Kenmore Washer OE Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Kenmore Washer display showing OE — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Drain error on LG-built Kenmore washers — the machine was unable to drain the water.

OE is LG's drain code, and LG-built Kenmores (796-prefix) wear it too: the pump ran, the level didn't fall in the time allowed. On the front-loaders, check the user-cleanable debris filter behind the lower flap first — then hose/standpipe, then the pump. Top-load 796 models have no front filter door at all: on those, LG's documentation sets OE when the washer is unable to drain for 13 minutes, and the whole path is hose, standpipe and pump. Whirlpool-built (110) Kenmores never show OE — their drain fault is written F9E1 (or Ld/F02 on older letter displays) in the Whirlpool system. Three platform facts complete this page. First, timing: OE is a timed verdict, not an instant one. LG's top-load documentation gives the figure for that platform — the OE error displays if the washer is unable to drain the water for 13 minutes — and the front-load manuals frame the same idea as a drain that does not complete in the model's set time. Either way, a washer gamely pumping for many minutes before showing OE is behaving as designed, and a washer that shows OE quickly with a tub still full has usually found a total blockage or a dead pump rather than a marginal one. Second, the house side exists: LG's own drain self-test separates machine from plumbing — disconnect the drain hose from the drain pipe, run a Spin cycle, and if water drains properly from the hose, the drain pipe may be clogged and the cleaning belongs to the house drain. Third, the 796 top-load manual adds a behaviour owners misread as a second fault: if an error message is displayed for four minutes, the water in the tub will automatically drain, with an alarm sounding one minute before draining — the machine emptying itself under an error is documented behaviour on this platform. Kenmore Connect models are 796 LG-built machines and use this same OE; the 'Connect' branding changes the diagnostics app, not the drain code.

Applies to: LG-built Kenmore washers (796-prefix), front- and top-load. The filter ritual in the checks below is front-load only.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Unplug before removing the top or rear panel, and shut the water taps before disconnecting hoses. On top-loaders, never reach into a spinning basket; wait for a complete stop.

What causes the OE code on a Kenmore washer?

Clogged debris filter (front-load)

The front-load filter mats with lint and traps objects.

Hose/standpipe blockage

Kinks, plugs, hose too deep.

Drain discharge too high

The 796 manual lists a drain discharge more than 96 inches (8 ft) above the bottom of the washer as a cause of slow or no draining.

Pump jam/failure

Debris or open winding.

A frozen drain hose in cold weather

LG lists freezing as an OE cause in its own right on both loader types: a hose run through an unheated space, or a machine in a cold garage or basement, can hold an ice plug that looks exactly like a debris blockage — pump running, nothing moving — until the thaw. The setting is the diagnosis: an OE that appears on the coldest morning of the year, on a machine that drained perfectly the week before, in a laundry room that gets near freezing, is this branch until proven otherwise. LG's remedy is patience and warm water, set out in the fixes below, not pump replacement.

The house drain, not the washer

A standpipe or house drain that has narrowed with years of lint and detergent residue drains a sink fine and a washer badly, because the washer empties a full tub at pump speed — it is the highest-flow drain event in most houses. The result is an OE that mimics a dying pump: slow drain, occasional success on small loads, failure on big ones. LG's self-test (hose out of the standpipe, Spin cycle, watch the hose end) separates the two in one cycle: strong flow from the free hose convicts the house drain, and no pump fitted to the washer will fix it.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Front-load: drain via the emergency hose, unscrew and clean the filter. All models: hose run and standpipe check (free of clogs and kinks, not pinched behind or under the washer, discharge no higher than 96 inches), then the pump listen test.
  2. Run LG's machine-versus-house test before ordering anything: disconnect the drain hose from the drain pipe, power on, run Spin. Water draining properly from the hose = house drain problem. Weak or no flow at the hose = the fault is inside the machine's path (filter on front-loaders, hose, pump).
  3. Check the drain discharge height while you are behind the machine: the 796 manual lists a discharge more than 96 inches above the bottom of the washer as a cause of slow or no draining — a standpipe raised during a remodel quietly creates OE on a healthy washer.
  4. On a 796 top-loader, do not hunt for a filter door that does not exist: LG's own top-load guidance confirms top-loaders have no accessible front filter, so the front-load filter ritual in the deep note applies only to the front-load models — on top-loaders the path is hose, standpipe and pump, in that order.

How to fix the OE error code

  1. Clean the filter (front-load); clear pump/hose; replace a dead pump; confirm with Drain+Spin.
  2. For the frozen branch, use LG's thaw instead of force: scoop out tub water, pour warm water (LG specifies 50–60 °C — warm, not boiling) into the tub, close the door and wait 1–2 hours; wrap a warm wet towel around the drain hose if it stays frozen. Then run Spin/Spin Only to drain; no drainage means the ice has not melted sufficiently — wait longer rather than replacing parts that are only cold.

