Frigidaire Dishwasher UO Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Frigidaire Dishwasher display showing UO — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Vent stuck open — Frigidaire's Service Data Sheet (Electrolux Home Products North America, P/N 808463501) lists display code Uo as 'Vent stuck open', with siblings uC 'Vent stuck closed' and uF 'Vent rpm too low or stopped'.

UO belongs to Frigidaire's letter-code generation. In Frigidaire's Use & Care manuals (FGHD2465, FDBB4365, FGBD2445, FPHD2481 and others) 'uo' is listed among the malfunction codes the indicator may display — 'Er', 'uF', 'uo' or 'CE' — with the instruction to contact the Frigidaire Customer Care Center; the owner's guides list the code but do not define it. The definition comes from Frigidaire's service documentation: the vent assembly sits in the top right rear of the tub, its damper must be closed during washing and opens (with the vent fan) for drying, and Frigidaire's Water/Service Test monitors the fan damper at its very first interval, displaying 'uo' when that check fails. So although the vent is a drying-system part, UO itself is a vent-closed failure reported around the wash — an earlier version of this entry wrongly placed the vent in the door and the fault in the dry phase. Frigidaire's Service Data Sheet explains the vent system UO guards. During the dry portion of a cycle, the heater, the solenoid that opens the vent's damper, and the vent fan are energised together: the fan draws cooler, drier outside air into the tub and pushes it downwards, while hot, moist air rises and leaves through a condensing duct near the top of the door, where the water it carries condenses and drains away. The vent assembly itself sits in the top right rear of the tub. The damper therefore has two jobs in one cycle — sealed while water is spraying, open while air is moving — and UO is the report for the first of those jobs failing: the vent has not confirmed closed for washing. That is why a 'drying part' can stop a machine that has barely filled.

Applies to: Frigidaire dishwashers of the letter-code generation with a powered vent/blower assembly (many Gallery and Professional models of that era). Newer i-code models do not use UO.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Trip the breaker before removing the base access panel, and shut the water valve off before disconnecting the supply line.

What causes the UO code on a Frigidaire dishwasher?

Vent damper stuck or held open

The Service Data Sheet names the monitored device plainly — fan damper. Steam-borne grease and hard-water deposits build up on the damper and its seal until it no longer closes or no longer registers closed.

Vent assembly failure

The assembly that drives the damper (and houses the vent fan) has failed; Frigidaire's service sequence for UO is: check the wiring between the vent assembly and the main control board, replace the vent assembly if the wiring is correct, and replace the main control board only if the error still exists.

Wiring between the vent assembly and the main control board

The documented first check in that sequence — the control cannot be told the vent is closed over a broken or unseated connection.

Main control board (last, not first)

Only after the wiring and the vent assembly are proven — the board is the end of Frigidaire's sequence, not its start.

A damper that moves but no longer seals or registers closed

Between 'stuck wide open' and 'working' sits the common middle state: the damper still flaps — owners sometimes hear the vent assembly clicking or cycling at start-up — but deposits on the damper and its seat, or wear inside the assembly, leave it short of fully closed, so the closed confirmation never reaches the control. Frigidaire's service test makes this state visible: the fan damper is the monitored device at the very first interval of the Water/Service Test, and 'uo' is what the display shows when that interval's check fails, before washing has properly begun.

Confusing the damper code with the fan codes (uC and uF)

Frigidaire's table is a small system, and reading the wrong member wastes a part order: Uo is the damper stuck open, uC is the damper stuck closed (the failure the dry interval of the service test watches for), and uF is the vent fan's speed — rpm too low or stopped. A machine that washes but dries badly is telling a uC/uF story; a machine that faults at start-up is telling the UO story. The vent assembly houses both damper and fan, which is why the assembly is the shared remedy — but the code still tells you which function failed its check.

