Frigidaire Dishwasher I20 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Frigidaire Dishwasher display showing i20 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Drain error — the dishwasher is draining too slowly or not at all (i20 family; iF0/iE0 siblings cover related drain/filter states by model).

i20 means the drain phase timed out: water is leaving too slowly or not at all. Frigidaire's drain chain is filter → sump → pump → hose → air gap/sink, and the blockage lives in it — the filter and the air gap/sink connection are the statistical leaders, the pump the finisher. Frigidaire's owner's guide is unusually direct about what i20 means, and it groups three displays together: i20, i40, and iF0 all report that clogged filters or a restricted drain line have been detected. Its prescribed checks are specific - clean both filters and the sump area, check for a pinched or blocked drain hose, and, if the drain line is attached to a disposer, check that the knockout plug has been removed. It follows that i20 names a restriction, not a failed part: the pump is only suspected once the path it pushes against is proven clear. The guide's general reset for error codes - pressing Cancel, or switching power off at the breaker for 5 minutes - clears the display and lets the unit restart; it does nothing to the restriction itself, which is why a returning code means walking the drain path in order, from filter to sink.

Applies to: Frigidaire dishwashers.
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Trip the breaker before removing the base access panel, and shut the water valve off before disconnecting the supply line.

What causes the i20 code on a Frigidaire dishwasher?

Clogged filter

The leading cause — a greasy filter throttles everything.

Air gap / sink connection blockage

Food plugs at the outlet path.

Pump jam or failure

Debris or an open motor.

Kinked hose

Post-install classic.

Debris collected in the sump and glass trap

Frigidaire's sump design puts a glass trap in the drain's first chamber, there to catch the shard, bone, or olive stone that would otherwise jam the pump. Between the trap and the fine filter, debris degrades drainage gradually rather than suddenly: the filters mat with grease while the trap slowly fills, the drain phase takes longer week by week, and the dishwasher may sound different at drain time long before i20 finally appears. Frigidaire's guide lists cleaning both filters and the sump as one job.

High loop slipped down, so the machine drains twice

The drain hose must rise into a high loop under the counter before it falls to the sink connection; that loop is what stops drained water flowing back towards the tub. If the loop's securing strap or clip breaks and the hose sags, water the pump has just expelled can siphon or run back into the sump, so the next drain phase starts with water that was already removed once. The machine is effectively draining the same water twice, until the drain phase times out into i20.

Air gap clogged, or a part-left knockout at the disposal

Where local code fits an air gap - the small device on the sink deck - the drain path runs up through it, and its cap and outlet clog with food film until the gap itself becomes the restriction. The disposer version is similar: Frigidaire's guide singles out the knockout plug, and a plug that was knocked out carelessly can leave a fragment or a partly opened inlet that passes some water but not a full drain flow. Both fit i20 that began after sink or disposal work.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Clean the filter; clear the air gap; check hose run; pump listen test on cancel/drain.
  2. Start with a timed cancel/drain before opening anything: with the door latched, run Cancel and listen - a healthy Frigidaire empties its sump decisively and goes quiet, while a restricted one trails off, gurgles, or is still holding water when the drain phase ends. Do not pull the filter out while the tub still holds undrained water; let the cancel attempt finish first so debris in that water is not washed down into the exposed pump.
  3. Take the bottom rack out for room, then lift out the filter assembly and the glass trap and wash both thoroughly; with them out, inspect the sump itself for shards, labels, and food sludge, and spin the lower spray arm by hand to confirm nothing hangs down into the sump area where it can foul the drain path.
  4. Move under the sink and work the path in order: confirm the drain hose still rises into its high loop and is strapped up under the counter, not sagging; if an air gap is fitted, take its cover and cap off and clear them; if the hose connects to a disposer, confirm the knockout plug is fully removed from the inlet and run the disposer to clear it.
  5. Only with the path proven clear, test the pump itself: power off, reach the pump impeller through the sump and check it turns and is free of glass or bone fragments, then - if you meter pumps - check the pump motor for continuity; an open reading means a failed pump rather than a restriction.

