LG Dryer CL Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

LG Dryer display showing CL — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Child Lock is ON — not an error (panel locked).

CL on an LG dryer means Child Lock is active: buttons are disabled so settings can't be changed mid-cycle by small hands. It is a status, not a fault — and on LG laundry it is confused with LE constantly (on dryers there is no LE motor code in the washer's sense, which doubles the confusion). The detail that saves most owners a second search is that the button you hold is not the same button on every LG dryer, and LG's own documents prove it three ways. The help library's instruction is deliberately generic — press and hold the key labelled Child Lock for 3 seconds — because the label moves. On models like the DLEX3370W there is a dedicated Child Lock button: press and hold it for 3 seconds, the Child Lock icon shows in the display, and all controls are disabled except the Power button. On the DLE2350R generation there is no button with that name at all: Child Lock is a secondary function, marked with an asterisk, living on the Wrinkle Care button — press and hold Wrinkle Care for 3 seconds to activate or deactivate it. A third manual family puts the asterisked Child Lock on the Easy Iron button instead. The asterisk is the system: across LG's dryer manuals, option buttons carry a primary function in large print and a secondary function marked with an asterisk underneath, and the secondary function is always reached by the press-and-hold rather than the tap. So the universal instruction is not a button name but a reading skill — find the words Child Lock printed anywhere on your panel, in whatever size, next to whatever primary function, and hold that button for a full 3 seconds. Two behaviours from the manuals complete the picture. First, the lock outlives the cycle: once set, Child Lock remains active until it is manually deactivated, it lasts after the end of the cycle, and it must be turned off before another cycle will run — which is why CL so often greets owners at the start of laundry day rather than during the load that set it. Second, the lock is a panel state, not a cycle state: it can be set while the dryer is operating, precisely to keep cycle settings from being changed mid-cycle, and the cycle underneath it continues untouched. Nothing about CL — on a vented dryer, a heat pump dryer from the same LG range, or a ThinQ-connected model showing the same panel — indicates anything about the drying system itself; the help library files it among the display readings, between the Wrinkle Care explanation and the perfectly normal cooling/drying light.

Applies to: All LG dryers with Child Lock.
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Unplug before opening the cabinet (240V on electric models). Keep the vent run disconnected only while testing airflow briefly — running a dryer vented indoors long-term is a moisture and lint hazard, and on gas models an exhaust hazard.

What causes the CL code on a LG dryer?

Child Lock activated

Deliberately, or by a long press on the marked button pair.

Set during the previous cycle, met on the next one

Because the manuals state that Child Lock remains active until manually deactivated and lasts after the end of the cycle, the commonest CL story is archaeological: someone locked the panel during yesterday's load — often deliberately, mid-cycle, to protect the settings — and today's owner meets the locked panel with no memory of the setting. The lock did not engage itself overnight; it simply never disengaged.

A cleaning wipe or a leaning hand

The release gesture and the engagement gesture are the same 3-second hold, and 3 seconds is exactly how long a cloth dwells on one spot while a panel is wiped, or a hand rests on the console while the owner leans in to load the drum. CL that appears in a household with no small children and no memory of setting it usually entered this way — through the panel's front door, by its documented method.

The household's smallest engineer

The feature exists because children press things, and it engages the same way for them as for anyone: one sustained press on the right button. A CL that coincides with a toddler's new interest in the laundry room is the feature working as designed, twice over — it locked, and it kept the cycle settings safe.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Look for the lock icon; test a button — beep without response confirms the lock.
  2. Use the Power button as the lock's fingerprint: LG's manuals state that with Child Lock on, all controls are disabled except the Power button. A panel where Power answers and nothing else does is a locked panel, not a dead one — a genuinely failed panel usually takes Power with it.
  3. Read the panel for the asterisk before hunting for a button named Child Lock: on many models the words sit in small print under Wrinkle Care, Easy Iron or another option button. The small print, not the button's main label, is where LG puts this function.
  4. Check the icon as well as the letters: the manuals describe a Child Lock icon shown in the display when the function is active. Some panels show the icon with CL, some lead with the icon — either presentation is the same state with the same 3-second release.
  5. Ask the household before troubleshooting further: was the lock set during the last cycle, by anyone, for any reason? Because the lock persists across cycles by design, the answer is very often yes, and it closes the case faster than any panel test.