A vent assembly disturbed by an earlier repair or installation

The wiring check is first in Frigidaire's UO sequence for a reason: the vent assembly connects to the main control board by a harness that is unplugged whenever the machine is serviced or pulled out. A UO that dates from an installation, a move, or another repair — rather than arriving gradually — deserves the connector checked before the assembly is condemned: an unseated connection produces exactly the same 'no closed signal' report as a dead damper.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Note when UO appears: at cycle start or early in the wash is the classic pattern (the damper is the first device monitored in Frigidaire's service test); a code within the first minute is telling the same story.
  2. Power off at the breaker before touching anything. Inspect the vent area (top right rear of the tub) for visible blockage or deposit build-up, and check that the vent assembly's wiring connector is seated.
  3. Do not confuse this vent with the sink air gap: the UO vent is the dishwasher's own powered vent assembly, not the countertop air-gap fitting, and clearing an air gap does nothing for this code.
  4. Time the code before anything else: UO within the first minute of a start, or before wash action begins, matches Frigidaire's own test order — the fan damper is monitored at interval 1 of the Water/Service Test, ahead of the thermistor, turbidity and hall-sensor checks. A so-called UO that only appears late in drying should be re-read; it is more likely uC or uF, which have different meanings in the same table.
  5. Know what a technician will do, because Frigidaire documents it: cycle the breaker to put the unit in Power Failure mode, then press DRY and START/CANCEL together for 3 seconds to run the Water/Service Test, which steps through the monitored devices in order. If the test stops at its first interval displaying 'uo', the damper check itself has failed — that is a far sharper result than 'the vent seems faulty', and it is the result to quote when booking service.
  6. With power off at the breaker, inspect the vent outlet and damper area for the deposit build-up this system collects — the vent handles every cycle's steam, and hard-water and grease films on the damper seat are visible evidence. Photograph the display as well: on seven-segment displays 'uo', 'uC' and 'uF' are easy to misread for one another, and the exact characters decide the diagnosis.

How to fix a frigidaire dishwasher error code uo?

  1. Clear any blockage or deposits from the vent so the damper can close fully.
  2. With wiring proven, replace the vent assembly if the code returns — it is serviced as an assembly.
  3. Main control board only after the vent assembly and its wiring are proven, per Frigidaire's sequence.
  4. Start where Frigidaire's sequence starts: check the wiring between the vent assembly and the main control board — connector seated, no damaged or pinched run. Only with the wiring proven does the sequence move on, and skipping this step is how good vent assemblies get replaced for a loose plug.
  5. Replace the vent assembly when the wiring is correct and the damper check still fails: Frigidaire services the damper and its fan as the vent assembly (top right rear of the tub), and an assembly whose damper cannot close or report closed is not a clean-and-retry part once deposits are cleared and the code returns.
  6. Replace the main control board only if the error still exists with correct wiring and a new vent assembly — that is the last step of Frigidaire's published sequence, in that order, and any diagnosis that reaches for the board first has skipped the two cheaper, likelier members Frigidaire puts ahead of it.

The part that usually fails: Vent assembly (blower/damper unit, top right rear of the tub)

Replaced as an assembly; order by full model number.

Frigidaire dishwasher error code uo reset

There is no UO-specific reset in Frigidaire's owner's guides — they direct owners to the Customer Care Center when 'uo' displays. The general reset Frigidaire's guides print for error codes (press Cancel, or turn power off at the breaker for 5 minutes) restarts the unit after the vent fault is fixed; a UO that returns immediately is the damper check failing again, not a code that needs clearing harder.

Frigidaire's i-series codes clear with a power reset: switch the breaker off for at least 5 minutes, restore power, and run a cycle. Leak code i30 is the exception in practice — it will not stay cleared while water remains in the base pan, because the float switch is still physically lifted.

Why does the UO code keep coming back?

UO returning after a vent assembly change points to the wiring between the vent and the control, or the control itself — Frigidaire's sequence ends at the main control board. A UO that returns is sorted by its interval. Back at the very next start, with the damper check still failing at the test's first interval, means the closed confirmation still is not reaching the control: wiring that was only visually checked, a replacement assembly not fully seated, or — at the end of Frigidaire's sequence — the control board itself. Back after weeks of clean running is the slower story: deposits rebuilding on a damper that was cleaned rather than replaced, in a vent that processes every cycle's steam. Either way, repeating resets adds nothing; the code is reporting a physical state each time it appears.

