LG Dryer H5 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

LG Dryer display showing H5 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Not an LG dryer error code. H5 appears in none of the LG dryer sources checked for this page — not in the LG US help library's dryer code list, and not in the DLE8400BE, WKEX200HWA or DLE3180W owner-manual error tables. The humidity-sensor code LG actually publishes for its dryers is HS. An earlier version of this entry gave H5 the humidity-sensor meaning that belongs to HS; that claim is withdrawn. If your dryer seems to show H5, the documented code to check first is HS — the letters are one mis-read segment apart.

Start with what LG publishes, because the dryer code list is short enough to hold in one view. The LG US help library's dryer code list runs to fifteen sections: the Flow Sense family (d75, d80, d90, d95), nP and PS for power, dE for the door, E13 for hybrid condensing models, F0 for a missing lint filter, HS for the humidity sensor, PF for power failure, tE1/tE3 and tE2 for the thermistor, and the non-fault displays (Clean Filter reminder, Wrinkle Care, CL for Child Lock, the cooling/drying light, Add for the steam feeder) — closing with how to reset the control panel. H5 is not among them. The owner manuals agree: the DLE8400BE manual's error table lists tE1 (rendered 'tE1 or tEz' — the panel's segment display is why the second code can look like letters) and Hs, both answered with 'turn off the appliance and call for service'; the WKEX200HWA manual lists the same pair plus the power codes and gAS; the DLE3180W manual lists tE1 through tE7 and PS. Three LG documents, three code lists, no H5 in any of them. What those documents do contain is the code H5 is standing in for. HS is LG's humidity sensor report: the help library states that an HS code indicates an error with the humidity sensor, that it will cause the dryer to run for two and a half hours (which may seem as though the dryer is not drying), and that the owner's remedy is to clean the sensors on the inside of the dryer, located below the lint filter, with a damp rag or paper towel and allow the sensors to fully dry before attempting another cycle — with a repair service if HS persists. The manuals state the same fault more tersely: humidity sensor failure, turn off the appliance and call for service. Read together, the two LG sources describe one fault at two depths: a sensor the owner may clean once, and a service case if cleaning does not clear it. Notice how much of the folklore around 'H5' is really HS wearing a mis-read badge: on a segmented display the letter S and the digit 5 are built from nearly the same strokes, and a photograph of the display — not a memory of it — is what separates a humidity-sensor clean from a hunt for a code that does not exist. The tEz rendering in LG's own manual table makes the same point from inside LG's documentation: LG itself prints the code two ways because the panel cannot draw a clean 2. Displays approximate; manuals arbitrate.

Applies to: Clarification — LG dryers (standalone and washer-dryer combinations). The documented neighbour code HS applies across LG's sensor-dry dryer range.
Safety first. Work safe: power off at the plug or breaker before panels come off, taps closed before hoses come off, and no bypassing of safety devices — ever. Unplug before opening the cabinet (240V on electric models). Keep the vent run disconnected only while testing airflow briefly — running a dryer vented indoors long-term is a moisture and lint hazard, and on gas models an exhaust hazard.

What causes the H5 code on a LG dryer?

HS, mis-read as H5 (the documented default)

LG's humidity-sensor code is HS, and on the dryer's segmented display an S is a 5 waiting to be misread — the same display family that leads LG's own manual to print a thermistor code as both tE2 and tEz. A dryer that 'shows H5' and then runs for hours while seeming not to dry is matching HS's documented behaviour exactly.

The humidity sensor genuinely reporting (HS's own story)

LG documents the fault and its one owner remedy: the sensors inside the dryer, below the lint filter, need cleaning with a damp rag or paper towel and must fully dry before the next cycle. A sensor surface filmed by everyday laundry residue is the condition that remedy exists for; a code that survives a proper clean and dry is the service case both LG sources name.

A code carried in from another chart

H5 circulates in third-party dryer code lists and in other appliances' documentation, and codes migrate in household memory from the machine next door. If the display truly and photographically reads H5 on an LG dryer, it is not a code LG's dryer documentation defines — which is a fact about the chart, not a licence to borrow a meaning from a different appliance.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Photograph the display, lit, before touching a control. Zoom the photograph: is the second character the letter S or the digit 5? That one character decides whether you are cleaning a humidity sensor or chasing an undocumented string.
  2. Match the behaviour, not just the letters: LG's HS signature is a dryer that runs for about two and a half hours and seems not to be drying. H5 has no documented behaviour, because it has no documented existence — behaviour that matches HS is HS until proven otherwise.
  3. Open your own model's manual to its error-code table (the model number is inside the door frame). If the table lists Hs and no H5 — as the LG manuals checked for this page all do — your model's documentation has answered the question.
  4. Note the cycle and the load: HS is a sensing report, so the load's size and mix at the time it appeared are part of the record a service visit will want.

