Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error Code: Meaning, Causes & Fix

Bosch Dishwasher display showing E15 — FixCode Guide error code graphic

Water in the base / leak protection active — the AquaStop safety system has detected water in the base tray and shut the water supply off.

E15 is Bosch's leak-protection code: a float/ sensor in the base detected water, so the machine stopped and (on AquaStop models) the inlet safety valve closed. The dishwasher often won't start at all, or the drain pump runs continuously to protect. The water got there from a leak (hose, sump seal, a cracked part), an overfill/suds event pushing water over the tub lip, or a one-off spill during installation. The base must be dried AND the source found — drying alone is the reset, not the repair. Bosch's own wording for this code is worth knowing before anything is touched: on its error-code pages Bosch says the safety switch has detected water in the base of the dishwasher and the leakage protection system has been activated, and for E15 (shown as F15 on some displays) it instructs you to close the water tap and switch off the appliance, recommending against resolving it yourself at home for health and safety reasons and advising an engineer visit instead. That official caution shapes the order of work below: make the machine safe first, treat any home checks as information-gathering for the engineer or as confirmation of an obvious external cause, and never defeat the protection system just to get a cycle to run - the base float and AquaStop valve are doing exactly the job they were fitted for.

Applies to: Bosch dishwashers with base leak detection/AquaStop.
Safety first. Safety first: disconnect power before any internal check, and never defeat a safety switch or sensor to 'test' an appliance. Switch the dishwasher off and trip its breaker before tilting it, removing the base tray or touching the circulation pump. Bosch's leak system works with a float in the base — if it has triggered, the base contains water.

What causes the E15 code on a Bosch dishwasher?

A genuine leak into the base

Sump seal, hoses, a cracked wash arm jetting at the door, circulation pump seal.

Oversudsing spill-over

Wrong detergent or rinse-aid overdose foams water over the tub lip into the base.

A one-time external spill

Plumbing nearby leaked or the machine was tilted in moving — the base caught water that isn't the dishwasher's fault.

Leak at the inlet or AquaStop hose end

Not every E15 leak starts inside the tub. The inlet hose and its safety (AquaStop) assembly connect at the tap and at the machine, and a weeping joint or perished washer at either end lets water track along the hose and collect under or inside the base until the float lifts. This cause fits E15 that appears before the wash has really got going, or that follows any plumbing work, a new hose, or the machine being pulled out and pushed back.

Drain restriction backing water up inside the machine

Bosch's not-draining guidance starts with the filter and pump because foreign objects - glass slivers, food, and dirt - clog them and stop the dishwasher emptying. A tub that cannot empty on time holds wash water longer and higher than it should, stressing the sump area and seals cycle after cycle until water finds its way into the base. E15 that was preceded by weeks of poor draining, gurgling, or water left in the tub often has this history behind it.

Float sitting in a dirty base and sticking up

The base tray collects more than water over the years: grease film, detergent residue, and grit wash down there too. After a minor one-off spill has dried, a float coated in that film can stay stuck in its raised, tripped position instead of dropping back, so the machine reports E15 with a base that looks and feels dry. This is the version where the protection system itself, not a leak, needs the attention.

Checks to run before you replace anything

  1. Turn the water supply OFF first. Pull the machine out (power off) and tilt it gently back — water running out confirms the base is holding water.
  2. Dry the base fully (towels, time, gentle airflow).
  3. Then run a short cycle pulled out if safe, watching with a flashlight for the drip source.
  4. Do Bosch's two official first moves before any inspection: close the water tap feeding the dishwasher and switch the appliance off. Note whether the drain pump keeps running afterwards - continuous pumping with the machine off is the flood-protection behaviour, not a second fault.
  5. Trace the inlet side with a dry tissue at both ends of the supply/AquaStop hose and around the inlet valve area: work from the highest point downwards, because water tracks along the hose and the highest damp point is the one nearest the real leak.
  6. Service the filter system the Bosch way as part of the hunt: unlock the filter unit at the base of the tub, unscrew the cylindrical filter, clean both parts under running water with a small brush (nothing abrasive), then reassemble and twist it back until both arrows line up - a restricted filter system is a drain problem that can feed a base leak.
  7. Once the base is dry, confirm the float drops back down freely and that its recess is clean; a float that stays up, or drops only when poked, explains an E15 that survives thorough drying.

Bosch dishwasher error code e15 how to fix it

  1. Repair the leak found (seals, hoses, wash arm, pump seal as applicable).
  2. For suds events: clear all wrong detergent, correct rinse-aid dose, empty hot cycle once the base is dry.
  3. Confirm a full cycle with a dry base before pushing the machine back in.
  4. Renew the inlet hose washer or replace a weeping inlet/AquaStop hose assembly, then watch the first fill of a test cycle with the connections exposed so any remaining drip is seen, not guessed.
  5. Clear the drain path end to end - filters, pump area, and hose - so the tub empties promptly again, removing the standing-water stress that pushed water into the base in the first place.
  6. If no external cause shows itself, or E15 returns after the base has been properly dried, follow Bosch's own recommendation: leave the water tap closed and book a Bosch engineer rather than repeatedly tilting the machine and re-running it - an internal leak does not heal between cycles.