How to fix the CL error code

  1. Hold the Child Lock button (or the marked pair) ~3 seconds until CL clears — the pairing is printed on the panel.
  2. After releasing the lock, prove the release by changing a setting — a temperature or dry-level change that the panel accepts — rather than by the disappearance of CL alone. A panel that accepts settings is unlocked in fact, whatever it briefly displays.
  3. If your household uses the lock deliberately, agree on the one fact that matters: which button carries it on this panel. Most repeat CL confusion is not the lock's fault but the asterisk's — the function hides under another button's name, and a household that has located it once never searches for it again.
  4. If a full, correctly targeted 3-second hold on the button your panel marks for Child Lock does not release it, one power cycle is the remaining owner step before service: power off, unplug briefly, restore, and try the hold once more on the fresh panel. A lock that survives that, on a panel where Power works, is a control-panel fault for a service visit — not a stronger hold or a longer one.

The part that usually fails: None

A feature state, not a failure.

How to reset / clear the CL code

Not applicable — unlocking is instant.

LG dryer codes clear with a power cycle: unplug for about 5 minutes, hold the Power button for a few seconds while unplugged on some models, restore power and run a test load. Flow Sense bars and codes like D80 are computed fresh from airflow measurements each cycle, so they only 'reset' by fixing the airflow — a power cycle alone cannot clear a genuine restriction.

Why does the CL code keep coming back?

Self-re-engaging CL suggests a sticking panel button. CL that returns repeatedly in a household that never sets it deliberately is a panel being held, not a lock malfunctioning: the suspects are a cloth stored draped over the console, items stacked against the buttons, or a loading posture that leans a hand on the panel for seconds at a time. Change the physical habit and the code stops. CL that returns with the panel untouched and no press possible — appearing on a fresh power-up in an empty laundry room — has left the feature's documented behaviour; that pattern, with its dates, is the service visit's subject, framed as a control-panel question rather than a lock question.

Can you still use the dryer with CL showing? Yes, once unlocked.

How to stop CL coming back

When to call a pro. Only if the panel stays dead after unlocking + power cycle.

Retrieving stored fault codes on LG dryers

LG dryers have an installation/test mode (used at install to verify venting and, on gas models, the gas connection) and a service test mode that steps through motor, heater, steam and sensor checks while showing stored codes (the tE family and others). The entry sequence is model-specific and printed in the service manual; running the install test after any vent work is the fastest way to confirm a Flow Sense fix.

