Bosch Dishwasher E24 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Bosch Dishwasher display showing E24 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Drain error — the dishwasher is not draining properly (Bosch's most common code).

E24 means the control ran the drain pump and the water didn't leave as expected — or the pump's cover/filters are restricting flow so badly the machine reads it as a drain failure. Bosch's signature detail: the drain pump has a small removable cover in the sump, and if that cover is loose or missing, E24 appears even with a healthy pump — always check the cover is clicked in. Filters, the pump impeller, hose/air-gap and the sink connection complete the chain.

Applies to: Bosch dishwashers (also Neff/Siemens siblings on the same platform).
Safety first. Before you start: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before opening any panel, and close the water taps before disconnecting hoses. Switch the dishwasher off and trip its breaker before tilting it, removing the base tray or touching the circulation pump. Bosch's leak system works with a float in the base — if it has triggered, the base contains water.

What causes the E24 code on a Bosch dishwasher?

Clogged filter system

Bosch's multi-part filter mats with grease until drainage slows past the limit.

Drain pump cover loose/missing

The sump's pump cover must be fully clicked in; a loose one lets the pump lose prime and E24 sets.

Blocked pump impeller

Glass chips and seeds jam the impeller — reachable once the cover is off.

Drain hose/air-gap/disposal blockage

Including the new-disposal knock-out plug classic.

Siphon connection not sealed

Bosch's own E24 checklist includes a step owners skip because it sounds like plumbing rather than dishwasher: check the siphon (sink trap) connection and ensure it is sealed. The drain hose's joint into the trap is part of the drain path the machine depends on; a loose, poorly seated, or perished seal at that joint can let the pumped water escape or draw air instead of travelling cleanly away, and the machine reads the result as a drain failure.

Filter unit refitted unlocked after cleaning

Bosch's filter instructions end with a specific refit action: twist the filter unit to lock it into position until both arrows line up. A unit dropped back in without that locking twist can sit slightly raised or shift in use, restricting flow at the sump and letting debris past towards the pump. E24 that starts immediately after a filter clean, on a machine that was draining fine before, is this cause more often than a sudden pump failure.

Drain hose fouled along its length, not just kinked

Bosch's drain guidance has you feel along the whole hose for blockages, not only look for kinks: years of greasy wash water narrow a corrugated hose from the inside, especially at low spots where dirty water sits between cycles. The hose can look perfect from outside while its bore is half closed, which is why Bosch advises replacing a particularly dirty hose rather than refitting it after a rinse.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Remove and wash the filter assembly (twist-out cylinder + mesh) in hot soapy water.
  2. Take off the pump cover in the sump (per the manual — usually a squeeze-and-lift tab) and: (1) clear debris from the impeller, spin it by finger to confirm it moves; (2) refit the cover until it clicks.
  3. Check the air gap (if fitted) and the hose connection at the sink/disposal.
  4. Check the siphon connection the way Bosch lists it for E24: confirm the drain hose's joint into the sink trap is properly made and sealed, with no looseness, gaps, or signs of water having escaped around it.
  5. Verify the filter refit before anything else if E24 followed a clean: unlock the filter unit, reseat it fully, and twist until both arrows line up, then press the pump cover area to confirm nothing was left sitting proud.
  6. Run Bosch's bucket test on the hose: disconnect the machine from power, straighten the hose out into a bucket (carefully - the water in it can be very hot), run the drain programme so water runs through the hose into the bucket, and feel along the hose for blockages while watching for leaks.
  7. Do the pump inspection exactly as Bosch's manual describes, wearing protective gloves because debris can be sharp: sponge out the standing water, prise the pump cover off with a teaspoon, grip it by the lug and pull up until it resists, then pull forward, and clear any foreign objects from the pump compartment.

How to fix bosch dishwasher error code e24?

  1. Clean filters; clear the pump; reseat the pump cover firmly — this trio cures most E24s.
  2. Clear the hose/air-gap path; remove a disposal knock-out plug if a new disposal coincides.
  3. Replace the drain pump if the impeller is damaged or the motor tests open (continuity check).
  4. Clean the filter unit under running tap water with a small brush, working the inside of the cylindrical filter as Bosch directs and using nothing abrasive, then reassemble it, refit it, and lock it with the arrows aligned before testing.
  5. Straighten and flush the drain hose; if it is particularly dirty inside, replace it instead of refitting it, as Bosch advises - a narrowed hose will bring E24 back within weeks.
  6. Refit the pump cover by pressing it down until it clicks fully into place - Bosch's manual warns the drain pump will not work properly if the cover is not snapped in completely - then reset the dishwasher following your owner's manual and run a test cycle, watching the drain at the trap connection.

