read it from the service manual for the model; if you enter a mode where the tub starts filling or the motor jogs, that is the test mode working — press Power twice to exit.

Other LG washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
1EInlet error — the washer is not filling (1E is the segmented-display rendering of IE).Restore full flow; replace the valve if a solenoid meters open.
AELeak error — water detected by the leak sensor (AquaStop-style base/float detection on LG models that have it).Repair the actual leak (washers, clamps, gasket, hose).
CECurrent error; the motor control component is damaged.LG states this cannot be fixed by basic troubleshooting; request service.
CLChild Lock is ON — not an error. The control panel is locked on purpose.Deactivate: hold the Child Lock button (or the two buttons marked with the lock icon — often Temp + Spin or the dedicated button) for about 3 seconds until CL disappears. The exact pairing is printed on your panel.
DEDoor error — the door is open or the door lock is not engaging/reporting.Replace the door lock assembly if the door latches mechanically but dE persists (Moderate DIY — it mounts behind the gasket lip).
E1Drainage error in LG's group listing; the washer is struggling to drain water properly.Clean the drain pump filter and confirm the drain hose is not blocked.
E3Drain motor error; there is an issue with the operation of the drain motor.Unplug, reconnect and retry; thaw the tub and drain hose if frozen.
E6Motor and drum rotation error in LG's group listing; drum or motor faces resistance.Remove tangled or heavy items, spread the load evenly, restart the cycle.
E7Stacking switch error on SideKick pedestal washers; switch not working or unit misinstalled.Align the SideKick correctly and verify the stacking switch sits properly.
FEFill error / overflow — the washer has overfilled or the fill ran abnormally long (water level too high).Replace a passing inlet valve.
FFFreeze failure; prolonged cold weather has frozen the inlet or drain hose.Thaw the tub, drain hose, inlet hoses and taps with warm water.
HEHeating error — the washer's heater circuit is not performing (on LG washers with a built-in heater).Replace an open element; descale-recoverable elements are the minority — burnt is burnt.
LCDoor or lid lock error in LG's group listing; door is not closing or locking.Clear the seal, close until it clicks; replace lock assembly if it persists.
LELocked motor error — the washer's direct-drive motor cannot rotate (or the control can't confirm it is rotating).Reduce load size; wash bulky items one at a time with a couple of towels for balance.

Codes IE gets confused with

1E — Inlet error — the washer is not filling (1E is the segmented-display rendering of IE). 1E and IE are the same LG fault: the washer called for water and the fill did not register in time.

CL — Child Lock is ON — not an error. The control panel is locked on purpose. CL means LG's Child Lock feature is active: the panel buttons are disabled (except Power on many models) so children can't change or start cycles.

FE — Fill error / overflow — the washer has overfilled or the fill ran abnormally long (water level too high). FE is LG's overfill-side fill code (the mirror of IE): the level rose past the expected maximum, or kept rising when it shouldn't.

OE — Drain error — the washer is not draining (Output Error in LG's naming). OE means LG's control ran the drain pump and the water level did not fall in time.

Frequently asked questions

Is IE the same as 1E on LG washers?

Yes — 1E is how IE renders on some segmented displays. Same inlet fault, same fixes.

Why does my LG fill with water and still show IE?

Because IE judges the level reached, not whether water flowed at all. LG's own IE guidance covers this case: if the drain hose sits too low, has come out of its fixing holder, or its end is submerged, fill water drains or siphons away as it enters, so the tub never reaches the expected level even though the inlet is working. The other version of the same puzzle is a level-sensor or air-hose fault, where the water is present but the control does not register it — the drain-hose checks come first because they are free and LG lists them explicitly.

Can cold weather cause IE on an LG washer?

Yes — LG lists a frozen water supply hose among the IE causes and gives a specific thaw method. Disconnect the supply hose and open the faucet to check whether water comes out at all; if the faucet is frozen, wrap it in a towel soaked in hot water for about 5 minutes, and thaw the disconnected hose with warm water of 50 degrees C or lower. Reconnect only once the hose is completely free of ice, and never use boiling water, which LG warns against for safety. An IE that appears only in a cold snap in an unheated laundry space is this fault until proven otherwise.

How do I clean the inlet filter on an LG washer for IE?

LG's procedure is: turn off the water supply first, disconnect the inlet hose from the back of the washer, find the small filter inside the inlet, and pull it out using your fingers or pliers. Scrub away foreign material such as rust, sand, or grit with a toothbrush, then make sure the filter is reassembled before reconnecting the hose — LG emphasises refitting it, because running without the filter lets the same debris reach and jam the inlet valve itself. Restore the supply, check for leaks, and test a fill.
