LG Washer DE1 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

LG Washer display showing dE1 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Door error (variant 1) — the door is not closed properly (LG's own wording). The washer cannot confirm the door is fully shut, so it will not start or it pauses.

LG splits its front-load door family by which step failed, and dE1 is the first step: the door is not closed properly. LG's guidance for dE1 is deliberately simple — open the door and re-close it and see if the code clears — because the usual story is physical: laundry caught between the door glass and the gasket, a bulky load pushing the door out, or a door that was pushed at its top or bottom edge instead of at the handle, where the lock sits. dE1 is not LG's code for a failed lock; that later step — door closed but not locked — is dE2. If dE1 survives a proper re-close with a clear seal, LG's route is to close the house water taps, unplug the washer and request a repair service, because the remaining suspects (a sagging or damaged door, a torn gasket, the lock mechanism itself) are inspection items, not settings. LG's owner manuals frame dE1 slightly differently from its help pages, and the two framings agree: the manual troubleshooting table groups [dE], [dE1] and [dE2] under one symptom — 'The door is not secured' — with one instruction: 'Close and secure the door. If the message keeps appearing, unplug the power cord and call for service.' The help-page split (dE1 = not closed properly, dE2 = closed but not locked) is the same instruction with the steps separated, so a manual that shows you only the grouped version has not contradicted this page. dE1 also lives a second life outside front-load doors: on LG's SideKick pedestal washer and Signature mini washer, dE1 reports that the drawer or lid is not secured, with the same close-and-secure remedy (the WD300CA manual's answer: the drawer or lid is not secured — close and secure it properly; if the message persists, unplug the power cord and contact customer service). Same code, same logic, smaller door.

Applies to: LG front-load washers that split door faults into dE1/dE2 (the same dE1 wording is used for the SideKick/pedestal drawer and mini-washer lid: the drawer or lid is not secured).
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Unplug before opening the pump filter or any panel, and close both water taps before pulling inlet hoses. LG front-loaders hold water in the sump even when the tub looks empty.

What causes the dE1 code on a LG washer?

Laundry caught between the door glass and the gasket

LG's first check: an item protruding into the seal line stops the door reaching its closed position even though it looks shut.

Door pushed closed at the wrong point

The lock sits near the handle; LG instructs pushing the centre of the door handle — pushing the top or bottom edge can leave the latch side unseated.

Door sag

LG names sag from long-term use (and from loads hung on the door) as a reason the door may not close; the door has to be lifted as it is closed, which is a wear finding, not a technique.

Damaged or torn door gasket

A gasket that is torn or has separated can hold the door off its seat; LG routes gasket damage to service.

Door sag caused by how the door has been treated

LG UK is unusually specific about sag's origins: pushing the top of the door to close it, or hanging a duvet or clothes on the door for a long period, can make the door sag. A dE1 household that air-dries laundry over the open door has its cause in the habit, and the code will keep returning until the door itself is dealt with.

A door that was refitted and never quite tightened

LG's door guidance notes that a door which has been removed and reversed, or replaced, may not have been tightened properly, and can also work loose if items are laid across it. A dE1 that dates from a door reversal or a hinge-side swap belongs here: the closure geometry changed, and the lock is simply reporting it.

A gasket torn and separated from its seat

LG UK lists this as a dE-family cause in its own right: if the door gasket is torn and separated, a dE error may occur. The gasket is part of the door's closing stack — a section pulled out of its channel adds thickness exactly where the latch needs the door to travel furthest.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Push all laundry fully inside the drum — for large items like blankets, LG advises pushing them in further so the door can close — then re-close the door and check whether dE1 clears.
  2. Close the door by pressing the centre of the door handle from the front, as LG instructs, rather than pushing a corner of the door.
  3. Sight along the door for sag; if the door only closes when lifted, LG recommends a service check rather than repeated lifting.
  4. Run your eye and hand around the gasket for tears or a section that has pulled away from its seat.
  5. Run LG's sag test: if the door closes properly only when you lift it as you shut it, the finding is sag — LG recommends a service check for a sagging door rather than a lifetime of lifting it.
  6. Check the gasket all the way around for a torn section or a section that has separated from its channel, especially along the latch side where closure travel is tightest.
  7. Ask the household's historian: has the door been reversed, removed, replaced, or used as a drying rack? dE1 with that history is a geometry problem with a known birthday.
  8. On a SideKick or mini washer showing dE1, check the drawer/lid itself is fully pushed home and secured — the code's meaning there is the drawer not secured, and the drum door is not involved at all.

How to fix de1 error code lg washer?

