Bosch Dishwasher E92 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Bosch Dishwasher display showing E92 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Not one fault but a two-member family in Bosch's current suffixed display format: E:92-10 — spray-arm rotation of the lower spray arm is blocked (or the lower spray arm is not correctly fitted); E:92-40 — filters are soiled or blocked. Bosch publishes no standalone 'E92' definition without its suffix.

Current Bosch manuals print fault codes as E:XX-XX, and the number after the dash is not decoration — each suffixed code gets its own row, its own cause and its own remedy in Bosch's troubleshooting table. E92's two documented rows are both wash-quality faults: -10 is about the lower spray arm being obstructed by dishware or not fitted correctly, and -40 is about the filter system being soiled or blocked. An earlier version of this entry treated E92 as a filter/drain-monitoring variant — Bosch's own tables do not support that; the wastewater-pump code in the same manuals is E:61-02, a different family entirely. E92 is the clearest example of why Bosch's current code format has to be read whole. Owners arriving from older Bosch lists look for one meaning and find two unrelated ones sharing a prefix: a loading fault (-10) and a maintenance fault (-40). Neither row mentions the drain pump, the drain hose or any sensor, and Bosch gives the wastewater pump its own separate code in the same tables (E:61-02). If your machine is also leaving water in the tub, that is a second fault to read separately, not a reason to fold everything into 'E92'. Read the suffix, fix that row, and let the code's narrowness work for you.

Applies to: Bosch dishwashers with the current suffixed fault-code format (e.g. the SHP78CM-generation Use and Care manuals and current Bosch quick reference guides). Older Bosch models with two-digit codes do not display E92.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Switch the dishwasher off and trip its breaker before tilting it, removing the base tray or touching the circulation pump. Bosch's leak system works with a float in the base — if it has triggered, the base contains water.

What causes the E92 code on a Bosch dishwasher?

Dishware obstructing the lower spray arm (E:92-10)

Bosch's first -10 cause: arrange dishware so that it does not obstruct spray-arm rotation of the lower spray arm — a tall item hanging below the lower basket is the usual offender.

Lower spray arm not correctly fitted (E:92-10)

Bosch's second -10 cause: the lower spray arm is not correctly fitted — refit it so it clicks into position.

Filters soiled or blocked (E:92-40)

Bosch's -40 row, in full: 'Filters are soiled or blocked — clean the filters.' Grease and food residue in the filter system are the whole story Bosch gives for this suffix.

The load itself: close-packed dishes and a tall item below the basket (-10)

Bosch's -10 row blames arrangement before hardware: dishware placed so that it obstructs the lower spray arm's rotation. The classic geometry is a tall pan, tray or utensil that hangs below the lower basket into the arm's sweep, or a basket packed so tightly that items settle into the arm's path mid-cycle as water moves them. The arm may spin freely when you test it empty and still strike the same item ten minutes into a full load — which is why -10 so often appears 'randomly' on big washes and never on small ones. Bosch's companion row for food remnants makes the same point from the other side: arrange tableware with sufficient space between items, avoid points of contact, and let the spray jets actually reach the surfaces.

A lower spray arm refitted wrong after cleaning (-10's second clause)

Bosch pairs the blockage cause with a fitting cause: 'Lower spray arm is not correctly fitted — fit the lower spray arm correctly.' The lower arm is a part owners remove — Bosch's own spray-arm cleaning procedure has you pull it up and off to rinse its nozzles — and an arm pushed back without its click sits high, wobbles, or stalls against the filter area, and the control reports the same -10 it would report for a pan in the way. Any -10 that began immediately after a spray-arm or filter clean should be read as a fitting fault until the click is proven.

Filters that are soiled in the way a rinse hides (-40)