Lg dryer h5 error code fix

  1. If the code is HS: clean the sensors on the inside of the dryer, below the lint filter, with a damp rag or paper towel — LG's published remedy, in LG's words — and allow the sensors to fully dry before attempting another cycle. Do not escalate the cleaning beyond that wording; LG publishes no stronger owner procedure for this sensor.
  2. If HS persists after the clean and full dry: the manuals' instruction takes over — turn off the appliance and call for service. A humidity-sensor fault that survives its one documented owner remedy is a sensor or sensing-circuit diagnosis, done with the model's service documentation.
  3. If the display verifiably reads H5 (photograph, manual checked, not HS): there is no LG fix to apply, because there is no LG code to fix. Run LG's documented control-panel reset once (next section) to clear any latched display, and if the same string returns, book service with the photograph and the model number — an undocumented display that repeats is diagnostic information for a technician, not a DIY target.

The part that usually fails: None for H5; humidity sensor (service diagnosis) for HS

H5 names no part because LG names no such code. For a persistent HS, the humidity sensor and its circuit are what the service visit tests — LG publishes no owner replacement procedure and no test values for it.

Lg dryer h5 error code reset

LG publishes no H5 reset, because it publishes no H5. The reset that exists is LG's control-panel reset from the dryer code list: power the dryer off, unplug it or trip the circuit breaker, press and hold the Start/Pause key for 5 seconds while the unit is without power, plug it back in and power it on. Applied to a genuine HS, that reset clears the display but not the sensor's condition — LG's HS remedy is the sensor clean, and its escalation is service. Judge any reset by the next full cycle, not by the cleared panel.

LG dryer codes clear with a power cycle: unplug for about 5 minutes, hold the Power button for a few seconds while unplugged on some models, restore power and run a test load. Flow Sense bars and codes like D80 are computed fresh from airflow measurements each cycle, so they only 'reset' by fixing the airflow — a power cycle alone cannot clear a genuine restriction.

Why does the H5 code keep coming back?

HS that returns soon after a proper clean and dry has left the documented owner remedy behind; report the interval (every load, or only some cycles) when you book, because intermittency is the diagnostic content. An 'H5' that never photographs as anything but H5, on a dryer whose manual lists only HS, belongs in the same service conversation — as a display or control question, with the photograph as the evidence.

Can you still use the dryer with H5 showing? On the HS reading, LG's documented behaviour is a dryer that keeps running — for about two and a half hours — rather than one that stops; that run is the code's symptom, not a hazard the help library flags. On any reading you cannot resolve to a documented code, stop after the checks above and let the service visit arbitrate.

How to stop H5 coming back

When to call a pro. When HS persists after LG's clean-and-dry remedy (the manuals' own threshold: turn off the appliance and call for service), and whenever an undocumented display repeats after one control-panel reset.

Retrieving stored fault codes on LG dryers

LG dryers have an installation/test mode (used at install to verify venting and, on gas models, the gas connection) and a service test mode that steps through motor, heater, steam and sensor checks while showing stored codes (the tE family and others). The entry sequence is model-specific and printed in the service manual; running the install test after any vent work is the fastest way to confirm a Flow Sense fix.