Frigidaire dishwasher i20 error code fix

  1. Clean/clear the path; clear pump debris or replace a dead pump (continuity test).
  2. Wash the filter assembly and glass trap, clear the sump, and refit everything fully seated: a filter or trap left slightly unseated lets debris straight through to the pump and turns a restriction fault into a pump fault.
  3. Re-secure the drain hose's high loop up under the counter, replacing a broken strap or clip, and check the hose run for pinches where it passes through the cabinet - Frigidaire's guide names a pinched hose alongside the filters in its i20 checks.
  4. Clear the air gap (cap, outlets, and the hose down to the drain) or fully remove the disposer's knockout plug, retrieving any fragment from inside the disposer with the power off; then run the disposer before reconnecting and retesting.
  5. Free the pump impeller of any debris you find; if the impeller is damaged, or the pump tests open-circuit, replace the drain pump. Confirm the repair with a cancel/drain that empties decisively, then one full empty cycle, before calling i20 fixed.

The part that usually fails: Drain pump

Continuity test; open = replace.

Frigidaire dishwasher error code 20 reset

Cancel/drain after clearing; i20 clears on a normal empty.

Frigidaire's i-series codes clear with a power reset: switch the breaker off for at least 5 minutes, restore power, and run a cycle. Leak code i30 is the exception in practice — it will not stay cleared while water remains in the base pan, because the float switch is still physically lifted.

Why does the i20 code keep coming back?

Quick recurrence = downstream restriction or weakening pump.

Can you still use the dishwasher with i20 showing? No — standing water and poor washes until fixed.

How to stop i20 coming back

When to call a pro. Powered pump + clear path + no drain = control/level diagnosis.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Frigidaire dishwashers

Frigidaire dishwashers include a diagnostic/water test cycle (entered by holding specific pad combinations — on many Gallery models, holding Power Scrub/Start combinations; the service data sheet behind the toe-kick gives the exact pair) that fills, washes, heats and drains in a compressed sequence and shows any i-code that the control logs.

Codes i20 gets confused with

E30 — Platform-rendering variant in the drain family on some Frigidaire/Electrolux platforms (E30-style codes appear in the drain/leak monitoring area by platform); diagnose with the i20/i30 playbooks by symptom. Frigidaire's mainline codes are the i-series (i10/i20/i30), but sibling Electrolux-platform machines and some Frigidaire generations render related faults in E-format.

E20 — Platform-rendering variant of the drain fault on some Frigidaire/Electrolux platforms (E20 = drain system in those charts) — the i20 playbook applies. In E-format platform charts, E20 is the drain fault: the machine isn't emptying in time.

i30 — Leak/flood error — water detected in the base (anti-flood system active); the dishwasher may drain continuously. i30 is Frigidaire's (Electrolux-platform) flood code: the base float/ sensor found water, so the machine stops filling, often runs the drain pump continuously, and refuses cycles.

UO — Vent open error — the dishwasher's vent (drying vent) is reporting open/not operating correctly during the heated dry phase. UO is a Frigidaire-specific code for the vent system: many Frigidaire dishwashers use a vent with a small fan/wax-motor damper that opens for drying.

Frequently asked questions

i20 vs i30?

i20 = drain fault (water won't leave). i30 = flood fault (water in the base). Different systems, similar first moves (look in the sump/base).

Are i20, i40, and iF0 the same fault on a Frigidaire dishwasher?

Frigidaire's owner's guide treats them as one detection: all three are listed together as clogged filters or a restricted drain line having been detected, with the same checks - clean both filters and the sump area, check for a pinched or blocked drain hose, and check the disposer knockout plug if the line is attached to a disposer. Which of the three your model displays is a model difference; the work is identical.

Does turning the power off at the breaker for 5 minutes fix i20?

It clears the code, not the cause. Frigidaire's guide says that for error codes generally, pressing Cancel or turning power off at the breaker for 5 minutes should clear the display and let the unit be restarted - and that if that does not resolve the problem, service is needed. If i20 comes straight back, the restriction the code reported is still in the drain path, and resetting it again will not change that.

Why did i20 appear right after a new garbage disposal was installed?

This is the cause Frigidaire itself prints in the guide: if the drain line is attached to a disposer, check that the knockout plug has been removed. A new disposer ships with its dishwasher inlet sealed by that plug; if the installer connected the hose without knocking it out - or knocked it out only partly - the dishwasher has nowhere to drain. The fix is at the disposer inlet, with its power off, not inside the dishwasher.

How to fix frigidaire dishwasher error code i20?

Start here: Clean/clear the path; clear pump debris or replace a dead pump (continuity test). Wash the filter assembly and glass trap, clear the sump, and refit everything fully seated: a filter or trap left slightly unseated lets debris straight through to the pump and turns a restriction fault into a pump fault.