The part that usually fails: The leak source (seal/hose/arm/pump)

The float switch is the messenger. Replacing it stops nothing.

Bosch dishwasher e15 error code reset

E15 clears only when the base is dry — there is no button override, by design. After drying and repair, restore water/power and run a cycle.

On Bosch dishwashers, most error codes clear when the cycle is cancelled: hold the Start button for about 3 seconds until the display shows 0:01, let the machine pump out for a minute, then switch off. For many codes a control reset is the next step — switch the machine off, and on models with a physical power switch also cut power at the breaker for a few minutes. A code that returns straight after a reset is an active fault; Bosch controls re-detect it at the next self-check, typically within the first minutes of a new cycle.

Why does the E15 code keep coming back?

E15 returning every few cycles = a slow drip you haven't caught: run pulled-out and watch a whole cycle. Immediate E15 with a verifiably dry base = a stuck float/contaminated sensor — clean and free it.

Can you still use the dishwasher with E15 showing? No — and keep the supply off until the source is found. E15 is the machine preventing a floor-damage event.

How to stop E15 coming back

When to call a pro. If the leak source is inside the sump/circulation assembly and doesn't reveal itself on a watched cycle, a technician's leak hunt is the efficient spend.

Retrieving stored fault codes on Bosch dishwashers

Bosch dishwashers store the last errors in a fault memory that can be read in the customer-service/test program (entered with a two-button hold that varies by series — e.g. holding two program buttons while switching on). The test program also steps through fill, heat, wash and drain so a technician can see which stage re-triggers the code. The exact button pair for your series is in the service documentation; the fault memory survives a normal reset, which is why a Bosch technician can still see a code you cleared from the display.

Codes E15 gets confused with

E24 — Drain error — the dishwasher is not draining properly (Bosch's most common code). E24 means the control ran the drain pump and the water didn't leave as expected — or the pump's cover/filters are restricting flow so badly the machine reads it as a drain failure.

E92 — Filter system error variant on newer Bosch platforms (E9x block) — a filter/drain-monitoring fault rendering; treat with the E22/E24 playbook (filters first). Newer Bosch controls extended the code set into E9x numbers for finer monitoring splits; E92 is met in the filter/drain monitoring area on those platforms.

E22 — Filter clogged — the filter system is blocked and needs cleaning (a maintenance code, not a breakdown). E22 is Bosch telling you the filters are too clogged to run properly: the control detects the circulation/drain behaving as if the filter is matted (because it is).

E25 — Drain pump error — the drain pump is blocked, jammed, or its cover is not fitted (Bosch). E25 is E24's closer relative: where E24 indicts drainage generally, E25 points at the pump itself — the impeller is jammed by debris, the pump cover is missing/loose (Bosch's manual calls this out explicitly for E25), or the pump motor has failed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just tilt the water out and carry on?

Tilting/drying clears the code, but if a leak caused it, the base refills — and one day it isn't the base that catches it. Find the drip.

Why does the drain pump keep running when E15 is showing?

That is the leakage protection working as designed. With water detected in the base, the machine runs the drain pump to keep the tub empty and prevent more water reaching the base, and on AquaStop models the inlet safety valve stays closed. Bosch's instruction for this state is to close the water tap and switch the appliance off - the pump noise stopping is not the goal; stopping the water is.

Is F15 the same fault as E15 on a Bosch dishwasher?

Yes - Bosch groups them together: its error-code pages say that if the E15 or F15 code appears, the water protection system is activated. Which of the two your display shows is a model and display-type difference, not a different fault, and the first response is identical: close the water tap, switch off, and arrange an engineer if no simple external cause is found.

Bosch says not to fix E15 myself - what should I actually do?

Follow their sequence: close the water tap, switch the appliance off, and book an engineer visit, which is the route Bosch recommends for health and safety reasons. If you inspect anything yourself first, keep it to looking - checking hose connections for an obvious drip, for example - and tell the engineer what you found and when the code appears in the cycle; that timing information genuinely shortens the diagnosis.

How to fix bosch dishwasher error code e15?

Start here: Repair the leak found (seals, hoses, wash arm, pump seal as applicable). For suds events: clear all wrong detergent, correct rinse-aid dose, empty hot cycle once the base is dry.

What does error code e15 on a bosch dishwasher mean?

Water in the base / leak protection active — the AquaStop safety system has detected water in the base tray and shut the water supply off. E15 is Bosch's leak-protection code: a float/ sensor in the base detected water, so the machine stopped and (on AquaStop models) the inlet safety valve closed.