Other LG dryer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
ADDAdd water notice; the steam feeder needs water for a steam cycle.Fill the steam feeder with tap water to the max line; close the drawer.
AECompressor error on heat-pump WashTower dryers; shown with LE2 (fold 'AE').Unplug, wait one minute, reconnect and retry; request service if it persists.
CLChild Lock is ON — not an error (panel locked).Hold the Child Lock button (or the marked pair) ~3 seconds until CL clears — the pairing is printed on the panel.
D80Flow Sense: exhaust airflow is about 80% blocked — vent restriction warning (80% level of the D80/D90/D95 family).Clean the entire vent run properly (rotary brush kit or a vent-cleaning service) — from the dryer to the outside hood, not just the ends.
D90Flow Sense: exhaust about 90% blocked — serious vent restriction (mid-level of the D80/D90/D95 family).Full vent-run cleaning (brush kit or service), hood to dryer.
D95Flow Sense: exhaust about 95% blocked — the dryer stops for safety (top of the D80/D90/D95 family).Clean the full vent run with a rotary brush; clear/repair the hood; replace crushed or foil hose with metal duct.
E13Drain error on hybrid condensing dryers; sump water cannot drain.Straighten and clear the drain hose, use only the standard hose, restart.
FOFilter notice (display F0); the lint filter is out of its housing.Remove the lint filter and reinsert it fully into the filter housing.
HSHumidity sensor error; the humidity sensor is faulty.Wipe the sensors with a damp rag, let them dry fully, then retry.
IFFilter installation notice on WashTower dryers; the lint filter is not detected (fold 'IF').Assemble both filter parts correctly and check the magnet is in place.
LE1Not an LG dryer error code in LG's published documentation. LE1 appears in none of the LG dryer sources checked for this page — not in the LG US help library's dryer code list, and not in the DLE8400BE, WKEX200HWA or DLE3180W owner-manual error tables. The documented dryer code one character away is tE1 (thermistor), and LE itself is LG's washer motor code, not a dryer code. An earlier version of this entry presented LE1 as an LG dryer motor fault with belt and motor procedures; LG publishes no such dryer code, and that claim is withdrawn. There is no LG-published fix for a dryer LE1, because there is no LG-published dryer LE1 — and this page will not borrow the washer's motor procedures or a belt-and-motor routine and dress them as one. Opening a dryer cabinet to chase a code its manufacturer does not list is how a display question becomes a repair bill.
LE2Compressor error on heat-pump WashTower dryers; problem with the drying compressor (fold 'LE2').Unplug, wait one minute, reconnect and retry; request service if it persists.
LE3Air circulation motor error on WashTower dryers.Unplug, wait one minute, reconnect and retry; request service if it persists.
NPNo current detected at the heater — displayed nP. LG's manuals define it for electric dryers: the electric dryer power cord is not connected correctly, or the house power supply is incorrect.Restore a correct, verified 240V supply and a correctly connected power cord (installer/electrician work — dryer circuits are high-current).

Codes H5 gets confused with

LE1 — Not an LG dryer error code in LG's published documentation. The honest starting point is the shape of LG's published dryer list, because LE1's absence from it is total rather than technical.

CL — Child Lock is ON — not an error (panel locked). CL on an LG dryer means Child Lock is active: buttons are disabled so settings can't be changed mid-cycle by small hands.

TE1 — Thermistor error — a problem was detected with the dryer's thermistor (temperature sensor). LG renders it tE1 and lists it with tE3; owner manuals group tE1 through tE7 as temperature sensor failure. tE1 reports that the control detected a problem with the dryer's thermistor — the temperature sensor it relies on to regulate heat.

NP — No current detected at the heater — displayed nP. LG's manuals define it for electric dryers: the electric dryer power cord is not connected correctly, or the house power supply is incorrect. nP is an electric-dryer code, not a gas-dryer code.

Frequently asked questions

What does H5 mean on my LG dryer?

LG does not publish an H5 code for its dryers: it appears in neither the LG help library's dryer code list nor the error tables of the LG dryer manuals checked (DLE8400BE, WKEX200HWA, DLE3180W). The humidity-sensor code LG does publish is HS, and H5 is most often HS mis-read on the segmented display. Photograph the display and check whether the second character is S before acting on any H5 meaning found elsewhere.

Is H5 the same code as HS on an LG dryer?

They are not two codes — only one of them is an LG dryer code. HS is documented: a humidity sensor error that makes the dryer run about two and a half hours, remedied by cleaning the sensors below the lint filter with a damp rag or paper towel and letting them fully dry, with service if it persists. H5 is documented nowhere in LG's dryer literature, which is why this page treats it as a mis-reading of HS until a photograph proves otherwise.

How do I reset an LG dryer H5 code?

There is no H5 reset in LG's documentation. LG's documented control-panel reset — power off, unplug or trip the breaker, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, restore power — clears latched displays generally, and LG's HS guidance adds the step that actually addresses the underlying code: clean the humidity sensors and let them dry fully before the next cycle. A display that returns after both belongs to a service visit.

Why does my LG dryer run for hours and seem not to dry — is that H5 or HS?

That behaviour is HS's documented signature: LG's help library states the HS code will cause the dryer to run for two and a half hours, which may seem as though the dryer is not drying. Clean the sensors inside the dryer below the lint filter with a damp rag or paper towel, allow them to fully dry, and run another cycle; if HS persists, LG's manuals instruct turning the appliance off and calling for service.