The part that usually fails: Drain pump

The last step, not the first: a pump that runs with a proven-clear path but moves no water is worn; a silent pump on a drain call is the electrical branch.

How to reset / clear the OE code

Power-cycle; clears on a normal drain.

Whirlpool-built washers clear most codes with a power reset: unplug for 1 minute (top-load models with a cycle-status display sometimes need the lid opened and closed 6 times within 12 seconds after power is restored — the well-known lid-sequence calibration/clear procedure on VMW top-loaders). Codes stored in the control's fault history remain readable in diagnostic mode even after they stop showing on the display, which is why a code that 'went away' can still be found by a technician.

Why does the OE code keep coming back?

Clean filter + recurrence = downstream blockage or weakening pump. OE that returns after a filter clean on a front-loader is usually downstream of the filter — a pump impeller worn or jammed by what the filter used to catch, a hose collapsing internally, or the house drain narrowing — and LG's hose-off self-test splits those in one cycle. OE that returns seasonally, in the same cold weeks, is the frozen branch repeating and argues for insulating or rerouting the hose run rather than another pump. And OE that returns only on the largest loads is a restriction declaring itself under maximum flow: partial today, total on some future wash day, so treat the pattern as the repair window rather than as an intermittent to live with.

Can you still use the washer with OE showing? No — use the emergency hose to empty the tub.

How to stop OE coming back

When to call a pro. Powered pump + clear path + no drain = sensor/board.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Kenmore washers

Whirlpool platforms have a well-documented diagnostic mode. On front-load (Duet and later) models: with the machine in standby, press and hold any one button for 3 seconds, release for 3 seconds, repeat for a total of three holds — the display lights up and shows stored fault codes (F-codes with E-suffixes), which you step through with the same button. On top-load VMW models (most Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore top-loaders since ~2010): turn the cycle knob with a specific left/right sequence (commonly counterclockwise once, then clockwise three, counterclockwise one, clockwise one) until all status LEDs light, then use the knob to read fault codes as LED blink patterns. The tech sheet inside the cabinet lists the exact sequence and code chart for your model — use it rather than a generic chart, because code meanings shifted between Duet, Cabrio/Bravos and VMW generations.

Codes OE gets confused with

UE — Unbalanced error on LG-built Kenmore washers (796) — the automatic rebalance was not successful and the cycle has paused for manual adjustment. Whirlpool-built (110) Kenmores do not display UE; their balance reports are uL (top-load letter displays) and F0E5/OFb (F/E platforms). UE is the second stage of a two-stage display on the LG-built machines.

ND — No Drain — the Kenmore washer is not draining (Whirlpool-built Kenmore rendering). ND on Kenmore top-loaders (Whirlpool-built, 110-prefix models) is the drain fault: pump ran, level stayed.

LE — Locked motor error on Kenmore washers built by LG — the direct-drive motor cannot rotate. (On Whirlpool-built Kenmores LE-family topics route to the F-code system instead — check your model plate.) Kenmore is a badge, not a factory: Kenmore washers were built by LG and by Whirlpool, and LE is the LG-built machines' motor code — the rotor didn't turn as commanded.

IE — Inlet error on LG-built Kenmore washers — the machine is not filling properly (rendered 1E on some displays). IE is LG's fill code on Kenmore's LG-built line: valves called, level didn't rise in time.

Frequently asked questions

Where's the filter on a Kenmore front-loader?

LG-built models: behind the bottom-front flap, beside a small drain hose — the LG layout.

Does a Kenmore top-load washer have a drain filter I should clean for OE?

No — and looking for one wastes the afternoon. The user-cleanable debris filter behind the bottom-front door exists on the LG-built front-loaders (796 front-load), next to the emergency drain hose. LG's own guidance confirms its top-loaders have no accessible front filter door, so on a 796 top-loader showing OE the checks are the drain hose (kinks, clogs, freezing), the standpipe and its height, and then the drain pump — there is no filter step to skip or to blame.

What does OE mean on a Kenmore Connect washer?

The same as on every other 796 Kenmore: the washer was unable to drain the water. Kenmore Connect models are LG-built (796-prefix) machines — the Connect name refers to the phone-diagnostics feature, and the fault codes remain LG's, so OE is diagnosed exactly as on this page: filter first on front-loaders, hose and standpipe next, pump last. If your Connect model is a top-loader, skip the filter step; it has none.

Why does my Kenmore 796 drain slowly for minutes before it shows OE?

Because OE is a timed verdict: the control lets the drain run and only posts the code when the water has not fallen within the platform's allowed time — 13 minutes on LG's top-load documentation. Minutes of slow draining before the code are therefore evidence, not confusion: something is restricting the flow partially (a filter loading up, a hose partly kinked or pinched behind the machine, a narrowing house drain) rather than blocking it completely. A partial restriction found now is the cheap version of this repair; left alone it finishes the job and the code arrives with a tub that does not drain at all.