  1. Open and re-close the door (LG's published dE1 remedy); dE1 caused by trapped laundry or a lazy close clears at this step and needs no parts.
  2. If dE1 persists after a proper re-close with a clear seal: close the house water taps and unplug the washer, as LG instructs, and request a repair service — door, gasket or lock-mechanism damage is diagnosed in person.
  3. LG's manual remedy, complete: close and secure the door; if the message keeps appearing, unplug the power cord and call for service. Note the manual does not insert a lock replacement between those two steps — persistent dE1 is escalated, not part-swapped.
  4. Push bulky items further into the drum before closing (LG's WashTower wording for blankets), and close with pressure at the centre of the handle, where LG points out the lock is located.
  5. Gasket torn or separated: register a service request — LG UK's instruction for that finding — rather than reseating torn rubber and hoping the code forgets.

The part that usually fails: None for the common dE1

LG treats dE1 as a closure report, not a parts diagnosis. Parts enter the story only when a technician finds door, gasket or lock-mechanism damage behind a persistent dE1.

How to reset / clear the dE1 code

No separate reset exists for dE1: open and re-close the door and the code clears as soon as the washer registers a properly closed door. A dE1 that returns on a correctly closed door is, by LG's guidance, a service case rather than a reset case.

LG's standard reset is a power cycle: press Power off, unplug the washer for about 5 minutes, then — with the machine still unplugged — press and hold the Start/Pause button for 5 seconds to drain residual charge from the board. Plug back in and run a test cycle. There is no hidden reset button on LG washers; any code that reappears after this procedure is an active fault the control is still detecting, not a glitch that needs a deeper reset.

Why does the dE1 code keep coming back?

dE1 that starts appearing as a load grows is the load pushing the door outward — split bulky loads. dE1 on empty, gentle closes with a visibly sagging door is wear progressing; expect it to harden into a no-start. dE1's return pattern is its diagnosis. Returning only with blankets and duvets = load geometry; push items further in or split the load. Returning on every close, with the door needing a lift = sag progressing, and it will not improve — book the service check LG recommends while the door still closes at all. Returning immediately after door reversal, gasket work or a move = geometry disturbed by that work; say so when you call, because it points the visit at the door stack rather than the lock. A dE1 that never returns after one proper re-close was the trapped-laundry classic and needs no further thought.

Can you still use the washer with dE1 showing? No — the washer is refusing to run with a door it cannot confirm is shut. Do not tape, wedge or defeat the door switch to get a cycle through.

How to stop dE1 coming back

When to call a pro. As soon as dE1 survives LG's re-close step with the seal clear — and immediately if the door is damaged, the gasket is torn, or the door must be lifted to close. LG's own instruction at that point is taps closed, unplugged, repair service requested.

Retrieving stored fault codes on LG washers

LG front-loaders have a test mode used by technicians: with the machine off, a specific three-button combination (commonly Soil Level + Spin Speed + Power held in sequence on many models, and a button-pair hold on others) steps the machine through fill, wash, drain, spin and heater tests while the display shows stored error history. The exact combination differs by model year, so technicians read it from the service manual for the model; if you enter a mode where the tub starts filling or the motor jogs, that is the test mode working — press Power twice to exit.

Other LG washer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
1EInlet error — the washer is not filling (1E is the segmented-display rendering of IE).Restore full flow; replace the valve if a solenoid meters open.
AETwo different LG faults share this code, by platform. On LG top-load washers AE is a rotation error: the gears responsible for rotating the drum cannot operate properly. On LG front-load washers (global/EU manuals) AE is a water leakage error: water leaks — call for service.TOP-LOAD: remove the trapped object with a pair of tweezers (LG's published fix, verbatim in method). Run the machine and confirm normal, quiet rotation.
CECurrent error; the motor control component is damaged.LG states this cannot be fixed by basic troubleshooting; request service.
CLChild Lock is ON — not an error. The control panel is locked on purpose.Deactivate: hold the Child Lock button (or the two buttons marked with the lock icon — often Temp + Spin or the dedicated button) for about 3 seconds until CL disappears. The exact pairing is printed on your panel.
DEDoor error — the washer door was unable to lock (LG US wording). The door is open, not fully closed, or the lock has not engaged/reported.If a dE-family code is showing, LG's remedy is to pull the door open with the handle and close it again firmly; once the door is properly closed, the code clears and the washer resumes.
E1Drainage error in LG's group listing; the washer is struggling to drain water properly.Clean the drain pump filter and confirm the drain hose is not blocked.
E3Drain motor error; there is an issue with the operation of the drain motor.Unplug, reconnect and retry; thaw the tub and drain hose if frozen.
E6Motor and drum rotation error in LG's group listing; drum or motor faces resistance.Remove tangled or heavy items, spread the load evenly, restart the cycle.
E7Stacking switch error on SideKick pedestal washers; switch not working or unit misinstalled.Align the SideKick correctly and verify the stacking switch sits properly.
FEOverflow error — the water level is too high (LG's manuals: 'Water level is too high due to a faulty water valve'; LG's top-load list: the washer has detected an overfilled tub).Faulty-valve story (level too high, water clear, dosing correct): follow the manual exactly — close the water faucets, unplug the washer, and call for service. A passing valve is replaced, not adjusted.
FFFreeze failure; prolonged cold weather has frozen the inlet or drain hose.Thaw the tub, drain hose, inlet hoses and taps with warm water.
HEHeating error — the washer's heater circuit is not performing (on LG washers with a built-in heater).Replace an open element; descale-recoverable elements are the minority — burnt is burnt.
IEInlet error — the washer is not filling with water properly (Water Inlet Error).Restore flow (taps/hoses/screens).
LCDoor or lid lock error in LG's group listing; door is not closing or locking.Clear the seal, close until it clicks; replace lock assembly if it persists.