Can you still use the dishwasher with UO showing? Usually no — on many models the cycle will not start, or stops early, because the control has not received the vent-closed confirmation it requires for washing. Do not keep restarting it.

How to stop UO coming back

When to call a pro. Frigidaire's owner's guides themselves send 'uo' to service; tub access and board work are a fair technician call.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Frigidaire dishwashers

Frigidaire dishwashers include a diagnostic/water test cycle (entered by holding specific pad combinations — on many Gallery models, holding Power Scrub/Start combinations; the service data sheet behind the toe-kick gives the exact pair) that fills, washes, heats and drains in a compressed sequence and shows any i-code that the control logs.

Codes UO gets confused with

ER — 'Er' on a Frigidaire dishwasher = switch failure (shorted keypad). Frigidaire's Service Data Sheet (Electrolux Home Products North America, P/N 808463501) lists display code Er exactly that way, and Electrolux's service manual for these dishwashers defines the underlying fault as a membrane switch failure: the control has verified that a pad on the membrane switch has been closed for one minute. Er belongs to Frigidaire's letter-code generation.

i30 — Leak/flood error — water detected in the base (anti-flood system active); the dishwasher may drain continuously. i30 is Frigidaire's (Electrolux-platform) flood code: the base float/ sensor found water, so the machine stops filling, often runs the drain pump continuously, and refuses cycles.

i20 — Drain error — the dishwasher is draining too slowly or not at all (i20 family; iF0/iE0 siblings cover related drain/filter states by model). i20 means the drain phase timed out: water is leaving too slowly or not at all.

E20 — Platform-rendering variant of the drain fault on some Frigidaire/Electrolux platforms (E20 = drain system in those charts) — the i20 playbook applies. In E-format platform charts, E20 is the drain fault: the machine isn't emptying in time.

Frequently asked questions

What does UO mean on a Frigidaire dishwasher?

Vent stuck open, per Frigidaire's Service Data Sheet display-code table. Frigidaire's owner's guides list 'uo' as a malfunction code but do not define it — the manufacturer's service documentation does.

Is UO the same as UF on a Frigidaire dishwasher?

No — siblings, not twins: Uo = vent stuck open, uC = vent stuck closed, uF = vent rpm too low or stopped, all three in the same Frigidaire Service Data Sheet table.

How do I reset the Frigidaire dishwasher error code UO?

There is no UO-specific reset, and Frigidaire's owner's guides are honest about why: when 'uo' is displayed they direct owners to the Frigidaire Customer Care Center rather than printing a clearing procedure for it. The general error-code reset those guides print for other codes — pressing Cancel, or turning power off at the breaker for 5 minutes — will restart a Frigidaire or Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher after the vent fault is fixed, and the same applies to a Gallery reset for UO. If UO returns the moment the machine starts, the damper check is failing again; that is a diagnosis, not a reset that needs trying harder.

How do I fix a Frigidaire dishwasher error code UO?

Work Frigidaire's sequence in order. UO means vent stuck open: the control has not received the vent assembly's confirmation that its damper is closed for washing. First check the wiring between the vent assembly and the main control board; if the wiring is correct, replace the vent assembly; only if the error still exists after that does the sequence end at the main control board. Before ordering anything, note when the code appears — at start-up is the classic UO pattern, because the fan damper is the first device monitored in Frigidaire's Water/Service Test.

What does ER UO mean on a Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher?

Read it as the display presenting Frigidaire's letter codes together rather than as one combined code. In Frigidaire's Service Data Sheet table, 'Er' and 'Uo' are separate entries — Er is a switch failure (shorted keypad), Uo is vent stuck open — and Gallery-generation Use & Care manuals (FGHD and FGBD among them) list 'uo' among the malfunction codes the indicator may display. The UO half is the cycle-stopping fault; if an Er persists alone after the vent fault is repaired, that is a second, keypad-side fault to have checked separately.

How to fix a frigidaire dishwasher error code uo?

Start here: Clear any blockage or deposits from the vent so the damper can close fully. With wiring proven, replace the vent assembly if the code returns — it is serviced as an assembly.
