LG Refrigerator Error Codes List: Every Code Explained

LG Refrigerator display showing full error code list — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Every LG refrigerator error code we could verify against LG's own documentation — what it means, what usually causes it, and the first fix to try — in one table. Codes differ between model series, so treat your model's tech sheet as the final word.

Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug before removing the rear machine cover. The main PCB carries mains voltage and the inverter output to the compressor is high-voltage DC/AC — board-level testing is technician work. Never open the sealed refrigerant system.

How to read and retrieve error codes on LG refrigerators

LG refrigerators have a test mode on the main board (a test button on the PCB steps through test 1/2/3 states: compressor and fans forced on, then defrost forced, then display test) which technicians use together with the blink pattern of the board's LED — on inverter models the LED blink count on the main PCB is itself a fault code (this is where '6 blinks' style codes come from). The board sits under the rear cover; treat it as live mains circuitry.

A code that is not in this table? Manufacturers add and retire codes between model years, and some displays abbreviate two-part codes. If your code is missing, note the full display exactly as shown (photograph it), check the tech sheet stored inside the machine, and search this site by the symptom — the fault family is usually identifiable from what the machine was doing when the code appeared.

How to reset / clear error codes on LG refrigerators

LG refrigerator error codes (the Er family) clear with a power reset: unplug for about 5 minutes (or hold the control's reset where fitted) and restore power. Fan and sensor codes that return after the reset are active faults — the board re-tests fans and thermistors continuously. Note that after any reset the cabinet needs several hours to pull temperatures back down, so judge the result by whether the code returns, not by instant cooling.

How to diagnose any LG refrigerator code

Work the problem in this order: (1) record the code exactly — on segment displays, note which segments are lit, because refrigerator codes are often shown as lit/unlit segment patterns rather than letters; (2) check the temperatures with a thermometer, not the display, and note which compartment is wrong — fridge codes split by compartment and system (fan, defrost, sensor, ice maker); (3) run the external checks: door seals closing fully, vents inside the compartments unblocked by food, condenser area clean, and the machine level so doors self-close; (4) force the brand's diagnostic/defrost mode if the code family points that way, and listen — a fan fault you can hear (or not hear) settles the question faster than a meter; (5) test sensors and fans before condemning a control board, and give any defrost-related fix a full 24 hours before judging it. Food safety first: if the fridge compartment is above 40°F / 4°C for more than a few hours, perishables are at risk regardless of the code.

The most searched LG refrigerator codes, in detail

CF — Condenser fan error

CF (displayed Er CF / ER CF) reports the condenser fan — the fan that blows air over the condenser coils and compressor at the bottom rear of the fridge. Without it the compressor overheats, cooling suffers (especially in warm rooms), and run times stretch. Debris, a failed fan motor, or frost/obstruction — plus the simple possibility that the fridge was just levelled onto something blocking the fan — are the causes.

Most likely cause: Fan motor failure — The small condenser fan motor wears out.

First check: Pull the fridge out, remove the lower rear cover (unplug first), and inspect the fan area: spin the blades by hand — they should turn freely.

If it keeps coming back: CF returning after a fan change points to the board's fan output or the harness — technician diagnosis.

CL — Not an error on LG refrigerators

Owners search 'LG refrigerator CL error' after seeing CL on a display or conflating their washer/dryer knowledge with the fridge. LG refrigerators report faults in the Er format (Er + two letters). A fridge panel showing letters that look like CL is typically showing a temperature/setting state, a demo/showroom mode artefact, or a partially-lit display segment fault. If the fridge is cooling normally, there is no CL fault to fix; if it isn't cooling, the real diagnosis runs through the Er code list and basic temperature checks.

Most likely cause: Cross-appliance confusion — CL = Child Lock on LG washers/dryers; the fridge has no CL fault code.

First check: Is the fridge actually cooling? Thermometer in both compartments for a few hours — real temperatures settle all arguments.

If it keeps coming back: If the 'CL' reading recurs with a genuinely warm fridge, capture the full display (photo) — the real code is there; it's just being misread.

DH — Defrost heater error

DH (Er dH) reports a defrost fault: the evaporator's defrost heater circuit isn't doing its job, so frost accumulates on the coil cycle after cycle. The slow-motion symptoms precede the code: freezer rear panel frosting over, fan noises (blades nicking ice), temperatures creeping up over one to three weeks. The heater itself, its thermal fuse, the defrost sensor and the board's defrost output are the circuit.

Most likely cause: Defrost heater failure — The heater element opens with age/thermal cycling.

First check: Confirm the frost pattern: a uniformly frosted-over evaporator/rear panel (vs. a corner-only pattern, which suggests refrigerant issues instead).

If it keeps coming back: DH returning within a month means a circuit member was missed (often the sensor drifting) or the board's defrost timing is at fault.

FF — Freezer fan error

FF (Er FF) reports the freezer fan: it circulates air over the evaporator and distributes cold to the freezer (and, via ducts, the ice maker and fridge). When it stalls — frost-jammed or electrically dead — the freezer warms unevenly, frost patterns go strange, and eventually both compartments suffer. Defrost problems upstream (which grow the frost that jams the fan) are part of this diagnosis, not a separate story.

Most likely cause: Frost jamming the blades — The fan's ticking/clicking before failure is ice contact; silence follows when it stalls.

First check: Hold the freezer door switch in and listen for the fan while the compressor runs.

If it keeps coming back: FF + re-frosting within weeks = defrost system (heater, sensor, fuse) — the fan is the victim.

IF — Ice-maker fan error

IF (Er IF, often confused with 1F — they are related but distinct renderings on LG's platform) reports the ice-maker fan: the fan that pushes freezer air to the ice maker (in-door ice systems especially). When it fails, ice production slows or stops and the ice room warms, while main compartments may stay near-normal. Frost jamming from door-seal air leaks is a leading cause, as with all fridge fan faults.

Most likely cause: Frost-jammed fan — Moist air from a leaking door seal freezes at the fan.

First check: Listen for the ice fan near the ice room with the door switch held in.

If it keeps coming back: IF returning after defrost means moist air is still entering (gasket/door alignment) or the fan is intermittently dying.

1F — Ice-maker fan error (Er 1F/IF family)

1F is the ice-fan fault as grouped in LG's motor/drive family (the same fault many displays render Er IF): the ice-maker fan isn't moving air to the ice room. Ice production fades first; frost jamming from door-seal leaks and the fan motor itself are the causes, in that order.

Most likely cause: Frost-jammed fan — Moist air ingress freezes at the fan.

First check: Listen for the ice fan with the door switch held in.

If it keeps coming back: Returning 1F after defrost = continuing air leak or an intermittently dying fan.

Less common and model-specific codes

Search data shows owners also meet these codes on LG refrigerators: 1FE, 22, CFE, CLE, CO, DE, DF, DHF, DS, E15, EE, F1E1, GF, ICE, LE, LF, RS, SD, SF, SS, TRS010. They are not part of the core code list LG publishes for most models — several are series-specific, abbreviated display readings, or codes carried over from a sister platform — so we do not publish meanings for them rather than guess. Treat them by symptom: note what the machine was doing when the code appeared (filling, draining, heating, spinning), run one full power cycle (5 minutes off), and if the code returns, match the symptom to the closest documented family in the table above and check the tech sheet stored inside your machine for the model-specific definition.