Other LG dryer error codes

CodeMeaningFirst fix
ADDAdd water notice; the steam feeder needs water for a steam cycle.Fill the steam feeder with tap water to the max line; close the drawer.
AECompressor error on heat-pump WashTower dryers; shown with LE2 (fold 'AE').Unplug, wait one minute, reconnect and retry; request service if it persists.
D80Flow Sense: exhaust airflow is about 80% blocked — vent restriction warning (80% level of the D80/D90/D95 family).Clean the entire vent run properly (rotary brush kit or a vent-cleaning service) — from the dryer to the outside hood, not just the ends.
D90Flow Sense: exhaust about 90% blocked — serious vent restriction (mid-level of the D80/D90/D95 family).Full vent-run cleaning (brush kit or service), hood to dryer.
D95Flow Sense: exhaust about 95% blocked — the dryer stops for safety (top of the D80/D90/D95 family).Clean the full vent run with a rotary brush; clear/repair the hood; replace crushed or foil hose with metal duct.
E13Drain error on hybrid condensing dryers; sump water cannot drain.Straighten and clear the drain hose, use only the standard hose, restart.
FOFilter notice (display F0); the lint filter is out of its housing.Remove the lint filter and reinsert it fully into the filter housing.
H5Not an LG dryer error code. H5 appears in none of the LG dryer sources checked for this page — not in the LG US help library's dryer code list, and not in the DLE8400BE, WKEX200HWA or DLE3180W owner-manual error tables. The humidity-sensor code LG actually publishes for its dryers is HS. An earlier version of this entry gave H5 the humidity-sensor meaning that belongs to HS; that claim is withdrawn. If your dryer seems to show H5, the documented code to check first is HS — the letters are one mis-read segment apart. If the code is HS: clean the sensors on the inside of the dryer, below the lint filter, with a damp rag or paper towel — LG's published remedy, in LG's words — and allow the sensors to fully dry before attempting another cycle. Do not escalate the cleaning beyond that wording; LG publishes no stronger owner procedure for this sensor.
HSHumidity sensor error; the humidity sensor is faulty.Wipe the sensors with a damp rag, let them dry fully, then retry.
IFFilter installation notice on WashTower dryers; the lint filter is not detected (fold 'IF').Assemble both filter parts correctly and check the magnet is in place.
LE1Not an LG dryer error code in LG's published documentation. LE1 appears in none of the LG dryer sources checked for this page — not in the LG US help library's dryer code list, and not in the DLE8400BE, WKEX200HWA or DLE3180W owner-manual error tables. The documented dryer code one character away is tE1 (thermistor), and LE itself is LG's washer motor code, not a dryer code. An earlier version of this entry presented LE1 as an LG dryer motor fault with belt and motor procedures; LG publishes no such dryer code, and that claim is withdrawn. There is no LG-published fix for a dryer LE1, because there is no LG-published dryer LE1 — and this page will not borrow the washer's motor procedures or a belt-and-motor routine and dress them as one. Opening a dryer cabinet to chase a code its manufacturer does not list is how a display question becomes a repair bill.
LE2Compressor error on heat-pump WashTower dryers; problem with the drying compressor (fold 'LE2').Unplug, wait one minute, reconnect and retry; request service if it persists.
LE3Air circulation motor error on WashTower dryers.Unplug, wait one minute, reconnect and retry; request service if it persists.
NPNo current detected at the heater — displayed nP. LG's manuals define it for electric dryers: the electric dryer power cord is not connected correctly, or the house power supply is incorrect.Restore a correct, verified 240V supply and a correctly connected power cord (installer/electrician work — dryer circuits are high-current).

Codes CL gets confused with

H5 — Not an LG dryer error code. Start with what LG publishes, because the dryer code list is short enough to hold in one view.

LE1 — Not an LG dryer error code in LG's published documentation. The honest starting point is the shape of LG's published dryer list, because LE1's absence from it is total rather than technical.

NP — No current detected at the heater — displayed nP. LG's manuals define it for electric dryers: the electric dryer power cord is not connected correctly, or the house power supply is incorrect. nP is an electric-dryer code, not a gas-dryer code.

D90 — Flow Sense: exhaust about 90% blocked — serious vent restriction (mid-level of the D80/D90/D95 family). D90 means LG's Flow Sense measures the exhaust at roughly 90% restricted.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my LG dryer respond? It shows CL.

Child Lock is on. Hold the lock-marked button(s) for ~3 seconds to release it.

What does error code CL mean on an LG dryer?

It is not an error. LG's dryer code list states that a CL reading means the Child Lock — also called Control Lock — is active: the control panel is disabled and settings cannot be adjusted. Press and hold the key labelled Child Lock on your panel for 3 seconds to disable it; on models without a dedicated button, Child Lock is the asterisked secondary function of an option button such as Wrinkle Care.

Why does my LG heat pump dryer show CL and ignore its buttons?

For the same reason any LG dryer does: the Child Lock panel state is a control feature, independent of how the dryer makes heat, and LG's dryer code list covers it for the range generally. The panel is locked, not faulty — Power still works, everything else waits. Find the Child Lock label on your panel (it may be the asterisked function under another button's name) and hold that button for 3 seconds.

Why is CL still on my LG dryer the next day, when nobody set it?

Because LG's manuals build it that way: once set, Child Lock remains active until it is manually deactivated, and it lasts after the end of the cycle — it must be turned off before another cycle will run. A lock set during yesterday's load, deliberately or by a long accidental press while loading or wiping the panel, is still on duty this morning. The 3-second hold on the marked button releases it.

What does error code cl mean on lg dryer?

Child Lock is ON — not an error (panel locked). CL on an LG dryer means Child Lock is active: buttons are disabled so settings can't be changed mid-cycle by small hands.