The part that usually fails: Drain pump (after filters + pump cover)

Bosch order matters: the pump cover click is a 10-second check that has saved many owners a pump purchase.

Bosch dishwasher error code e24 reset

Reset the cycle (hold Start ~3 seconds or per the manual's reset) after clearing; E24 clears when a drain completes normally.

On Bosch dishwashers, most error codes clear when the cycle is cancelled: hold the Start button for about 3 seconds until the display shows 0:01, let the machine pump out for a minute, then switch off. For many codes a control reset is the next step — switch the machine off, and on models with a physical power switch also cut power at the breaker for a few minutes. A code that returns straight after a reset is an active fault; Bosch controls re-detect it at the next self-check, typically within the first minutes of a new cycle.

Bosch dishwasher keeps getting e24 error code

E24 returning with clean filters and a clicked cover points downstream (house line) or at a pump weakening under load.

Can you still use the dishwasher with E24 showing? No — running against E24 leaves standing water and can stress the pump.

How to stop E24 coming back

When to call a pro. Pump powered + path clear + still no drain = control/level diagnosis by a technician.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Bosch dishwashers

Bosch dishwashers store the last errors in a fault memory that can be read in the customer-service/test program (entered with a two-button hold that varies by series — e.g. holding two program buttons while switching on). The test program also steps through fill, heat, wash and drain so a technician can see which stage re-triggers the code. The exact button pair for your series is in the service documentation; the fault memory survives a normal reset, which is why a Bosch technician can still see a code you cleared from the display.

Codes E24 gets confused with

E15 — Water in the base / leak protection active — the AquaStop safety system has detected water in the base tray and shut the water supply off. E15 is Bosch's leak-protection code: a float/ sensor in the base detected water, so the machine stopped and (on AquaStop models) the inlet safety valve closed.

E25 — Drain pump error — the drain pump is blocked, jammed, or its cover is not fitted (Bosch). E25 is E24's closer relative: where E24 indicts drainage generally, E25 points at the pump itself — the impeller is jammed by debris, the pump cover is missing/loose (Bosch's manual calls this out explicitly for E25), or the pump motor has failed.

E09 — Heating circuit error — the dishwasher's heater is not working (heat pump/heater fault). E09 is Bosch's heating fault: the control drove the heater (on modern Bosch machines the heater is integrated in the circulation 'heat pump') and the temperature didn't rise as expected.

E22 — Filter clogged — the filter system is blocked and needs cleaning (a maintenance code, not a breakdown). E22 is Bosch telling you the filters are too clogged to run properly: the control detects the circulation/drain behaving as if the filter is matted (because it is).

Frequently asked questions

Why does everyone say 'check the pump cover' for E24?

Because on Bosch machines the sump pump cover is a real E24 cause by itself: loose or missing, the pump can't move water properly even though it's healthy.

E24 vs E25 on Bosch — difference?

E24 = drainage restricted/not draining (path problem). E25 = the pump itself is blocked/covered or electrically faultier — closely related; the checks overlap heavily.

Why did E24 appear right after I cleaned the filter?

Because two refit details decide whether the machine drains afterwards: the filter unit must be twisted locked until both arrows line up, and the pump cover underneath must be snapped fully back in until it clicks - Bosch's manual states plainly that the drain pump will not work properly if its cover is not snapped in completely. An E24 that follows a clean is almost always one of those two, not a pump that chose that day to die.

How do I remove the Bosch pump cover without breaking it?

Use Bosch's own method: disconnect the power, remove the filters, sponge out the water, then prise the cover off with a teaspoon until it clicks, grip it by its lug, pull upward until you feel resistance, and then pull it forward. Wear protective gloves - Bosch warns some debris in there may be sharp. On refitting, press the cover down until it clicks and is fully engaged.

What does Bosch itself say to check first for E24?

Bosch's E24 page lists, in order: the inlet hose not kinked or damaged, the siphon connection sealed, the pump cover not loose (it sits under the filter), and - if the drain hose connects to a garbage disposal - the plug removed from the disposal's dishwasher connection, finishing with resetting the dishwasher according to the owner's manual once the cause is fixed.

How to fix bosch dishwasher error code e24?

Start here: Clean filters; clear the pump; reseat the pump cover firmly — this trio cures most E24s. Clear the hose/air-gap path; remove a disposal knock-out plug if a new disposal coincides.

What does error code e24 mean on bosch dishwasher?

Drain error — the dishwasher is not draining properly (Bosch's most common code). E24 means the control ran the drain pump and the water didn't leave as expected — or the pump's cover/filters are restricting flow so badly the machine reads it as a drain failure.