Codes dE1 gets confused with

DE — Door error — the washer door was unable to lock (LG US wording). The door is open, not fully closed, or the lock has not engaged/reported. dE means LG's control cannot confirm the door is closed and locked, so the washer won't start or it pauses.

AE — Two different LG faults share this code, by platform. On LG top-load washers AE is a rotation error: the gears responsible for rotating the drum cannot operate properly. On LG front-load washers (global/EU manuals) AE is a water leakage error: water leaks — call for service. AE is the LG washer code where reading a single meaning off the internet does real damage, because LG itself publishes two.

tE — Temperature sensor error — LG's front-load manuals head this code 'Temperature Sensor Error' and give its cause, in one word pair, as a control error; LG's top-load list describes a problem with the temperature sensor inside the tub. tE is the code LG's documentation treats most tersely, and this page follows LG rather than the internet's expanded version of it.

dE2 — Door error (variant 2) — the door is closed, but not locked (LG's own wording). The door reached its shut position, but the lock did not engage. dE2 completes LG's door family (dE, dE1, dE2) at the step after dE1: LG defines dE1 as the door not closed properly and dE2 as the door closed but not locked.

Frequently asked questions

Is dE1 different from dE?

Yes, by one step: dE is the family's general door error (LG US: the door was unable to lock), while dE1 states the earlier finding — the door is not closed properly. Re-closing is the whole first fix for dE1.

How do I fix the DE1 error code on my LG washer?

Follow LG's two steps in order: open the door, clear anything caught between the door glass and the gasket, and re-close it properly — dE1 means the door is not closed properly, and this clears the usual case. If the message keeps appearing after a correct close, LG's manual instruction is to unplug the power cord and call for service.

My LG washer shows error code DE1 but the door looks closed — why won't it start?

Because dE1 is the washer reporting that the door is not closed properly, which is about the latch side reaching its seat, not about the door looking shut from across the room. The usual gap-makers are laundry caught at the gasket, a door pushed at its top or bottom edge instead of the handle centre, and early sag. Re-close using the handle centre after clearing the seal line.

Is DE1 the same as DE2 on an LG washer?

No — LG separates them by one step. dE1: the door is not closed properly (fix: open and re-close). dE2: the door is closed, but not locked (fix: turn the washer off, pull the door open, restart the cycle, then close the door firmly). Both escalate to service if they persist.

Can DE1 appear on an LG washer dryer combo or a SideKick drawer?

Yes. LG uses dE1 for the pedestal SideKick drawer and the mini washer's lid as well: there it means the drawer or lid is not secured. Close and secure it properly; if the message persists, unplug the power cord and contact customer service, per the mini washer's manual.

Why does DE1 keep coming back even after I re-close the door firmly?

A dE1 that survives correct re-closing with a clear seal has left the closure branch: LG's candidates are door-side — sag, a door left loose after removal or reversal, a torn or separated gasket, or lock-mechanism damage. That is why LG's manual ends persistent dE1 at 'unplug the power cord and call for service' rather than at a part you can order.

How to fix de1 error code lg washer?

Start here: Open and re-close the door (LG's published dE1 remedy); dE1 caused by trapped laundry or a lazy close clears at this step and needs no parts. If dE1 persists after a proper re-close with a clear seal: close the house water taps and unplug the washer, as LG instructs, and request a repair service — door, gasket or lock-mechanism damage is diagnosed in person.