Bosch's word is 'soiled', not 'blocked with debris', and the distinction matters: the -40 filter system is usually coated rather than plugged — a grey grease film across the micro filter that a quick rinse smears around without removing. Bosch's cleaning procedure exists because of exactly this: the elements are separated and cleaned individually under running water, then reassembled. A filter system rinsed as one lump, or refitted without its arrow markings matched, can return to the machine still effectively soiled or not engaged — and some current manuals print that second state in the -40 row itself: filters inserted incorrectly and/or not engaged.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Read the full code including the suffix before doing anything — E:92-10 and E:92-40 have different fixes, and 'E92' alone is not a Bosch diagnosis.
  2. For -10: open the machine, spin the lower spray arm by hand, and look for the item or rack position stopping it; check the arm is clicked down correctly.
  3. For -40: remove the filter system (turn the coarse filter anticlockwise), separate it, and judge it honestly — a grey grease film counts as soiled.
  4. Watch one full display cycle before touching anything: Bosch's manuals describe these codes as lighting up alternately, and owners regularly write down a partial code. The diagnosis you need is the full E:92-10 or E:92-40, suffix included.
  5. Do the empty-machine spin test, then the loaded test: with the machine empty, spin the lower spray arm by hand — it should rotate freely and sit clicked down. Then load as you normally would and spin again by hand before closing the door; the item that stops it is your -10 cause, found in ten seconds instead of after a failed cycle.
  6. Judge the filters out of the machine, not in it: remove the filter system, separate it, and hold the micro filter up to the light. Even light transmission with a visible film is a soiled filter by Bosch's standard — 'clean the filters' means the full procedure, not a rinse of the assembled unit.
  7. Separate the neighbours before escalating: standing water and a drain that never runs belong to E:61-02 territory (wastewater pump blocked, cover loose), and a machine that will not fill belongs to the water-supply codes. E92 with a tub that fills, sprays weakly or unevenly, and drains normally is behaving exactly as its two rows describe.

How to fix bosch dishwasher error code e92 10?

  1. E:92-10: rearrange the load so nothing obstructs the lower spray arm's rotation, and refit the lower spray arm correctly (it clicks into position).
  2. E:92-40: clean the filters exactly as Bosch prescribes — clean the filter elements under running water, reassemble the filter system, insert it and turn the coarse filter clockwise so the arrow markings match up.
  3. For E:92-40, run Bosch's filter procedure in full: check the filters after the wash, turn the coarse filter anticlockwise and remove the filter system, pull down the micro filter, press the locking catches together and lift the coarse filter out, clean every element under running water, reassemble, reinsert, and turn the coarse filter clockwise until the arrow markings match up. That last alignment is part of the fix, not tidiness — an unengaged filter system is a documented -40 state.
  4. For E:92-10, fix the geometry, not just the code: reload with space between items and nothing projecting below the lower basket, then refit the lower spray arm the way Bosch's cleaning procedure ends — insert it and confirm it clicks into position, and screw the upper spray arm firmly back if it was removed. Spin both by hand before the test cycle.
  5. Prove the fix on the load type that produced the code: a -10 that only strikes on full, tall-item loads is not proven by an empty test run, and a -40 is not proven until a normal greasy load finishes with the code absent. If either suffix returns anyway, stop repeating the remedy and book Bosch service, quoting the full suffixed code.

The part that usually fails: None — Bosch names no part for either suffix

Both documented remedies are owner actions: reload/refit for -10, clean for -40.

How to reset / clear the E92 code

Fix first, then reset: on current models, cancelling the programme (press Reset / the main switch for approx. 4 seconds; the programme is cancelled and ends after approx. 1 minute) and starting a fresh cycle clears the display once the arm turns freely or the filters are clean.

On Bosch dishwashers, most error codes clear when the cycle is cancelled: hold the Start button for about 3 seconds until the display shows 0:01, let the machine pump out for a minute, then switch off. For many codes a control reset is the next step — switch the machine off, and on models with a physical power switch also cut power at the breaker for a few minutes. A code that returns straight after a reset is an active fault; Bosch controls re-detect it at the next self-check, typically within the first minutes of a new cycle.

Why does the E92 code keep coming back?

A -40 that returns within days means the filters were rinsed but not de-greased, or were refitted unengaged (arrows misaligned); a -10 that returns is the same loading pattern repeating, or an arm that will not stay clicked in. Either suffix surviving its documented remedy, correctly done, is a Bosch service call with the full suffixed code quoted. A returning E92 is a pattern, and the suffix tells you which pattern. -40 back within days is a filter system that was rinsed rather than cleaned, refitted unengaged, or genuinely loading with grease faster than the household's cleaning interval — shorten the interval before suspecting the machine. -10 back only on large loads is the same obstruction geometry repeating; -10 back on every load, including an empty test with the arm clicked in and spinning freely by hand, is the point where the documented owner remedies are exhausted and the fault stops being a loading conversation — that machine goes to Bosch service with the full code quoted.

Can you still use the dishwasher with E92 showing? Not pointless to run — but wash quality is exactly what both suffixes are reporting, so fix before the next full load rather than re-running.

How to stop E92 coming back

When to call a pro. For the persistent case above — quote the full code (E:92-10 or E:92-40), because Bosch's table splits on it.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Bosch dishwashers

Bosch dishwashers store the last errors in a fault memory that can be read in the customer-service/test program (entered with a two-button hold that varies by series — e.g. holding two program buttons while switching on). The test program also steps through fill, heat, wash and drain so a technician can see which stage re-triggers the code. The exact button pair for your series is in the service documentation; the fault memory survives a normal reset, which is why a Bosch technician can still see a code you cleared from the display.

Codes E92 gets confused with

E15 — Water in the base / leak protection active — the AquaStop safety system has detected water in the base tray and shut the water supply off. E15 is Bosch's leak-protection code: a float/ sensor in the base detected water, so the machine stopped and (on AquaStop models) the inlet safety valve closed.

E22 — Filter clogged — the filter system is blocked and needs cleaning (a maintenance code, not a breakdown). E22 is Bosch telling you the filters are too clogged to run properly: the control detects the circulation/drain behaving as if the filter is matted (because it is).

E25 — Drain pump error — the drain pump is blocked, jammed, or its cover is not fitted (Bosch). E25 is E24's closer relative: where E24 indicts drainage generally, E25 points at the pump itself — the impeller is jammed by debris, the pump cover is missing/loose (Bosch's manual calls this out explicitly for E25), or the pump motor has failed.

E01 — Heating/circulation fault family header on Bosch dishwashers (E01–E05 range covers the heat pump and circulation drive area on many models). Bosch's E0x block groups the heat/circulation system: on many models E01 specifically involves the circulation/heat-pump drive or its electronics (with E02/E03/E05 splitting relay/sensor branches by model).

Frequently asked questions

What does E92 mean on a Bosch dishwasher without a suffix?

Bosch does not publish a suffix-less E92: in its current manuals the code only exists as E:92-10 (lower spray arm blocked or not correctly fitted) and E:92-40 (filters soiled or blocked). Read the whole display — the suffix is the diagnosis.

Is Bosch E92 a drain fault?

No — that was an error in this entry's earlier version. Bosch's drain-pump fault in the same manuals is E:61-02 (wastewater pump blocked / cover loose); E92's documented rows are spray-arm rotation (-10) and filters (-40).

How do I fix Bosch dishwasher error code E92-10?

Follow Bosch's own two causes for the -10 row. First, rearrange the dishware so nothing obstructs spray-arm rotation of the lower spray arm — check especially for items hanging below the lower basket — spinning the loaded arm by hand before you close the door. Second, if the load is clear, refit the lower spray arm correctly: Bosch's wording is that it must be fitted so it clicks into position, and an arm refitted after spray-arm cleaning without that click produces the same code. No part and no drain work is involved in Bosch's -10 remedy.

What does Bosch dishwasher error code E92-40 mean?

It is Bosch's filter row in the current suffixed format: 'Filters are soiled or blocked — clean the filters.' Nothing more exotic is documented for -40 — not the drain pump (that is E:61-02 in the same manuals) and not a sensor. Do the full filter procedure: separate the coarse and micro filters, clean each element under running water, reassemble, and refit with the arrow markings matched so the system is engaged.

Why does my Bosch dishwasher show E92 with different numbers after the dash?

Because on current Bosch controls the dash number is part of the code, not a counter or a cycle count. Bosch publishes E:92-10 and E:92-40 as separate fault-table rows with separate causes — lower spray-arm rotation blocked or arm not correctly fitted for -10, filters soiled or blocked for -40. Searches written as 'e92 40' or 'e92-10' are owners transcribing those two rows; there is no Bosch definition for a bare E92 without one of them.

How to fix bosch dishwasher error code e92 10?

Start here: E:92-10: rearrange the load so nothing obstructs the lower spray arm's rotation, and refit the lower spray arm correctly (it clicks into position). E:92-40: clean the filters exactly as Bosch prescribes — clean the filter elements under running water, reassemble the filter system, insert it and turn the coarse filter clockwise so the arrow markings match up.
